We went to this place today but it wasn't called arirang it had another name. 318 Broad Palisades Park etc... Great stuff as you mentioned, as we came in they were making trays of golden goodness that I had no idea what it was but they offered me a try! It tasted like fruit (I think it's banana's and apples?) & honey with almost a tea or ginger aftertaste of some sort delicious, not in a bad way or anything. Anyhow I got a small container of this freshly made stuff, hubby bought a big jar of kimchee (he can never find kimchee spicy enough, he adds red-pepper flakes and/or garlic etc too!) and we got 2 kimchee dumplings and 4 of the beef. (The beef, which had cellophane noodles and cabbage in them as well!) Anyhow, they are not sweet so I add a dollop of hoisin to make it more to my liking, you can add soy too! Also I got these things that resemble potato pancakes but they said there is brown sugar? or sugar? inside, we'll try all our goodies tomorrow breaking down a bit for his non-sugary, low carb plan. heh If anyone knows that the fruit thingy is called or the "pancakes" please kindly let me know! Thanks. This place is a MUST to go to but they don't speak english there but a nice guy walking by told them what we wanted (though pointing works...really!) I know my numbers in Korean and a few words or so, and hubby can read it a bit.... hahn, dool, sed... etc. but that didn't work too well here, it works better in places like Han ah reum.

Beth you won't be disappointed! This and SOB (Silver oak bistro) are on the top of my "go to" lists when we go out again to eat as a couple, hubby and I. We only go out once a month so it has to be good. I'm also considering The Chart House - I hope it's good too! So it'll be Fortunato's, SOB & TCH! in some order.

Also preferably a sat or sunday night, again preferably at or close to bergen co as possible. Thanks!

Rosie, you're NOT missing much by not eating white castles... they are the food equivalent of a "colon cleanser". Some call them slyders because they slide down the digestive track faster than Luge Olympiads! I do like them on the rare occasion that I want to avoid people in fine crowds or need to endure stomach cramps or gas till all wee hours of the morning! I think if you're UNDER a certain age they are a must but if you're over a certain age, use caution. Stick to a place like SOB or Fortunato for better digestion ease!

I forget did they have a site? I was thinking of going back there if they are open

My hubby used to make his mac n cheese from scratch using a mix of sharp and mild cheddar, heavy cream and other "secret ingredients" like mustard powder etc... I liked the fact that he cut in either sliced ham or grilled chicken. It was always a hit with me!

Ever consider making a falafel type moufaleta (SIC?) something like falafel balls, black olives and either (Evoo or hummus or t'china) with or without "salad" and with choice of sundried or regular tomatoes for flavor? Just a thought?

Any places in Bergen or Passaic Counties or Points North? Montclair is nice but parking is sometimes a pain unless the places have on-site parking. I'm a bit mobility impaired. Thanks... keep the ideas coming, I'm sharing with a friend who's anniversary is the week before. Much appreciated!

Thanks everyone so far again! Been to medieval times years ago... cute but I was looking for more of a "show" type thing. Dinner and jazz sounds nice I was thinking of checking out a few local restaurants for a piano or jazz combo supper. I've gone to "The Restaurant" in Hackensack before for that reason! Keep the ideas coming my friends here at Egullet! Thanks for the suggestions so far...

2 people maybe 3 or 4... been to dave n busters I love it but they don't! LOL but great idea thanks. I wish mars 2112 or one of those fun "NY theme" restaurants were in NJ! but please more ideas if you all have any to spare - pretty please! Thanks.

Though I am pretty firmly set on wanting to go to SOB for my birthday... I was looking for a "theme restaurant" or a restaurant with a little entertainment or something extra (aka FUN!) to do for my birthday for one of the mealtimes. (Guess adult version of chuck-e-cheese or "splash party" or something!) But not New York City. Does anyone know where we could celebrate a birthday in a more fun way in Northern NJ (Middlesex county and points north please) Thanks! (No A/C I'm not keen on gambling, though I do win alot!) Most comedy clubs aren't that good either in NJ... and I love good comedy but dislike myself or my guests being the brunt of the jokes. Maybe a Lunch & Spa I was thinking or Dinner Theater... or some kind of show/tour... or something? Thanks for all your help everyone!

Hubby likes the pulled pork sandwiches at hot dog heaven and I like their pierogies with cooked onions and sour cream YUM (haven't had that in a while) also I like their italian hot-dogs they are actually quite good with a side of cheese fries there! YUM! Fortunately (or unfortunately) I love the food on that whole corner since it's a block from our company office, which I visit once a month and about 5 miles or less from my house! (lucky me!)

Did you ever get to her place yet? I was thinking of asking either Picnic or some other local place to make a small "2 course set up" for lunch for my bday as my boss wants me to choose a place! I want to get a choice of salad, soup or appetizer and a main course (we have the drinks and dessert) I'm growing weary of the "chinese food", "middle eastern food" or "italian food" choices but I know he's on a budget of average 7.50 to 10. pp. Also a question to Ms C Nunn, any more demonstrations or events coming up in your future? Curious minds want to know!

We all ended up going to Bhoj for lunch today, instead of the dynasty - it was superb as usual... shame that readables like the NYT and other periodicals doesn't have a review on it yet from what the owner mentioned today! The Star Ledger however did review it fairly recently...

Hi Mike! HI White Truffle Chick! (What did you eat?!) Did Chef Gary throw any of those delicious hush puppies at Mike Feygin after being called an SOB?! Give us the dirt .... enquiring minds want to know!

Though I do like White Castles as much as the next guy/gal... I just can't see it being romantic as spending supper in front of a crackling fire with your sweetie. My taste runs more like "The Restaurant" or "The Park Steakhouse" or "Stony Hill Inn" type of restaurants for a romantic supper for two. We will be spending our belated VD or early Anniv. most likely at SOB - that being said! which I think I mentioned in an earlier posting... SOB is on top of my list so far!

I went to whole foods in Ridgewood and they had their "buffalo mozzarella" and roasted red peppers with olives in like an olive oil marinade in mini-cup samplers... it was sOOoooOOo delicious. I went back to buy it but they had sold out! LOL

After being snowed in yesterday I wanted to start the week out right today! For lunch from Picnic in Emerson: “The Paint and Paper” — also known as a Godfather. Fresh mozzarella, roast beef, jus, garlic butter on a round roll. $6.50 AND (for lunch tomorrow) “Emerson Dental” — grilled chicken breast, whole wheat bread, avocado, lettuce, tomato hint of fat free dressing. $6 * My version -regular tomato (due to allergies! and instead with sundried tomato and some smoky bacon YUMMY!) Tomorrow we go out for a little buffet lunch in Hackensack on the border the little chinese/italian all you can eat joint with my co-workers. What are you having for lunch for Valentines day? Reach out and hug someone!
-
My mother in law was read the valentine's day special/menu from Picnic and she kvelled how she'd love to try it - shame she lives in Maywood. I may order something good tomorrow though. Picnic's stuff looks mighty tempting... but if I'm feeling ambitious I may go out and enjoy some sunshine - we'll see! Jeff and I will celebrate it next week for our anniversary when the prices return to normal (or this weekend!) - I told him we must go to SOB for supper if not our anniversary for my birthday! YUM!

Restaurants in Rockland County close to NorthernNJ
Anonymouze replied to a topic in New York: Dining
Well it's about 5 miles from Saddle River/River Vale/Woodcliff Lake area so I think I'll be popping in again any day now! :-) -
By picnic the nearest thing for coffee/tea/scones etc... is either the bagel shop across from her place or dunkin donuts about 1/2 block down, neither are particularly appealing. The only problem I see for picnic is visibility because it's hard to know that she's there in that location, you really need a BIG BOLD street sign (which I think the town would not allow) or something to show where she is... her food is really tasty but if I didn't know about next door to her hot dog heaven or "laurel"? some, chinese place I probably would keep driving by... sad to say. (Maybe talk to Arvind about putting a sign in front of his building across from the train stop, for a day or two at 24 Emerson West, he owns that building, he's upstairs or maybe in front of "HI-LO" hairshop) *shrug* Maybe the outdoor concept will bring people in via word-of-mouth etc and I'd love a place for a cold or warm cup of tea that is different being a NON-Coffee drinker! My latest "turn-ons" are golden oolong, twining (the gold bag) or cold green tea over cracked ice! YUM
-
I love quiche but wouldn't attempt to cook it (I hate labor intensive things or getting my hands "dirty") heh... but looking at these recipes make me think maybe I may want to try just once! I usually buy them at A&P in woodcliff lake.

Actually the owner of Bhoj in Saddle Brook area, makes great dishes... some are goat too I believe, if you were to ask him he'd surely make curried goat for you. (not jamaican though) also I work with a guy who is a great cook so I hear (he lives about 1 block away from picnic too!) he could probably whip you up a batch too if you wanted me to ask him!
-
Actually Han Ah Reum market in Ridgefield has good chinese and korean food (authentic taste/style) in their food court if you are brave enough to view the pictures and read the names. They don't tell you what is in it and to ask isn't worth the headache! LOL

I know when the crowd comes off the train at between 430ish and 615ish I see a lot of them go to dunkin donuts for coffee and donuts also some go to the bagel shop before it closes that is by you for coffee, tea etc as well, so I am sure that if you can cater a bit to that evening summer crowd that might work. I am lucky in the fact that I'm not a coffee drinker however I used to love to have a hot cocoa or hot tea at around 4pm and we used to send a friend out every day on DD runs to get some frappachino and stuff. Hope this helps?!
