  1. I don't see much of it grown by home gardeners anymore, which might have something to do with a liabilty issue since leaves are poisionous and we are living in such litigious times. When I was growing up, everybody seemed to have scads of it, for some strange reason, growing next to the garage. "Whole Paycheck" always charges what the traffic will allow. I've seen it at local grocery stores for alot less.
  2. I always ask several people starting with the most "arty" place in town (gallery ,antique store etc. ) I ask very specific questions like. What is your favorite____place and what do you eat when you go there. I have to say I have a sixth sense and often stumble upon good food in unknown towns. Avoid asking motel clerks, cops, and truck drivers.
  3. This list seems oddly lopsided. What's up with the flagrant dis of La Belle France? Could it be a "political" issue?
  4. I'm working on a cookbook (with a hook) as we speak. It will be about 200 pages. Two publishers have expressed interest in pulishing it but an editor friend has suggested I tweak it slightly and pitch the project to a large national retailer, who would pay for publishing and promoting it. I'd have to give up all rights and take a flat fee with a small percentage after a certain ponit of sales. I would also be willing to travel the country to pitch the book by doing cooking demos in their stores using their products. I have one book (a guide book) already published called, "New Mexico Chow Restaurants for the Rest of Us" published by The Intrepid Traveler. In fact it got a rave review today on: www.RoadTripAmerica.com. I have no clue what kind of flat fee is realistic for an unknown writer like myself (I'm assuming the book would do well for them). Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, Chow Guy Scott Sharot
  5. Exactly! What she said. Besides if a sandwich is worth it's weight there will be no room for salad.
  6. House of Joy in Jerome. Must reserve FAR in advance. Edit: Just in case you're interested: 928-634-5339 ← I keep hearing about this place and we'll be going to Arizona later this spring. What kind of food do they serve and what's the price range?? (It sounds Chinese and expensive).
  7. The World 66 map was fun, thanks for the link. I maped 17 countries and 48 states.
  8. Many thanks for the clarifications.
  9. I have an audition for a film later today (as wild west bartender in 1880). Can anyone explain the line. "Tequila you boys would be wanting but you'll have to do with mescal". Is /was mescal like homemade tequila? Is it like rot gut? Any information would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks.
  10. Thanks so much Andie. I will be trying this one very soon.
  11. I aslo had some menu items using quinoa. I made "quinoa caviar" . I'd puree kalamata olives and seaweed together with a little olive brine, then mix it with quinoa then fill enidve leaves with the mixture and garnish with a sqeeze of fresh lemon. I also did tabuli with quinoa. In fact I have a hard time using bulghur wheat for tabuli since then.
  12. Your post made me realize that my copy of vol 1 of "Mastering the Art..." is also my most messed up cookbook... AND.. It's my second copy... the first one I got for XMas in 1966 and it fell apart years ago.
  13. For me, E Gullet often helps stir the memory or spark interest in something new and unfamiliar which then gets the imagination going and then the creativity flows.
  14. All of the above.... and they also don't slip as easily on slick floors. And besides they are helpful for folks like me that are vertically challenged.

    Grilled Cheese

I like to make them with monterey jack/ cheddar cheese with sliced tomatoes and a smear of wasabi or hot mustard inside, before grilling with way too much butter.

    Easter Brunch

I just found out I'll be supplyimg the dessert for an Easter brunch. I'm going to make galaktoboureko, a wonderful lemony farina custard with filo pastry. I'm told there will be a baked ham, rosemary roasted lamb, asparagus, rosti potatoes and a Greek Salad.
  17. There is also another place north ...up the road apiece at the Lemitar exit of 25. called Coyote Moon Cafe. It's a funky roadside spot with really great green chile. He grows his own. Nothing fancy but darn good chile. The green chile stew is made with beef and shards of spicy chile.

    Crepes

Crepe Suzettes are my favorite with Grand Marnier and brandy. Last week, I was served an open faced crepe at a French Bakery. It was folded so ingredients were exposed down the center, instead of filled. I found it very strange... The owner told me, "That's how they are served in Paris". Was she refering to Paris Texas? I have never seen this.... Anyone???
  19. Here goes with some of the places I discovered when in Flagstaff last week. Oregano's was good for Italian and pizza. Mountain Oasis was a great little eclectic place for lunch. Racha Thai good inexpensive Thai food. Macy's was a "hippy dippy" place that was fine for lunch but painfully slow service. Hunan was just alright for their lunch special (huge portion for around 5 bucks).
  20. I like celery...but it never really works for me, to sate hunger. I especially like celery root, roasted or with mashed potatoes It's like celery to the seventh power. I also like Dr. Brown's Celery Soda, which I rediscovered just a few weeks ago.
