Every now and then I just can't help craving BBQ Pork. Found a new place with a very reasonable priced answer to the cravings: New Sam Po Meat & BBQ at 1382 Kingsway near the corner of Knight. The pork has the pleasant sweet aroma expected, with an added kick of anise above and beyond the normal 5 spice. The price is hard to beat too. $4.20 a pound! What other places do you recommend for that Chinese BBQ craving? Cheers!

Ohana Hawaiian BBQ is opening in late June: Hawaiian BBQ Thread Cheers!
-
Ok, I passed by yesterday and noticed it was still closed. But there was a handwritten sign on the door talking about opening soon. I was driving and it was written small, but I think it said opening June 23rd. But I could be off by a day or two. Cheers!

Ok, I've turned up a new favourite for me. (Yes, at the same level as Au Petit Cafe, but seems to have longer availability throughout the day!). Tiem bahn dong khanh is a vietnamese bakery located on Kingsway. It is in the same parking lot as the Kingsway Deli on the south side of the street. I had the pork version which featured a sweet roast/BBQ pork (similar to the typical chinese version of BBQ pork) but sliced in the shape of long bacon strips. The bread was extremely fresh (my guess is right out of their own ovens in the back), the pork was slightly sweet and quite tender, the carrot and daikon mixture was thin sliced and crunchy with a slight vinegar flavour, the cilantro was aromatic, the pate very smooth and generously applied, the fish sauce and black pepper delicately enhanced the overall flavour, and the chili peppers added the proper amount of heat. Oh, and it was a whopping $2.50. Buy 10 get 1 free. Cheers!

There is a thread on this here: Bread Cheers!

What's the latest on opening dates? Seems like a lot of work crews there right now. Still pushing for a mid June opening? Cheers!

Some of the menu items from Cafe Kathmandu sound pretty good and I'm ready to try them: - Aaloo achaar - Chilled sesame-lemon potato salad flavored with timmur (Himalayan peppercorns) - Bhatmaas - Toasted soybeans, quick-fried with fresh ginger, garlic and chili and garnished with fresh coriander. - Singadaa - Baked pastry puffs filled with vegetable curry, and your choice of achaar (sauce) for dipping - Lhasa Momo - Steamed dumplings with a savory filling, served with your choice of sesame-cilantro or tomato chutney. - Kaauli - Turmeric-infused cauliflower with fenugreek potatoes - Khasiko maasu - Piquant goat meat in curry sauce - Kothay - Golden fried dumplings, crunchy on the outside, succulent filling on the inside, served with sesame-cilantro or tomato chutney. All sound pretty tasty to me. I'm looking forward to trying it, and also hearing from others that have! Cheers!

Vancouver, BC, and Western Canada Burger Club

You should update your website to reflect that. I can't seem to find it on there. (But perhaps I just missed it?) Cheers! -
I recently tried the Yaas Bazaar Deli on Lonsdale. It is a persian market that has a small counter serving hot meals with perhaps 10 or 15 tables. The lamb was grilled to perfection, and accompanied by a grilled tomato, persian rice, and as much bread as you would like (served in little plastic bags that you just grab a handfull of at the cashier). The place was packed, and appears quite popular among the persian community of North Van. Definitely worth checking out. The accompanying market had a nice selection of dried dates, nuts, etc. as well as persian grocery items. Cheers!

Has anyone tried Cafe Kathmandu yet? Cheers!

Another old thread on a food I've been wondering about where to find a good rendition of. Anyone found any good shabu shabu since 2003? Does Koji in fact still serve it? Cheers!
-
Do you mean One Saigon Deli at 979 Hornby? Sounds like the place you are talking about. They offer a good rendition as you have said. They are also very friendly and helpful. I do prefer Au Petit Cafe, but if craving one downtown One Saigon Deli does a passable job. Cheers!

Thought I'd add to this older thread with Jang Mo Jib on Robson Street. Open until 5am on Friday and Saturday for when you need that late night hearty Korean soup! Cheers!
-
Thought I'd revive this old thread and add some recent favourites: Au Petit Cafe on Main - probably my favourite overall so far. The bread is crisper, the meat is more tender and better seasoned, and the veggies are fresher. Compared to what you ask? To the others I've tried (which I admit is limited compared to the number of places available). Kingsway Deli at 1188 Kingsway - a close runner up to Au Petit Cafe. My favourite is the BBQ Pork Bahn Mi (#8). Others?

Now you just have to open up a Hot Chocolate bar downtown Ling! That sounds like a great recipe!
-
Hi. Got around to trying them out today. I agree with some previous posters that the churros were a bit overcooked - too crispy throughout. The hot chocolate also didn't have any cinnamon that I could detect and was expecting, so it tasted pretty similar to most hot chocolates I've had elsewhere and disappointed me. The service was extremely friendly and high spirited though. Cheers!

Exactly. Right next to Fiddlehead Joe's. Cheers!

They've got a "website" up now, and I use the term loosely. It is a single page with a ripped off google map. Superlative Lounge Giggle Material Cheers!

The Kingsway Deli has opened up at 1188 Kingsway. It is a Vietnamese take-out deli. It has a single table covered in packages for take-out, and what appears to be a very large kitchen in the back. Tried the BBQ Pork Bahn Mi (#8) which came on a crispy french loaf, with daikon, cilantro, carrots, and a slight hint of chili fish sauce. Tasty treat for a whopping $2.70. They opened on Saturday the 4th. Cheers!

Just drove past what looks to be a new Hawaii BBQ on Kingsway called "Ohana." (At least the sign looks new.) Has anyone tried it? Cheers!

Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 2)

What does "amok" mean? Cheers! -
Apparently Marmalade is now open. Passed by yesterday and it had a bunch of people sitting on the patio. Didn't look as sexy as the marketing language at all. Basically looks like a bar spilling out onto the patio. Haven't bothered stopping to look at the menu yet. Cheers!

The food stalls in Richmond public market are selling stir fried crag in either garlic or black bean sauce for $6 a crab - all nicely prepared and all. Nice deal for a quick snack! Cheers!
