  1. It's actually a huge, secret plot. See, they get you addicted to NYC pizza, pistrami, peking duck and then as you leave the city a secret shield zaps any ability to replicate what you just ate. You forgot to inlcude bagels And they don't have crabs
  2. Yep, that's what I meant. It was very helpful for keeping all the Marks and Mikes apart, as well as putting handles and real names together.
  3. Are rice school lunches uncommon? I am surprised so much bread is eaten at your school torakris. Does the quality of lunch vary from the area to area? Are the lunches better in some areas because they are wealtheir? Do you try to get into a school because they are known for the lunches?
  4. especially preparing a Japanese bento..... This is really a great help to mothers and my kids love the food. My super picky oldest daughter has also learned to love natto, she still won't eat it at home but she eats all of it at school. They get natto at school!!!! How? That's so cool. Please tell me they do not have to open enough small containers to get natto for 1000 kids. Does it come in big quantities?
  5. The current list. Please let me know if I have left you off by mistake hillvalley babka +1 hjshorter (maybe +1) mdt +1 bilrus Al Dente busboy +1 malawry hannah +1 turtleboy eunny jang DC Mark +1 If y'all want a cheat sheet on each other, I can put one together but I need advance warning.
  6. I finally made it out today. It's amazing that I didn't get lost since the signage is not great. First, a Sunday trick. If you are not a church-goer, and must go on a Sunday, get there before noonish. I arrived at noon to find the lot about 2/3 full. When I left 2 hours later there were a few empty spots way in the back. Either everyone in Virginia dresses up on Sunday, or a lot of people head to Wegmans after church. Frankly, not that impressed. But I think that's because I live in DC and enjoy going to multiple markets. If I lived out there, I would be thrilled. I agree with previous comments that they clearly aren't targeting higher end or gourmet food. I found their international section lacking and oddly organized. There was a mango juice from Egypt in the S. American section. The Italian and French sections were disappointing. Not a lot of product, and nothing I couldn't find elsewhere. Seperating the French and Spanish section was Regional America, which mainly consists of the Sylvia line of soul food products. The organic section was what you expect, although the prices for many items were the same as the nonorganic produce. There were two things I went shopping for and neither was there. I am sad to report that Wegmans does not carry peanut butter slices. They also don't carry a drink that I love called Aqualibra. But the did have pink Hostess snowballs. My other problem was there were a lot of complimentry displays that were hidden. For instance, around the corner from the sushi bar is a small display of soy sauce, nori, gari, wasabi, etc. But because it was dark and overshadowed by the side of the sushi case, I didn't see it the first time around. That happened all over the store. So who'll admitt to stopping at the BK?
  7. I want to teach in Japan I wonder how feasible it would be to run a lunch service like this in a US school. If it was cost efficient I could see a charter or private school trying it. Do the schools receive any funding from the government?
  8. Top with sprinkles or Add mini chocolate chips or Dip half in chocolate and top with sprinkles or Do the last two with caramel chips I love the chocolate covered popcorn and marshmellow ideas . If there is a microwave: tea bags and hot chocolate
  9. What does it taste like?
  10. Malawry is absolutely right. I can't afford any of this. Picnics I can afford Should I start a seperate thread?
  11. Excellent topic Matzah balls golf ball sized, light and fluffy. With luction (thin, long noodles). Carrotts and onions a must, parsnips optional. Lots of ground pepper on top. Made by grandma. Eaten with a plastic Asian soup spoon so my tounge doesn't burn.
  12. Tomorrow AM. Break of dawn. You got it. Goodnight! Thank you!!! Good night
  13. Ohhhhhhhhh. My mouth is watering. The photos are beautiful. What kind of camera are you using? I know this is strange, but can I put in a request? I would love to see a real coissant again. It has been way too long and with the euro killing the dollar, it will be a while
  14. As often as we want I'm sorry you can't join us this time, but we will start the peer pressure when our next gathering is planned. We really should do a get together where we can show off our culinary skills, or lack there of. Maybe a picnic at Wolf Trap? You are such a scene-stealing b****! Mrs. B and I were going to propose a picnic in Rock Creek Park at the dinner next week, for late June or July, with the idea that people could show off their cooking, bring their kids, and not have to spend a boatload of money. Wolf Trap would be great, and I'd be interested in exploring it, but there are significant expense and logistical (not to mention musical taste) concerns. Nah, just a control freak I thought the Gipsy Kingswould be a good option. I really like the idea of Carter Barron, but someone would have to get the tickets. Depending on the date I might be available to stand in line.

  16. Yep, we're all jealous Count me in for the show, as long it is behind the camera
  17. I can go either way, although I am looking forward to guidance from babka's friend. Maybe we could do a few dishes off menu?

  19. As your fearful leader I am making an executive decision Thursday the 22nd @ 7 it is. So far we definately have: hillvalley babka hjshorter (maybe +1) mdt +1 bilrus Al Dente busboy There are a number of you who I left off 'cause I haven't heard from you yet or you committed more that 72 hours ago (and I'm afraid we've scared you off by now ).
  20. I didn't get foie gras soup Brunch sounds like a great idea, but you get to organize
  21. I am sure the park has some official name, but that's what we always called it
  22. Sorry for all the confusion. The kids came back from recess while I was typing. Now you know why I don't post that much at work It is Thursday, April 22nd. For now. Unless we move it to the 29th so that babka and her friend can join us.
  23. I know, I know, but the relatives wanted to see Chinatown and after spending the day at the zoo they were too tired to walk. I don't know about the rest of you, but I would love to schedule a time so babka and her friend could come. It would make ordering much easier. Communication can get interesting at Full Kee. I would also want the oyster caserole on the menu Right now the date is THURSDAY, April 22nd. Should we push it up a week? Please PM me if you are coming. I have lost track of the count, and have gotten a lot of maybes.
  24. The 7th st. Safeway is the UnSafeway. Busboy, which quadrent was the 9th & G in? I know I could look at a map, but I am at work and too lazy I know it's not SE, 'cause that's the block I grew up on. The Soviet Safeway I was remember was on 17th, I think. They called it that because the selection was so lousy. Anyone remembe Weisfelds on the Hill (I am sure I am spelling it worng)? On 5th, across from Turtle Park. He was a great butcher. Best part about working in Rockville is the food shopping selection. Between Trader Joes, Lotte and Katz I can do pretty well.
  25. We really need to do an egullet mini bar event
