Vancouver/Western Canada Ingredient Sources Topic
Vancouver replied to a topic in Western Canada: Cooking & Baking
At various times you can find it at Izumi-ya Fujiya Angel Seafoods Cheers! -
You'll get the ring when you post the pictures in this thread! Cheers!

Jang Mo Jib is opening up in the food court at Aberdeen Centre in Richmond. Guess with their semi-recent expansion into the free standing place in Richmond they are expanding some more! Cheers!

I found a source for you! In the Landsdowne mall in Richmond there is a discount chinese mini grocery store across the way from the herbal shop. In that mini grocery store (I think it is called Save something or Super Save or something like that) they have prepacked Chinese herbal soups with all the necessary ingredients. The packages have anywhere from 5 to 10 different dried herbs and flowers and come with instructions in both English and Chinese that describe the health benefits of each package. I hope some of the ones you are looking for are there. They also have a ton of the additional things you would normally find in those soups to add as extras. Cheers!

Best Chicago style pizza in Phoenix area?

Thanks! -
I checked European Bread out finally and got their Euro Flax (http://europeanbreads.com/breads/flax.html), Roman Spelt (http://europeanbreads.com/breads/spelt.html) and Baltic (http://europeanbreads.com/breads/baltic.html). I must say I really enjoyed the loaves! The Baltic in particular has a nice caraway overtone that to me is a signature of a good rye based bread. The flax bread has a nice nuttiness to it. The crusts all were well formed and the inside of the bread was fluffy. Many of their breads do not use yeast. I'm not sure how they rise exactly without the yeast - but they do. The breads are really typical of the type you find in parts of Eastern Europe. A good find! I also finally tried out Swiss Bakery (http://swissbakery.ca/) Their raizelnut whole grain (http://swissbakery.ca/Wheatbase.html) had a generous amount of hazelnuts and raisins throughout the loaf. The crust was crunchy and the inside dense. A good loaf as well. Cheers!

Thank you for that suggestion. I may have to try checking it out. I've stumbled onto one other and was curious if anyone had tried it? Nellos? http://www.azeats.com/Nellos/default.htm Cheers! -

It would be nice if they did. But unfortunately they would probably spoil in customs. Alas no Chicago pizza on this trip I suppose.... Thanks, anyway! Cheers! -
That would be great! I hope so! cheers!

I simply don't want it to be the case that the best examples of all Chinese food items are all in Richmond. ← Shall we add Ho Yuen Ke to your test list in an attempt to get some good examples in Vancouver proper? Cheers!

we were told that it was going to be a korean food mart. they have the whole second floor, i think. i'm thinking it's going to be a korean version of t&t. ← I wonder if it is the same chain of Korean groceries that is popular in the Eastern United States? Hmart homepage? Those are some wonderful stores! Or do you think they are just ripping off the name similarity? In either case it will be a welcome addition! When is it slated for opening? Cheers!

I hope his grandma recovers quickly and that he is able to provide some help and comfort by being there. In terms of East asian food not too far away from his location: - Aki robataya provides a good take on a mix between a Japanese robataya and izakaya. It is located at 745 Thurlow. - Sakae provides a fairly authentic sushi experience at 745 Thurlow as well. - Kadoya provides a decent discount sushi roll experience (in my opinion a bit better than Samurai). It is chinese operated, but they do some very creative western style rolls. It is located at 1063 Davie. - Zakkushi provides a good take on a Japanese yakitoriya. It is located at 823 Denman. - Norboo provides a reasonable Korean experience with many types of stews and noodle dishes. It is located at 1536 Robson. - I agree that Kam's is really not worth going to. For Malaysian Kedah is probably the most authentic. It is a bit far from downtown though. A little bit better than Kam's is Tropika. It is nowhere near as authentic as Kedah. But for downtown it is probably the best. It is located at 1128 Robson. There is another place called Banana Leaf located on Denman, but I have had mixed experiences there. I hope that provides a bit of comfort at this difficult time.

Arirang seems to be undergoing renovations. Anyone know if they changed owners and/or format? Or just giving it a facelift? Tried to track down Mi Sun Rae which had been previously recommended and ended up at Wonder BBQ on the corner of Sperling and Kingsway in Burnaby. Had the BBQ combo for 2 which included a nice selection of side dishes, some mandoo, seafood pajun (pancake), and a wide variety of protein for the BBQ including scallops, salmon, mussels, prawns, kalbi, bulgogi, chicken, etc. Quite the feast for $29.99 for 2 people. The meat was particularly tender compared to other Korean BBQ's I've tried in the area. I'm guessing Mi Sun Rae changed into Wonder BBQ, right? Cheers!

Just want to clarify before you head over. It is a "regular" Korean restaurant that offers a multi-course set meal. Frequently the soups they offer on that multi-course meal are Korean herbal soups. I imagine you can order them by themselves as well. One thing if you do have the full multi-course "royal cuisine" meal that they offer....They include one course as either sushi or sashimi. Trade that out for another Korean dish. Their sushi is nothing special. They will usually let you trade that off for something else. I believe you can also order a la carte there, and perhaps just the soups. But I've never tried to. Cheers!

They are also available from Senka cafe in Los Angeles. They might be willing to ship. Cheers!

Have you tried the various ryes available from the European Bread bakery on Fraser? Cheers!

Be Ga Ne Korean Restaurant (604) 444-3744 222-4501 North Road Burnaby, BC V3N 4R7 Cheers!

The rack of lamb the time I had it had 8 chops. For dessert ask for his blueberry flambe if he has the ingredients. His deep friend banana and apples were a nice treat last time, they were served with a caramel sauce and an apple cinnamon sauce. Cheers!
-
While it isn't Chinese herbal soup I know that Be Ga Ne in Burnaby has Korean herbal soups that are based on a similar concept. Cheers!
-
Call ahead and ask for the rack of lamb! If you give him enough time he usually can arrange it. Cheers!
-
Ahhhh....Thanks for the clarification! Both menus look really good! Looking forward to it! Cheers!
-
Ahhhh....You changed your menu from the one listed originally, eh? Hm....

Relying heavily on opentable to book, so far has resulted in Chambar, Hamilton Street Grill, and Feenie's. Maybe 1 or 2 more to add. Cheers!

The Tourism Vancouver website still appears to be having load issues. The Opentable website now has a list of the restaurants they can book at that are participating: http://www.opentable.com/promo.aspx?m=73&pid=158 Unfortunately it doesn't list the menus (at least not that I can find). Not sure if that URL will work or not for others as it was after I logged in. Cheers!
