  1. So any news on what is going to be replacing Riley's Cafe which has been closed since December? It seems like a premium location (located across the seawall from C), so I'm surprised it has taken a while for it to have something else open up. Any ideas?!?!?! Cheers!
  2. Haha. The thin greasy kind - yes, NY style. We like to call it well oiled. I think the other type you are referring to is what they call Sicilian style in NY. Not sure what it is called here, as I haven't seen it anyplace. Do they serve it in Vancouver? Cheers!
  3. I found shiso leaves for sale - Fujiya and Angel Seafood both have them available. Just not the plant. Hm....A challenge indeed. Are you going to make me start a grow-up??!!?!?!? Cheers!
  4. It sounds like you are looking for European style thin-crust pizza. While it is not a high-end Yaletown establishment, have you tried Amadeus? Their website is here. I have never taken their delivery but have had slices at their pizzeria and generally it is quite good. Also there is of course Nat's Pizza if you are looking for more of a NY style. Their website is here. Both deliver downtown according to their websites. Cheers!
  5. Try the special colombian plate that they sometimes offer on the chalkboard. A nice selection of several foods hard to find in Vancouver otherwise. I haven't tried teh Salvadorian yet, but I bet it is good too. Cheers!
  6. I'd certainly put in my vote for Kedah House on Fraser. Delicious Malaysian cuisine. Highlights are the roti and chili peppercorn shrimp. Total damage for 2 with a good sized meal normally runs around $20-$25 - and well worth it! Cheers!
  7. Butternut squash roasted with brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, honey, lemon juice, and ginger. Yummy! Cheers!
  8. Unfortunately, Art's closed sometime last year and the building was bulldozed. I think it's condos now. Art you sure? I haven't seen any bulldozing there. There is bulldozing 1 block east on the corner of Howe and Pacific - where the service station and Hungarian restaurant used to be - they are turning it into the Pomaria development. But isn't Urban Garden the one adjacent to the seafood restaurant? I think that is still there. Cheers!
  9. Thank you so much! I look forward to hearing! I am planning on keeping them on an inside windowsill until they are hearty. Cheers!
  10. I'm so afraid of starting things from seeds - having had such a brown thumb on past attempts. But shiso is really that much easier? Hm......
  11. Thanks for the tips! I just called Fujiya and they said they don't have it right now, but may in the Fall. I would guess summer myself. But hey, what do I know? I appreciate you checking next time you are at Park Royal, Chef! And I will certainly check that organic market by the Quay next time I'm in North Van. Thank you! Cheers!
  12. Hi. Does anyone know where I can purchase a live shiso plant to add to my herb planter? I've tried a few garden shops and none seem to have one. Any tips greatly appreciated! Cheers!
  13. Is Jojo's cafe still there? Haven't seen any mentions of it recently. Cheers!
  14. A fresh Mango. It was the perfect ripeness and sweetness. Yummy!!!!
  15. Thanks for the fun read! You reminded me of a few of my favourite spots that I've neglected to visit recently! So the real question - what is the first thing you eat after you are done blogging and no-one is watching? What were you holding out for the entire week and now feel free to eat?!?!?! Cheers!
  16. I'd always thought that gyros was more closely associated with Greece... ← I had thought they originated in New York City. I dug around on the net a bit and found: History of the gyro and confirmed that it is attributed to New York City by most. Cheers!
  17. Hm....A few more after thinking hard (taking America to mean the "Americas"): McIntosh Apples Empire Apples Caesar Salad Cobb Salad Gyro Muffoletta Montre Cristo Sandwich Dagwood Sandwich Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich Canned albacore tuna Fortune Cookies Hush Puppies Subs/Heroes/Po'Boys/ Chicago Italian Beef Sandwich Philly Cheesesteak Spiedies Popcorn NY Pizza Chicago Pizza Potato Chips Bubble Gum Powerbars Moonpies Oreos Rice Krispies Treats Doughnuts with holes S'mores Spam and who could forget McDonalds, Coke, etc. Oy, we're such a healthy bunch. Cheers!
  18. And I was hoping it was just a new spelling for the Salt Lick BBQ from Texas - which has one of the best briskets I've tasted anywhere!
  19. Hey.....I had dinner at Yuji's last night (Wednesday). Which is what I guess you mean - as Thursday night is not here yet. (Oh and Yasue and Tomo mentioned you were coming in later.) Our two favourites last night were the tender beef tounge in ponzu sauce - the tounge was so tender (It had similar texture to flank, and the ponzu added a nice citrus overtone), and the thin salt-grilled beef tounge (which was covered in green onions and sesame seeds, was nicely grilled to the point of just starting to carmelize on the edges - really similar preparation to how many a Korean BBQ grills tounge). We also had those yam fries again. That "tartar" sauce they make for it is really delicious and pairs well with the crispy outside layer on the fries. Overall a very nice meal. We will be back. The night before tried House of Salisse, and reported on it in the Ethiopian thread. Yum!!!! I'm happy. Cheers!
  20. Yes, that was the name of it. Thanks for refreshing my memory! Cheers!
  21. Thank you for recommending House of Selassie! I just popped in there for a quick bite. The only other Ethiopian place I have tried in Vancouver was someplace on East Broadway, and House of Selassie is SO MUCH better! I really enjoyed the doro wat and lamb. I will definitely be back. I pass by the location all the time, and never noticed it. So thank you for pointing it out!!!!! Reminds me of the food available in Washington D.C. in Adams Morgan. That is a tough level to match, and House of Selassie surpassed it. I was quite happy. Cheers!
  22. Kedah House - returned again for that yummy chili peppercorn shrimp. Started off this time with the beef satay - which was juicy and well marinated. The peanut dipping sauce has a slightly different spicing than at other places - and in a positive way! It was yummy. Also had the curry chicken noodle soup. Rich coconut curry with tender chunks of chicken and perfectly cooked noodles. A fabulous meal again. Total bill just a little over $20. Really nice family feel to the place as well. Trafalgar's Sweet Obsessions - we had a St. Honoré and a pear slice. The St. Honoré was different than ones I've had in the past. In the past they normally have had caramel holding things together. This was more of a chocolate version. The chocolate cream filling the puffs around the edges was superb. The pastry on the bottom holding things together was flaky and crisp - delicious! The pear slice was a good pastry with a very tart pear sliced finely on top. Good overall. Some of their other cakes looked really good and will have to try them over time! Added bonus the service was really friendly and chatty. BeGaNe Korean Grill - First time here. I will return. It is located in the Korean shopping mall near the corner of North Road and Lougheed highway in Burnaby/Coquitlam. We had a set menu with a total of about 10 courses. They offer 3 levels of set menu. The one we had was about $22/person. Highlights were the jellyfish wasabi salad, the grilled black cod (with that lovely blackened crispy carmelized edge on the skin), chap-jae (a nice version of the dish with extra spinich and mushrooms mixed in), kal-bi (which was perfectly grilled and with excellent marinade), crab in chili sauce (soft shelled crab marinated in that red chili paste common in Korean cuisine), okra in chili sauce, beef brisket soup (tender pieces of brisket and several veggies), and several other yummy dishes. Cheers!
  23. It is located at 3151 West Broadway. Here is the link to the location: Google maps to Young Brothers Thank you to everyone else for the tips! Keep them coming! Cheers!
  24. This thread has inspired me to start a hunt for the other alternatives to GI for produce around the city. I've started a separate thread: Produce best bets Any comments much appreciated!
