Can anyone suggest a good restaurant in Gettysburg or environs? Not too touristy? Price is not an object, and we will eat just about any style or cuisine.

Thanks very much.

one of my favorite restaurants in that area is a german place in abbottstown (a few miles outside gettysburg) called the hofbrauhaus. it's not very glamorous, but they do have a decent selection of german beers and they make a mean potato dumpling. if you like german food, i'd recommend it.

The best place around is Sidney in East Berlin. Nothing in the area approaches it in terms of creativity and quality of ingredients. Few tourists find there way to the place either.

Another choice is the Herr Tavern, a few miles west on Rte 30. I can't vouch for it but a friend speaks highly of the place. You are more likely to see the tourist crowd there, though.

Gettysburg doesn't have much good food, like many tourist towns. I second the recommendations for Sydney and Herr Tavern. If you want a quick lunch, you might go to the Dobbin House on Steinwehr Ave. It is the old stone building. Lunch in the Springhouse Tavern in the cellar. The food is fine, but the atmosphere is the main thing. Ask to be shown the Underground Railroad hiding place.

At a shopping center on West St, there is a nice little Mexican place -- can't remember the name, but get someone to tell you how to get to the center with the Medicine Shoppe and Dollar General and you'll see it.

At The Yellow Canary on Chambersburg St. (G-burg's one and only gourmet store!), you can get picnic fixings and eat on the battlefield.

By chance I happened to be at Hofbrauhaus a few weeks ago. The beer is good...the food and atmosphere are a bit blah.

Cross the border into Emmitsburg Maryland on Rt15 and there's Chubby's BBQ. The owner is a bit problematic (not for me however I understand why), but the food is pretty well thought of.
