  1. I agree with most everyone here. While I do tend to get my money's worth at a buffet (especially one with sushi), I EAT all I take. When I was a busboy back in the day, I admit to getting peeved when I saw all the food that was left on a plate, because I think of all the people that have much, much, much less than what do we have. Sometimes, engaged in conversation about where to find the best food, etc. my mind is overcome with the fact that a huge percentage has to worry about if they will have anything to eat that day at all. But, back to buffets...........I love buffets, and think the owner was perfectly justified in what he did. When you're low on cash, a buffet is the poor college student's best friend. What those people were doing was wasteful and fucked up, plain and simple.
  2. This made me think of an old Andy Rooney column where he met a guy that was going to sell black cigarettes, market them as upscale, and charge more for them. No difference other than the color. I'm sure this coffee is expensive, and if available here, people will probably be lining up to eat what is basically cat shit.
  3. Aioli Tabasco Soy Sauce Ponzu Most any Salsa Japanese Pickles Pepperoncini This one Thai garlic chili sauce, i forget exactly what it is. and........SALT!
  4. Since i'm not really hip to what's in or not, i don't know what to say i would like to be "in" again. but i know what i'd like to see out: any kind of "coulis" on something that isn't a desert (that's just me though, i don't think berries have any place except in dessert). foams also. yes, i realize they provide this and that experience, but if you need foam all that much, have a beer. eat actual food. every semi-upscale resto in central PA having the same dishes, basically. and yes, it is annoying seeing chipotles everywhere. another thing i never could stand, and i'm sure this will raise some hackles, small portions anywhere. i respect that the chef has some good artistic inspiration or whatnot, but i like to spend a bunch of money on more than a few morsals, good as they may be, and however intricate they drizzle little essences and crap around it.
  5. I found this about "Kennedy Fried Chicken": Afghani immigrants own almost all of these KFC knock-off franchises, many of which have bulletproof partitions and serve neighborhoods where this is a necessary precaution. I wonder if the ownership shows through in any of the dishes?
  6. As far as breakfast goes, my ideal breakfast would be scrapple, bacon, and scrambled eggs with tabasco sauce, as well as toast, fresh-squeezed oj and lots of coffee. Here's a quote from Hunter S. Thompson about breakfast.
  7. As far as hottest food, i would definitely have to go with Thai, in Thailand. That stuff is hot as hell, but it's so good you can't stop eating it. Also, there was a little burger joint in my hometown that was inexplicably owned by a Thai and a Korean, that had a decent Thai menu. If you asked them to make it the way they would for a Thai, it was really, really hot but tasty as hell.
  8. awhile ago, i was broke and had really no food except for summer sausage. slices of that, with ketchup. also: ramen, crushed in the bag with the seasoning packet dumped in. totino's pizza rolls, microwaved. also, i rarely cooked canned soup. i eat it out of the can, with a spoon. this includes chef boyardee's offerings. cereal with a lot of sugar and no milk supermarket sushi vienna sausages the worst, in my opinion is a convenience store hoagie. crappy, smelly onions, sickly meat, soggy lettuce, clear tomatos, and soggy bread. you smell like nasty-ass onions until you take a shower. hard is it may be to believe, i actually like good food also.
  9. 1.Uni 2.Tobiko 3.Scallop actually, there isn't a kind i don't like, except shrimp perhaps, and it's not that i don't like it, i'd rather eat something different if i'm at a sushi joint.
  10. I haven't been back to my hometown lately, but usually my mom gets me a care package of cheddar cheese, tomatos, yogurt, cottage cheese, and sour cream from the local farmer's market. Most are Amish produced, rich and fresh and hell.
  11. where i come from, a snakebite is a shot of yukon jack with lemon.
  12. If anyone's caught Chapelle's show last week, It portrayed Arsenio Hall at a wine and cheese party, going "Why didn't you tell me how good this cheese was, motherfucker?!? He then knocks two people out.
  13. If you're looking for egg bagels, you can find them at Burkholder's Country Market, off route 45 in Millheim, PA. It's a little grocery store owned by Mennonites. I was a bagger there in high school.

    Fondues

Notwithstanding all the arguments of what's daft and what's naff, I'm of the persuasion that anything involving a pot of hot melted cheese is worth eating. But maybe I'm just daft.

Jinmyo, Are these daily (incredible) descriptions of dishes your regular at-home fare? If so, WOW! That rocks!
  16. when japanese eat "burdock" root, is this burdock plant the same as the one that has the spiny balls growing on it that stick to your clothes, or is it a different variety?
  17. as far as canadian commericials go, that one for some kind of bread with the three brothers that sing that annoying song that goes "together!" i remember it really getting on my nerves over the summer. this was in montreal.
  18. When i was there in the summers, i used to go into wherever, and language barrier aside, i found a lot of great and cheap noodles, sushi, etc. also i'd hit up the convenience stores when i was desperate.
  19. thanks for all the replies, i can't wait to try to make it.
  20. lol i just like to say i was "foraging", you see some weird stuff in PA forests though.
  21. yeah the only time i can drink that "malt beverage" crap like smirnoff ice is like in the morning, hopefully it has vitamin c. coors light is another morning beer. actually, any beer is good in the morning, come to think of it.
  22. Tomato Juice is great when the dog gets sprayed by a skunk. Also, rags soaked in vinegar help against tear gas.
  23. usually, i like to rip off a chunk of birch and chew on that. morels, puffballs, and mushrooms like that are good also. wild onions, wild raspberries, are all great. i'd be interested to hear about what you guys find when you're hiking about.
  24. A few years ago, i was about 15 and traveled around Asia with my dad, who lived in Japan. Our travels took us to Hong Kong, where i had this awesome dish of what i think was spinach, it was crispy and almost melted in your mouth, it was so unbelievably good. it wasn't really greasy at all. I since tried to sample a variety in montreal, and found it too sweet, but the right texture. If i could make this, i'd eat it every day. anyone have any ideas on what i made and how to recreate? i haven't found any recipes online. thanks!
  25. i don't know what the big deal was, i visited syndney a while ago and there was vegimite with breakfast, i slathered it on as i am apt to do and liked it fine. bit odd, but good nonetheless, perhaps it's because i like everything except milk and water chestnuts. I am american, also, born in montreal though. Dan
