I didn't know about Whippets before! Weird, I checked the box on these things and 2 of them said "Made in Canada". I was so ashamed. Hahahahahaha 🙂 Edited to add: I did know about Whippets, my brother (as a kid) loved them and I thought they were disgusting. But when you said the raspberry splotch, it reminded me!!!!!

No! No! No! Stop it! The bad ideas topic!

Whippet - the Canadian version of the Mallowmar - my favourite had the raspberry splotch. -
The Whippet looks like a Mallowmar... I used to love those as a kid.... but not in pink! https://www.snackworks.com/brands/mallomars/

I hate to trouble you to do that. I checked using my UPS portal (through work) and all they asked was where it was being shipped from - they didn't care where it was originally manufactured. According to my UPS portal, they said that at a value of $300, it was considered "duty type: 09, low value" and had no duty applied.
-
If @KennethT would like, i can call Customs Monday to find out what the duty, if any, would be.
-
The tariff rules have been changing by the week here lately. A month ago, China had over a 100% duty, now it's like 30%. As far as I know, the tariff has been converted since it was already imported into Canada. So the origin is now Canada - it shouldn't matter where it was originally made - it is being shipped from Canada to the US. When I used my UPS portal, they just wanted to know where it was shipping from to calculate duty, they didn't ask where it was actually made. And my UPS portal told me that (when using a cost of $300) that there was no duty as it had too low of a value. The only time it matters where it was made is if it isn't actually being imported into Canada yet - if it's being shipped to the US via Canada, but doesn't stop and go through customs in Canada and actually enter Canada. But if it's being purchased in a Canadian store, then it has been converted, so the country of origin would be Canada, as far as I know.
-
It is made in China.
-
I tried China just to see what it said and it gave me a big warning that pre-manufactured products imported to the US but made in China may be subject to very high tariffs and I should consider using Canada Post. But I think the same tariffs could apply, they would just be charged after rather than upfront, maybe? Using Vietnam gave no such warning. 🙂

I very much doubt if it would include residential pick-up. And even drop off is not that easy in our little town, no real UPS office only a drop-off at The Laundry (laundromat, ha). And they have very limited hours. And from prior experience, they never answer their phone! Those were 'quick quote' rates up above. If I want the actual final quote I have to complete some Customs/Export information, including where the oven was manufactured. @ElsieD, do you see that info anywhere because I am not seeing it online! 🙂 And that's the other concern, @KennethT - customs, duty, tariffs, etc. No idea of what would happen with that. 😒

Ewww to the Barbie food and licking a battery? Who does that? and why? -
Holy cow!!! That netParcel gets a much better discount than I can get! Are those prices (not including #1 which is drop-off only) including pickup from you?

I checked netParcel, which is kind of a shipping brokerage site I have used a couple of times. It gave me these options. If it's correct, shipping amounts are similar to what @ElsieD found, even from here in BC! (There were a bunch of other options but the price increases rather rapidly on them!) They list the regular price and the discounted online price both. Service Business Days Retail Price Your Price 1 Ground U.S. Drop-off Only 6 days $254.01 CAD $84.41 Select 2 Standard 6 days CAD $234.99 CAD $90.55 Select 3 Worldwide Expedited 3 days CAD $472.53 CAD $105.85 Select 4 Three-Day Select 4 days CAD $415.31 CAD $123.98 Select 5 Expedited Parcel USA 7 days $142.00 CAD $141.00 Select 6 Economy Select 5 days $517.72 CAD $166.19 Select 7 Worldwide Express Saver 2 days CAD $723.83 CAD $177.87 Select 8 Ground 7 days $203.64 CAD $186.91 Select 9 Xpresspost USA 6 days $209.35 CAD $209.02

Yes, shipping from Canada is expensive. Shipping from Vancouver to me in NY would be about US$250 - using dimensions of 25x21x20 and 30 pounds. Because of the size, UPS used the dimensional weight rather than the um, weight weight.
-
Posted Tuesday at 01:18 PM Just for a lark I went to the UPS site to get some idea of shipping costs. My CSO 500 was 16.5" x 22.25" x 17.5 weighing 27.14 lbs., going to Boston to a zip code of 02108. Size and weight were taken from the Costco web site but I don't know for sure if those are the measurements of the box or the unit. But, I figured those who are lusting for one might appreciate some idea of what they would pay for shipping. UPS tells me that would be $95.15 Cdn. $.
-
Thank you so much. I can check the shipping costs either once I get to work on Monday morning or if I figure out how to do it from home this evening. I will keep you posted. As for if I had a choice, I would take the new 500C. I'll get back to you soon!

My sis and BIL were here to help with packing/moving some things. They brought me overly ripe home grown tomatoes--the heat and extreme rain we had in a short period of time got them splitting quickly. I'd planned to have a bowl of soup that a friend had brought me, but the weather was so stinking hot and humid that after working all day, I only wanted something cold. Had some tomato, couple of zesty dill spears and giardineira (Why can't I ever spell it right?). It was perfect--cold and light. My friend also brought some banana bread that has Heath bar and chocolate chips, but I'll have it in a bit if I can cool down enough after a shower. And need to peel and chop the other tomatoes to use in a pasta sauce because they are too far gone to slice.
-
Saw these in a local grocery the other day. Pink Barbie food does not appeal to me at all, I have to say!!!
-
So here's an interesting detail. I now see the original CSO 300 also available on Costco Canada. @KennethT, if you had a choice, which one would you prefer? https://www.costco.ca/.product.1178104.html
-
I would consider it, but it makes more sense for someone closer to NY to do it. I have no idea of what the shipping costs would be but I'm sure they would be less from central/eastern Canada than from here on the extreme west coast. 🙂 Edited to add: But I will purchase it and ship it to you if it makes sense to do so! Are you able to check shipping costs?
-
Just a final update, the seller already wrote back to me and told me to initiate a refund request through Ebay and they will completely refund the purchase including the shipping cost, and that I should just dispose of the oven or try to find someone to fix it - they don't want me to bother returning it to them since it doesn't work anyway. So I'm very happy with this Ebay seller and would certainly buy from them again. So, on to the topic.... sigh.... unless an enterprising Canadian would consider shipping a CSO 500 to me here in NY... hehe... I can pay by Zelle or wire transfer and can throw in a bit extra for the trouble, and I have a UPS account to ship with - I can send a call tag so UPS can pick up from them....

Since my issues here, I'm back in the market for a new steam oven. It seems like the rest of the 300s on Ebay are all used and I'd rather not get a used piece of kitchen equipment. I would jump at the 500 if I could get it, but unfortunately it's unavailable in the US.... so I've been looking at this one from Panasonic: https://shop.panasonic.com/products/homechef-7-in-1-steam-multi-oven-0-7-cu-ft?_pos=1&_psq=sc180&_ss=e&_v=1.0 It's significantly underpowered compared to the CSO 300 and loses an inch in the depth. BUT, it comes with 2 racks and 2 pans which would be convenient at times. It also has a "ferment" setting which could be interesting.

This was a first try - came out really good, I don't know if I would change it - it came out very similar to what we had recently in various places in Jakarta. Makes 3-4 servings for 2 people - 250g Indonesian red keriting chillies (I grow these) if you don't have access to these, you can substitute the same quantity of large red spur chillies plus a few Thai chillies - 1 large US/European shallot or 3 small asian shallots - 3 cloves garlic - 1 red plum tomato (hard and not that ripe) - 3 kaffir lime leaves seasoning: - juice of about 1/3 of a US lime - 1/2 t MSG - 1/3 t chicken or mushroom powder - 1 t salt 1. Grind the chillies, shallot and garlic together to a rough paste 2. Grind the tomato separately 3. Heat a wok with about 1/4C of neutral oil and fry the chilli paste over moderate heat until softened and fragrant, stirring constantly 4. Add the lime leaves and ground tomato 5. Fry, stirring constantly, until the oil seeps back out of the mixture 6. Season, to taste

When I went to my butcher this morning to get my weekend fill of Mett, he had three veal shanks on display. Of course I had to get one, gave it a Marcella Hazan-ish treatment (EVO & butter, onion, garlic, anchovy, white wine) and braised it for around 4.5h … Cooks treat: bone marrow on toast with a sprinkle of salt & parsley - just sooo good 🤗 Great texture on the shank - tender, with just the slightest resistance to the bite. Served with creamy polenta and wilted spinach with almonds and raisins. And the strained braising juices, reduced and finished with a touch of butter. No complaints indeed 🥳
-
Yes, 40gr for 1 day or 12gr for 24hr in the frig.
-
Hey, I cite that guy frequently, too 🥳
