  1. I'd add in La Frenz Montage if you can find a bottle. Details: La Frenz Wine List Cheers!
  2. The service was actually fine - the son was serving us and if anything, he seemed like he was trying to get on top of things and was working hard to keep up. I think the trick was our Chinese brusqeness - we ordered alot and kept him on his toes. The father cooking out back looked mean - but was in fact very nice. Perhaps this is a case of Hong Kong style of forwardness working - we were polite and nice, but we were there to eat - not to make friends with our waiter and that attitude conveys itself in all sorts of ways. My cousin has been a number of times and likes it alot - I don't she has ever noticed any real service issues. Have been to Kedah numerous times, and had service from the father, the mother, and the sons. The only time there was a slightly negative service experience was one time when we got there shortly before closing. They were definitely in a rush. But every single other time they have been nothing but friendly and on top of things. Were you perhaps there just before closing????? Cheers!
  3. Mira Yaletown apparently has closed down - they were emptying out the place today. Any idea what is coming in its place? Cheers!
  4. I'd add South Ocean Seafood in Richmond to that list for the less flashy, less expensive, and less commercial flavours. I'd consider the gelato place at the corner of Homer and Davie in Yaletown. It is far less crowded, and has a cleaner taste than Mondo. I'd consider adding Sakae to this list for sushi - one of my favourite downtown sushi places. It is in a basement with another Japanese restaurant called Aki. Sakae is a straightforward traditional sushi bar. Depends what kind of soup dumplings you are talking about. You may like Norboo, which is a Korean place that has some good soup options. Lots of tourists driving around looking for egullet recommendations. For the places outside of downtown. Within downtown you can walk to pretty much everything. Have fun!
  5. The only 3 places in the world I can think of where the sushi can be cheaper than the tacos are Sydney, Vancouver, and any major city in Japan. All pretty good places - albeit not too great for mexican food!
  6. Tried out Senhor Rooster's (3885 Rupert) last night for a change of pace. It is a small casual neighbourhood place that appears to have been recently renovated inside with new floor tiles, new paint, and newish tables and chairs. The majority of customers were speaking Portuguese. Had the flame grilled half-cornish game hen (quite the steal at $9.95) which was nicely spiced (I believe it was marinated in a chili mixture) and served with 3 sauces in bottles which had a level of complexity above what I was expecting. They were a piri-piri sauce (Brazilian pepper), a mango pepper, and a blueberry vinegar. The sauces had multiple layers which was the pleasant surprise. The game hen itself was juicy and tender on the inside with a crispy skin. It was served with a side of fries and a small salad. Again the dressing on the salad was more complex than it appeared. They do their sauces and dressings quite well there. Dessert choices included a mango mousse, chocolate mousse, and creme caramel. We tried the mango mousse and creme caramel. The mango mousse wasn't really a mousse - it was closer to a pudding. But it had a superb mango flavour. The creme caramel was slightly too set, but the caramel sauce had an excellent taste - slightly burned in the right way. Again, top notch saucing. The service was extremely friendly, seemed to know everyone that came in, and made us feel quite welcome. Will definitely return to dig into some additional sauce treats! Cheers!
  7. Welcome to eGullet! Sounds like Ling has a rival! A. ← Are you sure? They weren't all for the same day's dinner, and there was no mention of passing out phone numbers! Welcome aboard - good first post! Cheers!
  8. Foofaa is a very casual place that has some very authentic tastes. It is just off Robson Street. Cheers!
  9. Don't they serve Tako (octopus) at Octopus Garden? Cheers!
  10. Apparently there was a 3-alarm fire on the corner of Knight and Kingsway. According to the news report the produce shop and Vietnamese restaurant on the corner were involved. Not sure which corner, but something is closed.
  11. I don't know. It all sounds kind of fishy to me. Cheers!
  12. To make it something completely different, why not try one of the Harbour Air fly-n-dine deals. They leave from coal harbour: http://www.harbour-air.com/home/index.php?id=37 Just a thought. It would certainly be something different!
  13. Apparently they aren't fully illegal in the US - just the ones from S.E. Asia. Check out this article: http://www.downtownexpress.com/de_26/findingaforbidden.html\ Cheers!
  14. Sheesh. Add a comma Jamie. Or should I say: Add a comma, Jamie. Sam Po is on Kingsway just a bit east of Kingsway Deli near Knight. Cheers!
  15. I've got to agree with you, TBD. For me the bread is critical, and I enjoy the pate as well. My favourite there is the "bacon" which is actually something similar to chinese roast pork but sliced into strips like bacon. I also tried to find the place Keith mentioned, but I couldn't. Unless you mean the place that is a bit west of Sam Po Keith? There are 4 or 5 yellow awnings on that corner. Cheers!
  16. You might be interested int he truth in advertising campaign regarding MSG and its side effects: Adverse reactions to MSG Cheers!
  17. This sounds like a positive development. Shall we donate a bottle of good chipotle sauce for the condiment rack at least? Cheers!
  18. Passed by the corner of Kind Edward and Cambie today and in that corner shopping centre that used to have a Baskin Robbins I noticed there was a Vietnamese restaurant that had a big "Free Delivery" sign up. I guess Keith funded a business. Cheers!
  19. One more Kosher restaurant option apparently is: Pini's Kosher Pizza, Grocery Store and cafe. 729 West 16th Ave. Vancouver, BC Tel: 604-879-7100 Has anyone ever tried it? Cheers!
  20. Some updates on the kosher food available in Vancouver: According to Kosher in Vancouver Sabra's has added Chinese food to the menu, with a Chinese chef. Anyone tried this out? The Kosher in Vancouver blog has also posted the baking schedule for the Garden City Bakery at: baking schedule which lists items such as Caraway rye, European rye, Marble rye, New York rye, Pumpernickel rye, Kiddish challah, Water challah, Raisin square challah. Garden City Barkey is in the Garden City Mall on Blundell and Garden City Rd. Anyone tried their rye bread?!?!?! And the Kosher Food Warehouse has started a website: http://www.kosherfoodwarehouse.com/ which has a list of both their year-round and Passover products. Cheers!
  21. While not 100% of the NY experience (they tend not to have that same smokey flavour from sitting next to roasting chestnuts) Superpretzels (http://www.superpretzel.com/) are a close alternative. Now that might seem like a tease, because I can't for the life of me remember where I found them in Vancouver. But I know I have. I just can't remember where. Maybe someone else can help out? Cheers!
  22. So now you are leaving me wondering if I'm a wimp for spice, or if for some reason they thought I could handle it! Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks really go to nondual for this tip! Cheers!
  23. Not sure if this is "their" website, but it does have their menu, etc. on it: Pear Tree Cheers!
  24. Is this a different place than Ho Yuen Ke on Fraser? Or one in the same? Cheers!
