  1. love the freestyle dining concept. was on the Norwegian Dawn recently(the one with the whole 70ft wave incident). days before the wave incident, i ate at what was their crown jewel restaurant, Le Bistro. had a lovely time. my favorite was the chocolate fondue with the fruits in a pineapple boat-shaped container. first course was escargots with butter sauce and herbs. second is a beef connsomme with julienned vegetables with a puff pastry dome. bit disappointed, the vegetables were really thin for my liking. main course was filet mignon, potato gratinee, vegetables, goose-liver sauce with a shaving of black truffles( they skimped on the truffles though). then dessert which was the chocolate fondue. surprsingly they didn't have creme brulee on the dessert menu. it was nice eating dinner next to a matisse painting. i ate at the main dining rooms aboard the ship and the places that you had to pay extra. the place that i truly avoided was the buffet areas. for breakfast each morning i had a croissant with brie and bacon bits, dark hot chocolate with extra whipped cream to wash it down. i ate at the asian fusion restaurant bamboo, they had good sushi though no japanese sushi chef . i ate at an italian themed restaurant called la trattoria, their pizzas tasted like frozen pizzas but appetizers were decent. i also ate at salsa, a tex-mex type restaurant. had the mesquite grilled fajitas, they were tasty. the ship had a chocolate buffet. having gone to the NY chocolate show, i was disappointed at the showpieces. it looked like they were using cheap chocolate to make the show pieces, though the ice scuptures were really cool. the offerings looked great, but a lot were misses. one of the chocolate mousse tasted more like a creamy chocolate jello. the drinks aboard the ship were ok, some were too sweet others were too bland. sold evian and pellagrino for 3 dollars a pop. one of the favorite things the dining staff did was that for breakfast, lunch or dinner, once you sit down, they fold out the napkin for you. that was indulgence right there...considering it's my first cruise and i don't spend much time going out to dinner in nyc. my favorite ice cream treat was the vanilla soft serve with chocolate syrup and roasted coconut. the going away bbq and most bbq's on the ship, they had burgers that were all pre-made. their ribs were good but the sauce needs tweaking. all in all despite the wave incident and cutting out nassau bahamas, it was a lovely cruise.
  2. sucks i didn't see johnny luzzini, sam mason, michael laiskonis, jehangir mehta(sry if i spelled the name wrong) on the list. the only male pastry chef i saw was bill yosses.
  3. fg, this daily gullet is sick. what time does the show air on pbs??
  4. at a friend's house, my friend served fried fish in this soy sauce-jacked sauce. you couldn't even taste the fish..all you could taste was the saltiness of the sauce. and since my friend was going through one of those diet phases, my friend served a trio of no-carb ice cream, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. that no-carb ice cream tasted like crap.
  5. maaan..i forgot the name of this dim sum restaurant in chinatown..all i remember was that it was on the second floor of a mall...they had the best snails in some kind of brown sauce and bbq and steamed chicken feet.
  6. gelato with potato and gazpacho with potato?? what was she thinking?! what where the dishes alex lee make? did he also do a "potato" dessert??
  7. who were the judges besides steingarten?? hmph, i think cat cora shud've lost even if it was her first gig as an iron chef.
  8. the les halles logo with skulls, toque, and the knive dripping with blood is sick for a tattoo.
  9. What happend to this guy? Last time i heard, he quit Daniel and the thing about him opening his own wine shop? Is it already opened??
  10. FG, the excerpt rocks. I can't wait to pick up my own copy of your book. When are you going to be doing book signings?
  11. is there any place on the web where i can find an excerpt of the book??
  12. when's the lee vs. cat cora episode??
  13. surprised yes. sad, a bit maybe. foodtv has really boring shows 'cept for some iron chef usa episodes...i liked the episodes when they had eric ripert or something on the show....does anyone know what sara moulton is going to do after this??...anyways, good luck to her and her future ventures.
  14. never been to le bernardin, but one of these days i'd like to go there. it's cool they kept four stars for the past years. congrats to chef ripert and maguy le coze.
  15. exactly how do you cut over the board rather than into the board??
  16. those vanilla cones dipped in chocolate from any mr. frosty truck count right?
  17. i like mine warm. i always make it with sticky rice and mix cocoa powder in it. i add condensed milk and evaporated milk after the rice cooks. it's good with these little salty thin fish things i got from a friend. the saltiness of the fish balances out the chocolate rice pudding.
  18. i just checked the wd-50 site, are they running the nine course menu for $95 for the entire winter season??

    Avocadoes

avocado ice cream, now that's good stuff. I haven't made it from scratch at home yet. but i buy a half gallon(i think) at my local oriental store. it's bit more expensive than the ones you get at your local grocery store but it's worth it.
  20. too bad they didn't have the ICA challengers sign some stuff. if cat cora beats alex lee(which will never happen in a million years), i think hell wud've frozen over.
  21. chocolate muffin and any kind of danish are my favorites.
  22. durian is yummy. haven't tried dragonfruit yet though. what does it taste like?
  23. i hope that if they do another dessert battle, it'll be only desserts only. none of that "new rule" sh*t. if you watch the original iron chef, sakai did a valentine's pastry battle vs. a lady chef. anyway, it was only desserts, no savory stuff. i still don't get how the judges score the food. is it by taste and presentation overall, even if you can't taste the secret ingredient much??
  24. unagi's my favorite. toro, sometimes.
  25. one of the judges said that batali's chocolate pasta dish was good overall(i think, but personally i wouldn't touch that thing), but couldn't taste the chocolate. that occurred a lot when the judges tasted batali's offering. not as much as when they were tasting michael's dishes.
