We at long last got a group over to Kuk-il, an all you can eat korean BBQ restaurant off Roosevelt Blvd.

A good time was had by all. Sadly, Philadining was ill and we just couldn't capture the same photographic magic without him. Nonetheless, picture the experience - meat meat meat meat and more meat cooked over smoky real chacoal grills. Some really good variety. Having Mrbigjas and Capaneus beside me, I ventured into tripe and pork belly territory. I will save the gizzard experience for another round although they seemed to go over pretty big at our end of the long table.

Lets see, at the buffet table were choices of straight short rib, marinated short rib, marinated pork, chicken, squid, tripe, gizzard and pork belly.

Between that, the soup, rice and dipping into mrbigjas' very own bottle of soju, I bowed out early on amidst quiet heckles- of course rebounding for a trek over to Capogiro. How can you not? I would risk excommunication from the club over that.

Once again, a grand old time with the gulleteers. I got to meet new people too and that's always a plus. Not to mention it's pretty good cheap eats. $12.50 plus tax and tip.

actually i ordered the bottle of soju for anyone who wanted it, but for some reason people weren't enamored of the concept of something that's kind of like half-strength bad vodka (uh, in a good way).

gizzards are good. they're squeaky on your teeth, and they cut them up so you can actually chew them. tripe takes really well to korean seasoning, i've found. it's a little chewy but it works somehow.

it's a fun place--light on the banchan, but accommodating in other ways. and old school with the grills: most places now, even if they have charcoal anymore (a lot don't) have a gas hookup to get the charcoal started. but kuk-il still gets the charcoal lit and carries it to your table in a bucket. and no powered vents either--just a 70s-fireplace-esque chimney kind of setup.

if you can get up there, enjoy! it's a fun place and cheap as all getout.

Your hands will smell of Bbq for at least a day... and allllll that protein will take a couple of days to make its way out of your system....

Great place nonetheless!!!

Meat, yum! Something really nice and primal about meat cooking on an open flame. Everything was good, but I think my favs were the gizzards (I'm a big fan), short ribs, and pork belly. Along with a tea that smelled but did not taste like warm beer, we also got the usual condiments, a small bowl of miso soup, and an endless supply of rice. Really good deal.

I didn't try the sojou since the comments from my end of the table such as "it smells like rubbing alcohol" and "tastes like it too" turned me off just a wee bit.

It was nice finally putting an actual face on those eGers I haven’t met before as well as seeing familiar faces.

Thanks, shacke for putting this all together.

More like - be a smoky person until well washed.

Was it worth it? Absolutely!

i took a couple pics of evan and pedro, but they didn't come out very well. the place has great shabby late 60s-early 70s ski decor that stephen starr would be highly jealous of, but really it's not much to look at. it's got a few things going for it, but mainly it's really cheap, and they actually bring out buckets of charcoal to cook on, rather than gas. other than that, it looks like korean bbq, yo--pieces of meat on a grill, a few banchan, some rice in a metal bowl.

Where are the pictures? Was there a backup camera-person?

yeah..... you.

Make-up binge for some who couldn't make the first extravaganza:

This was somewhere around the fifth heap of meat of what seemed like about 25...

Good marinades, a nice variety of meat, the flavor and heat of real charcoal make a big difference.

Never hurts to add some Charm

The place itself is a bit worn-looking, but the food is good and fresh, tasty, and CHEAP. Thanks to Shacke for getting this together, again!

 Damn! That looks soooooo good! So sorry I missed this. I completely spaced out on having Passover preparations for 26 people and have been dutifully spinning nuts and fruit through my food processor all evening as well as watching the new updated Ten Commandments whilst doing it. (Sidenote - this guy could definitely pry the staff out of Charlton Heston's cold dead hand) Looks like much fun was had and the food looks delicious! I'll have to go back here another time. Maybe I'll take the niece and nephew. They'd love the idea of barbequeing right at the table.
