  1. Ok, so I'm looking for those hidden produce gems around the city. My favourite so far is Young Brothers market on West Broadway which has very fresh product at very reasonable prices. Another recent find is the new produce store in Aberdeen Centre in Richmond. Weird layout that feels like it has way too much space. But the produce is fresh and reasonably priced. Others? What are your favourites? Cheers!
  2. Any sort of soup - matzoh ball or thai lemongrass. Oh, and Cold FX - which I believe is a ginseng extract. What a wonderful invention - it actually works! Cheers!
  3. Hm....I know which omakase dinner this came from! I wonder if it has anything to do with things like planning for the future, or living in the moment? So do all those last biters (me included) tend to invest for future gain in other things besides the dinner plate? While those first biters live life enjoying the moment, but not thinking as much about the future? Cheers!
  4. I can confirm Ling's sighting of fresh black truffles at Urban Fare. Give them a call to check before heading over, of course. But they have them normally in the cheese section under glass. Cheers!
  5. To quote someone famous from a few days ago. Mr&Mrs.?!?!?!? I'm not that old! Today Go Fish (as previously reported). We had the halibut and chips and a tuna sandwich. I have to say I prefer the grilled tuna to the fish&chips. Both were quite good. I just really love the flavourings presented on the tuna sandwich. It has wasabi mayo and a ponzu sauce which combine wonderfully to highlight the freshness of the tuna. Followed up by the Elysian Room for espresso. Delicious as always! Yesterday revisited Nat's pizza for a NY pizza fix. Still the closest thing to NY pizza in Vancouver! Cheers!
  6. Funny they have it listed on their schedule to only take 10-15 minutes depending on the time of day from the West Cordova stop to the island. Not that bad. I've only taken it once - going the other way. And it did in fact only take about 12 minutes. On the question of if a local discount program would bring locals in...Definitely! Will it bring people that shop sometimes there a bit more often? Probably. If they charged an upfront fee for the card those that bought it would definitely come back more often! The delivery idea is an interesting one. Vancouver in general is a bit behind other major cities on delivery. We have Stongs and HCGets, but what else? Cheers!
  7. I echo the sentiment about longer hours. I tend to go shopping in the evening, and by then the market is closed. The 6pm closing time is not entirely accurate even. They start to pull things down and start cleaning around 5:15 or 5:30 frequently. Perhaps they should have a Vancouver resident discount card to pull people in, and address any price concerns. Keep the prices where they are for the tour bus folks, but let locals shop at local prices. Just a thought. By the way, there is a bus from downtown too. But not a direct non-stop shuttle bus. You can take the 50 from downtown (I believe it starts over in Gastown actually) and it stops right at the base of the island. Cheers!
  8. Bummer! So what's the next best thing for that frank fix? Cheers!
  9. Do report back! (But maybe in a separate thread to avoid drift!) Cheers!
  10. Passed by Johnny's yesterday and noticed it was closed. (ok, I'm slow.) I read the sign on the door and it mentioned failure to pay rent. Did they move someplace else? Go out of business? Do they still have a store someplace on the North Shore? Cheers!
  11. Haven't seen them served anywhere, but they are easy to make at home. Just take some very cold whole milk and put it into a glass. Add seltzer (don't use club soda - use seltzer). Try to pour the seltzer "roughly" to make things foam up more. If you happen to have a seltzer bottle that works best with the additional pressure. After it has foamed up and put a nice head on the top add chocolate syrup and stir with a long spoon. Don't mix the chocolate into the head to give that nice white top and chocolate soda below. Enjoy!
  12. I'd certainly add Long's Noodle House (4853 Main) to the list. Try their wine soaked chicken. Yum! Budapest at 3250 Main has a nice selection of Hungarian food including a tasty goulash. If you enjoy Buffalo wings, try Wing Nuts at 4444 Main. Their "seriously hot" sauce tastes very similar to the wings in Buffalo, NY. And for a nice machaca torta try Duffin's Donuts of all places at 4898 Main. Yum again! They have an eclectic mix of items ranging from the machaca to fried chicken to donuts. Strange mix, but tasty machaca! Cheers!
  13. I agree with some of the previous posters: Cathay Pacific's lounge at Hong Kong is excellent for airport food. The business class lounge offers the noodle bar with custom prepared noodle dishes, as well as a sandwich and pastry bar. The first class lounge offers a nice set of items last time I was there which included sashimi, ha gao, shiu mai, leg of lamb, a nice variety of fresh salads, chocolates, and Haagen Daaz... The public areas of Narita have a nice variety of standard Japanese fare including sushi bars, udon shops, and tonkatsu. The name of the BBQ mentioned above for Austin, TX is the Salt Lick which has a lovely BBQ brisket. Their sauce is rather unique for TX BBQ. I believe it has some miso in it. Austin also has Amy's Ice Cream which is one of those places that does the custom mixes on a marble slab. The new Continental wing at the Houston airport has a mexican restaurant that has very good fajita tacos as well. I can't recall the name of it. In the San Francisco airport, definitely wander over to the international terminal food court. It is outside of security so you can pick up food before heading over to a domestic flight too. It has a selection of various types of food that are a bit better than what is available in the domestic terminals. And here at home in Vancouver you can pop upstairs to the Fairmont Hotel in the airport for a decent variety of quality hotel fare. I've only had their room service (on a late night before an early morning flight) and it was very good, but they also have public restaurants available which I'm sure are of similar quality. Happy travels! Cheers!
  14. Biz Moreno is also another likely suspect for maybe having some in the cellar. Cheers!
  15. In the past when I've spoken with Niva and Jeff they told me their wines are only available to the general public directly from the winery since they have such a small production run and can sell out directly. They did ship a case of wine for only $10, which was well worth it. The wine arrived in perfect condition quite quickly. I believe they do have a commercial distributor somewhere in North Van if you are a commercial buyer. Get onto their e-mail list, and then order when the new release comes out. Their alexandria is a pleasant one to try when you are doing a spicy stir fry, etc. too. If you do find a local source, do let us know! Cheers!
  16. They made a nice visual surprise when biting into the burger. Cheers!
  17. I might as well chime in on this one as well. It was a lovely introduction for me to HSG. It will not be my last visit. Delicious lamb burger!!! Neil, what type of peppers were those mixed into the burger by the way? Cheers!
  18. For the sake of completeness I ran by there today. I went in - even though the outside pointed to negative possibilities. I looked at the 4 pies they had warming on the heater. Not chicago style. More like pizzahut deepdish style. Any other options?!?!?!?!?!
  19. My apologies if public data about a website offended some - apparently enough for the post to be deleted. Just in case you are curious about the source of the data. You can find the owner of websites in Canada (.ca) by entering the domain name at: Cira Whois which gave the ownership info for citychef.ca. I was just trying to respond to Chef's inquiry about the ownership of the company. Cheers!

    Salsa

Here is a link to their website if you'd like to get some more details of what they offer: Que Pasa Foods Website Cheers!

    Salsa

They have a small selection of salsas in a jar at Parthenon. But I haven't tried any of them. There is also the local salsa in a jar manufacturer Que Pasa located down in Richmond (and available at many outlets) but I haven't tried their salsa verde either. Overall I find many of their salsa to be a bit bland. But I'm not sure where your taste preference is. Cheers!
  22. Szechuan Chongquin - my first time trying the inexpensive ($2/plate) dim sum. Lots of food, little cash. A nice egullet gathering as mentioned by others. , Elysian Room - espresso and a good parking spot. What a combo! La Petite France - Sacher torte. Yuuuum!!!!! Sadly no Ch'i for me that day. Still gotta head over there. Umami - particularly enjoyed the rack of lamb and the nori and shiso albacore spring rolls. Very creative sauce pairings that complemented the natural flavours. The macha tiramisu was an inventine spin. Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts Cafe - chocolate raspberry mini-cake. The students did a good job on this one! Cheers!
  23. I thought he was screaming in pain after having lost a relative. Hm....
  24. Sadly I haven't tried it yet. That picture is from their website which you can find at: Tomahawk Restaurant Website But it is on my list to try now! Cheers!
  25. Is this the one: They seem to call it Yukon style bacon. Cheers!
