    I've Got Flax

My favourite use for flax seeds is to mix a few tablespoons with dried cranberries and plain yoghurt. It makes for a delicious blend that is both nutty and fruity. Cheers!
  2. Then why don't you give the same cab company a call and ask them to pick up your pho for you! Cheers!
  3. I think it actually is from the southwestern United States - you see them all over Arizona and New Mexico. Ironic that they picked it for the children, as it is a fertility deity! In some of the native american tribes (I think the Hopi) young girls are afraid of him, because he distributes unborn children! Go figure! Cheers!
  4. Who delivers booze Keith? Cheers!
  5. Ohana Hawaiian BBQ - This new restaurant opened up on Kingsway in the end of June. It offers up typical Hawaiian plate lunch. I had the BBQ plate, which they call a mix of BBQ Rib, teriyaki beef, and BBQ Chicken. The BBQ Rib was a single strip of kalbi (same as you would find at most Korean restaurants) that had slightly sweeter marinade. It was a bit overcooked and slightly tougher than at most Korean places. The teriyaki beef was a paper thin slice of beef (similar to the style used for bulgogi), and incredibly overcooked to the consistency of beef jerky almost. The BBQ chicken was the best of the lot, a thin slice of chicken breast with an almost korean flavoured marinade. But the chicken was tender and tasty. The dish was served with 2 scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. As part of their opening special you get a free soda with your meal. Overall I think I'll pass on returning. Vancouver 1st Hu Nan - Thanks to nondual for this recommendation. Had the sliced pork with cabbage, chili, and garlic. This dish has a bunch of other vegetables and some thinly sliced tofu mixed in as well. It had the perfect blend of spices (including some surprises of chunks of ginger mixed in), which turned up the heat to the right level and highlighted the flavour of the pork and cabbage perfectly. Also had the smoked pork with white chili. Nondual was right - really nice and spicy! HOT! The white chili highlighted the smokey flavours of the pork quite well. Will definitely return again. Be Ga Ne - Had the full on 11 course meal "royal Korean cuisine". It included a jellyfish appetizer, squash soup, BBQ sablefish, BBQ kalbi, BBQ eel, those Korean crepes (I forget the name) that they roll at the table with about 6 fillings, several little Korean pancakes (again, sorry, I forget the name), 2 soups (served a palette cleansers between various courses), as well as 12 of those little side dishes which had some that are hard to find at other restaurants, and a homemade vanilla ice cream to wrap things up. The BBQ sablefish was the highlight - perfectly tender and smokey from the BBQ without being overpowered by the smoke. Will definitely return. Cheers!
  6. I know you said North Rd. is too far. But you know there is a skytrain station there? (Not too far from BeGaNe). Cheers!
  7. Glad it worked out. The broadway location of Memphis is good. You might want to check their health report for the commercial drive location though: Vancouver health reports Cheers!
  8. Interestingly in that same basement there is a rather good robataya called Aki. I guess being close to all the Japanese corporate offices and ESL schools helps the restaurants under that block a bit. Cheers!
  9. Been once, and I agree with previous posters. It was ok. Nothing fabulous, and nothing close to the quality of churrascarias even in other cities in North America. Overall it has a rather touristy feel to it as well. The meat was not very tender, the selection was fairly limited compared to other churrascarias, and it was oversalted. Cheers!
  10. Thanks for this recommendation. Just grabbed lunch there today. The "official" name of the restaurant is "Vancouver 1st Hu Nan Chinese Restaurant" at 8166 Main St. I had the sliced pork and cabbage with chili and garlic, which was served with thinly sliced tofu in the mix. The dish was excellent, with just the right amount of heat which was counterbalanced nicely by the radish and pork soup that was served on the side. I will certainly return. Thank you! Cheers!
  11. To further the point made above, Kaplan's Star Deli frequently has Smoked Winnipeg Goldeye available, and they probably would be willing to ship. You can find them at: Kaplan's webpage. Cheers!
  12. So Neil, I take it the chocolate syrup doesn't give that awful syrup flavour that it sometimes does at other places? Cheers!
  13. Ok, ok, I'll try the chocolate without whip. I had read someplace that they just add chocolate syrup to the vanilla shake to make the chocolate, so I thought I'd try the pure thing. Cheers!
  14. Has anyone tried the new Belgian waffle place on Robson (maybe 1 or 2 blocks up from Denman) on the same side of the street as Guu with Garlic? Cheers!
  15. Pocions Cafe down on South East Marine for the stuffed cabbage. The 2 rolls were stuffed with a blend of beef, rice, and various spices and bathed in a rather simple tomato sauce. It was served piping hot by the extremely friendly staff. With a little pepper added these were a good rendition of the eastern european favourite. They also had perogie on the menu, but I did not get to sample. Tiem bahn dong khanh bakery on Kingsway for a Bahn mi (more details at: Bahn Mi thread) and a durian coconut bun. Fatburger for a vanilla milkshake per Neil's suggestion. Best of your life? Really? It was good for a fast food shake - definitely. Best in class? Maybe not. The whipped cream they put on top was the standard from a can variety. For best in class, it would have to be the real stuff, no? The shake itself was creamy and quite thick. Sam Po for 1/4 of a Ling sized portion of BBQ Pork. The seasoning had a slightly larger anise kick than I have had elsewhere - and I liked that. Wonderful price too - the half pound only cost $2.10! Ocean 6 Seventeen for the Flat Iron steak. The chimichura sauce was the highlight with a distinct citrus kick. Cheers!
  16. I was just here a few days ago, eating chicken skewers, mackeral, and jap chee (chap chee?) at 2 a.m. Washed it all down with a few cups of these flavoured sake drinks (one was aloe, one was yogurt). Great late-night snack! ← Only 2am? Oh yeah, it was a weeknight. Cheers!
  17. Just to update on durian buns - yes, they do have durian coconut buns. $1.20 each. Quite a fluffy bun with a filling of coconut flakes and durian. Cheers!
  18. Same parking lot! When you are facing the Kingsway deli from Kingsway it is 2 or 3 doors to the left. It is a bakery - hence very fresh bread. Cheers! ← Is this the same bakery that has the Durian Buns? If it is - try 'em. You will either wretch or be in heaven. I plan to bring them to the next egullet event - they will be a rite of passage. ← I think it may be. They certainly had a large variety of various Chinese and South East Asian baked goods. Didn't see Durian specifically, but it wouldn't surprise me. They do have lots of pandan flavoured items too. Cheers!

  20. I would second that impression. The times I've been there it has almost always been really quiet and empty, but the food was extremely fresh. Not sure how they do it? Cheers!
  21. Apparently DV8's temporary closure was due to fire caused by an overheated motor in an ice machine.
  22. At least it probably is made with a lot of love from the heart. Or something like that?!?!?! Cheers!
  23. Thanks. Got to try Mata Hari. It was an upscale place, but the food was quite good. Thanks for the tip! Cheers!
  24. You can get an idea of what I imagine this location will probably offer: Ohana BBQ Don't know if this is going to be the same Ohana BBQ, or if they are just ripping off the name? I've personally never tried it myself, but am always up for something new. Cheers!
  25. I'll put in my vote for Sam Po BBQ for their BBQ Pork by the pound. Cheers!
