Jon and I went to Filene's yesterday. They still have a fair amount of good stuff. Kitchen Aid Pro 600's 30% off, some AllClad, a fair amount of Simply Calphalon deeply discounted (I think 60% off, but am not positive). Also FoodSavers at 30% off for those of you who cook sous vide.

This news story about the Maine Mall Filene's closure indicates that it's not just clearance stores that are closing, but also regular mall-anchor department stores. It appears it's a part of the action following the purchase of May Co., parent of the Filene's chain, by Federated Department Stores, owners of Macy's. Federated's strategy for merging Filene's into their holdings seems to include closing Filene's branches in malls that already have a Macy's branch.

Yikes. I hope that doesn't bode ill for the Filene's flagship store in Boston--there's a Macy's right down the street from it!

All Filene's stores are going out of business, including the one at Downtown Crossing, across the street from Macy's. Somehow, the Filene's Basement stores are under separate ownership, so will remain in business. I work down the street from the Downtown Crossing store, and plastered all over the Basement store are signs noting that they will remain open. Upstairs, everything is on clearance. The kitchen section isn't huge but there's still a lot in stock. There's talk of a Target and other stores moving in eventually, but who knows.
