  1. Must have just missed you - we were there from 12:15 to 1:30. (Yes, we took the chairs down ourselves.) Guess by 2 they got some chips. I think this place has a lot of potential. Don't think they had goat on the menu today. But I'm sure as they get established it can be requested. They seemed extremely friendly and accomodating. Cheers!
  2. Thanks for the tip above. Today we tried out Taqueria Chilo's at 5170 Victoria Drive today for opening day. The sign posted inside says that they will be open M-F 4pm to 10pm and SS from 11am to 9pm. We had pollo (chicken), lengua (tongue), and asada (grilled beef) tacos. They were all served as pictured above with cilantro and onion on a double corn freshly grilled tortilla. There were 2 accompanying salsas in bowls on the table. One was tomatillo based (green) and the other was a red chile based one. All were excellent. We also had the seafood soup which came in two separate bowls. The first, and larger one, was red and we think had a mixture of stock from perhaps chicken and seafood. The second was a strong shrimp stock and also red. Both stocks looked the same until we tasted them. The first one contained a generous portion of small shrimp, prawns, squid, clams, and mussels. It also had onions, celery, and cilantro. The second one had some larger fresh prawns (head and shells intact) that the owner recommended peeling and adding tabasco and lemon to. Both were quite flavourful. The service was extremely friendly and clearly cares about the quality of the food and the customer's experience with it. So far this is the closest thing to authentic Mexican tacos in Vancouver I have experienced. Apparently the chef is from Durango. We will certainly repeat to work out way through the other offerings. (I do hope they get around to writing up a menu or posting their specials on the wall at some point though, as right now you just have to listen to the list from them as they describe everything that is in stock.) Cheers!
  3. Yes, it does look promising. Here is the contact info I dug up: Taqueria Chilo's 5170 Victoria Drive, Vancouver, BC 604-321-0483(tel) Cheers!
  4. Yes, I was surprised at the quality of the place considering it is 24 hours. But when I saw a 24 hours sign and a crowd during the day I figured it was worth trying as well. The beef noodle soups are quite good, and I also really enjoy the hong you chao shou there. The blend of the chili, vinegar, and sesame is quite addictive. Their fried chicken combo comes in a bento box that has a bunch of different side specialties of the day and is a nice way to round out a group meal. Cheers!
  5. Went back last night and have noticed some of the changes Daniel has been making to the place: - installed a new marble countertop for the dining bar area by the kitchen - added tablecloths and cloth napkins - modified the sauce offerings to squeeze bottles that work nicely - added a bowl of mints near the door on the way out - improved the lighting and has gotten rid of the flourescent lights All nice touches that add to the feel of the place. Thankfully the food was still as good as ever and hasn't changed. We hadn't been for a while (quite busy lately), so went back to some of the "staples" including the prawns piri-piri and the rack of lamb. The saucing was superb as always. As many have mentioned, the piri-piri sauce is good enough to finish off with the spoon that comes as a serving accessory. The fennel sauce for the lamb deserved being sopped up by a crusty Portuguese roll. The patatas brava that came as a side to the lamb had their own piri-piri based sauce which also was soaked up by the above-mentioned rolls. He provided a nice salad with incredibly ripe tomatos, avacado, and a lemon olive oil dressing. Finished off with a rich chocolate mouse and a very mangoey mango mouse. Cheers!
  6. I have not. That is on Commercial, right? I'll have to try it. Cheers!
  7. Just wanted to revive this thread and ask if there are any new additions on the casual Italian front anyplace in the Greater Vancouver area. I still haven't found one that I can really get excited about. Someone? Anyone? Please?
  8. Found an article about the place just over the border: http://www.businessjournal.org/ejournal/au.../potencial.html Best Mexican food I have found within a 1 hour drive of downtown Vancouver. By the way, there is a directory of many other options to try in the GVRD here: http://bc.seccionlatina.com/modules/xdirec...cat.php?cid=201 Cheers!
  9. I have to agree going south of the border (not too far) can turn up some truly excellent Mexican food. The best I've had is at a small mexican market that has a restaurant in it located in Bellingham. I forget the name of it, but it is slightly east of I-5 across from the Bells Fair Mall. It is in the same parking lot as a big car wash. The menus are all in Spanish only, the clientele are all Mexican, and the food is all extremely authentic. I know exactly how to drive there (and do when I'm passing through Bellingham), but I forget the name. Maybe someone else knows the name? It is only 20 minutes from the border. Cheers!
  10. I just called and checked and they seem to still be open. Where did you hear that? Cheers!
  11. Bis Moreno. It was spelled wrong. The location is on the West side of Hornby Street north of Pacific. I believe it is 1355 Hornby. Cheers!
  12. As Ling noted, it is available at many Chinese restaurants. For a nice example of it, head over to Ho Yuen Kee on Fraser street and order their beef tendon on rice plate for lunch some day. That is the best version I have found in Vancouver. You can also find it at almost every Vietnamese restaurant as one of the choices to be added to your Pho. It pairs quite well with the chili and lime from the pho. Looks like a good menu! I'm looking forward to your opening! Cheers!
  13. What's the URL for the menu? I can't seem to find it. Cheers!
  14. I'm going to place bets on the Richmond Public Market. Much more likely there, and it is in fact a 2nd floor food court. Cheers!
  15. It seems like a nice way to keep your time free to handle all the craziness of opening too. Looking forward to your opening and tasting all of this food we've been reading about! Cheers!
  16. Try this link: http://support.opentable.com/bin/request.p...topic=-1&type=f or sales@opentable.com or 1-888-OpenTable. Cheers!
  17. Thanks for stalking opentable. They corrected the posting. You are by far the most effective stalking chef I've ever met! You are able to right the wrongs of a no-show and right the wrongs of the e-commerce age. You deserve a special ring (or maybe a super fancy speedial mobile phone). Cheers!
  18. Sounds like we need to have a Daddy-A vs. BBQ Brian cook off!
  19. Guess they are still working out the bugs. Glad that my dining experience at HSG results in you stalking Opentable instead of me. Cheers!
  20. For what it is worth Choices is having a maple syrup sale. The 500ml are just a little over $6. Cheers!
  21. I'm glad I showed for my HSG open table Dine Out reservations! Not just to avoid the threat of Neil stalking me - the food was excellent as well! Highest ratings for the onion tart! That was a pleasant surprise as the starter. Truly enjoyed both the snapper and hangar steak. Excellent dishes. Opentable never did credit those 100 dining points they claim to give you when you do show up though. Hm..... Thanks again, Neil! Cheers!
  22. Has anyone heard of Top Gun Seafood someplace in Richmond? Any experiences with either their dim sum or dinners? Cheers!
  23. Memphis. And more specifically Memphis on Broadway. The Commercial drive one has had some issues as reported on Vancouver Health (search for memphis). Cheers!
  24. Generally if you ask for "Moist brisket" (the term used in the South) you will get the fatty part with all the juices - that is as long as the person behind the counter knows BBQ (which I would hope)! Cheers!
