  1. They sometimes have them at Angel Seafoods. But try giving them a call before heading over, as the majority of the Japanese chocolates they have are on sale after they got a bulk special, so they change frequently: (604) 254-2824. Another place that I've seen some of them in the past is Daiso down in Richmond: http://www.daisocanada.com/richmond.html I don't recall ever seeing them at Fujiya or Izumiya markets. But they may be able to order them for you if they don't stock them. You may also get lucky and find them at China World/Rice World down in Richmond. They have a variety of chocolates from Japan that change regularly too. Good luck!
  2. Railspur Bistro Cafe has changed owners. Apparently as of June 1 it will be called Agro-cafe and focus on sustainable coffee. Anyone know if it will still have food at all? I'm going to miss those Railspur burgers and Merguez baguettes! Cheers!
  3. Legendary Noodle from Main St. has opened up another location at 1074 Denman. Seems to have a similar menu to their place at 4191 Main, including the lamb noodles. Cheers!
  4. I loved that place! They also would frequently have small quantities of fresh produce that they got from some farmer friends that they sold in baskets by the door too. I was disappointed when it disappeared. Don't remember the name of it though, and haven't seen it resurface in my wanderings unfortunately. Cheers!
  5. What about Babushka's Kitchen in the Granville Island foodcourt? I haven't tried their perogie, but I believe they sell the ones from Red Square Bakery. One other one that came to mind that I heard about (but have not been to) is Sobieski Restaurant. A bit of a drive from Vancouver too! Cheers!
  6. European Breads on Fraser also has them frequently. Oh, and Budapest restaurant sometimes has them on the menu too. But call ahead - it is only a special there. Cheers!
  7. Excellent. So they have "chiken" too? We might want to turn deborah loose on their menu! Cheers!
  8. What happened to Pita Star on 3rd across from Swiss Bakery? Seems they are no longer open to the public. But I started seeing their pita available in various locations around town. Did they move to wholesale only?!?!?!? Cheers!
  9. I agree that you can check Parthenon for some greek style yogurts. Also I'd suggest checking some of the Persian markets in North Vancouver for persian yogurt, which you may also enjoy. I think I saw Fage at Trader Joe's last time I went south of the border too. A long way to go for yogurt. But if you have a really craving it may just be worth it! Cheers!
  10. I would imagine your friend (and you) would be quite happy with any of the creations from Ganache. His Caramel-Chocolat would make an excellent b-day cake! Good luck!
  11. They're open with windows that looked papered over?!?!?!?! Hm......Interesting choice!
  12. I haven't been there in a while, but Al Watan on Fraser is a Pakistani halal place that had excellent tandoori chicken and fresh naan. It is low on atmosphere (hole in the wall), but the food was excellent. It has been more than 6 months since I've been there though, and I heard there was some sort of ownership change. So maybe someone is more current on it? Cheers!
  13. I may have missed it in a previous post - but what happened that re-closed Dan, Modern Burger and Benny's Bagels? Is this related to the fire they had a while ago that had closed them the first time around? Cheers!
  14. Sounds like a must try. I just took a look at the menu on their website at http://www.labuca.ca/ and it looks promising! Cheers!
  15. Is Hai Phong on your list to try? They are located at 1246 Kingsway. The condiment selection is customized depending on which of their dozens of soups you order. Cheers!
  16. Ok, since many of us are still under boil-water advisories I figured I'd start a thread for those that spot particularly good water deals around town. My latest "victory" was an 18.5 litre jug at the convenience store on the corner of Hornby and Beach. It was $10. Quite heavy to carry though! Others?
  17. Omnitksy doesn't do actual butchering on-site. They do it all down at their Richmond facility which as far as I know is not open directly to the public. So if you need special cuts, etc. you have to call in advance to get it delivered to their retail shop. Other options for kosher meat include Sabra and Kosher Food Warehouse. Cheers!
  18. Kaplan's is definitely treif (non-Kosher). But they do have some Kosher pre-packaged products for sale for take-out (as does the Safeway not far from there). There is a fairly comprehensive list of Kosher restaurants and outlets in the Vancouver area here: http://www.bckosher.org/vancouver.html Cheers!
  19. Just heard about a kosher bakery that I had not heard of before. http://www.cosmobakery.com/ appears to be south of marine drive. Has anyone been? Is it any good? Good challah perhaps?!?!?!?! Cheers!
  20. Try the Korean ones from Young Brothers on Broadway. Quite reasonably priced too! Cheers!
  21. I drove by where Kedah House used to be on Fraser and it has a sign that a Malaysian restaurant is opening soon. Any news on this one? I also noticed that the new Kedah House location is currently closed due to a "small kitchen fire" according to the sign on the door. Cheers!
  22. Bacon could be hard to come by in an Israeli joint...call it a hunch! ← Don't be so sure: http://telavivis.ags.myareaguide.com/detai...=232780&SSC=427
  23. I agree entirely on Angel. Their sashimi grade fish available in their retail section is inexpensive and by far the easiest way to make sure it gets defrosted properly (unlike at many of the 99 cent sushi joints). They also have a good supply of other Japanese products to round out the menu. Some of their frozen portion cut fish is excellent quality and a good deal too. Their miso marinated sablefish produces the exact same taste you get in the fine dining establishments around town, for a quarter of the price. One word of caution on their non seafood products though - check expiration dates carefully. They have many clearance items (which are clearly marked as such if you look) that are past expiration. Fine for certain things, but you should be aware of it before buying. Cheers!
  24. To answer your question, http://lentia.com is an option at least for Valrhona. Cheers!
