I'm curious as to what some of the best options are in town for grabbing lunch at the bars of some of the finer establishments in town.

For instance, I'm a big fan of the bar menus at spots like Galileo and Poste, and they're friendly on the budget for those of us who make a measly government wage.

Stupid private sector with all their expense accounts!

But I digress. What are some of the favorite bar menus for the learned eGullet crowd?

I've heard good things about the bar lunch menus at Kinkeads and Citronelle.

I only wish I worked donwtown to be able to take advantage of these occasionally (or frequently).

Citronelle is no longer open for lunch. The lobster burgers are available in the bar in the evening.

the bar/cafe at palena is delicious and everything is 9 bucks plus you can also order anything off of the "normal" menu. service is phenomenal. cheese plate out of this world.

ive not been but the upstairs bar at bistro lepic in georgetown has received nice reviews from friends whove been. ditto that of galileo downtown. i know there's more....?

now i realize that you said lunch and palena is not open for lunch. nor is it downtown. ditto bistro lepic. in short, ignore this posting for lunches (but those dinners!!)

Do you have to eat at the bar when your order off the bar menu at most of these places, or are tables available (like the palena cafe)?

My bad. I still want to try it sometime.

vidalia also sprung to mine. they have a bar menu and you can order off the regular menu there. its very tasty sophistacated southern food. the wine list is astounding plus you can have flights of certain regions and also has the option of big or small (6oz or 3 oz i believe) pours. they are most definitely open for lunch.

Tom's review of Galileo's bar menu lists lunch hours only. I assume this means no bar menu for dinner...? Given the popularity of bar menus at Palena and such, I just wanted to be sure.

Oh yeahhhhh! Lunch at the bar at Kinkaids. Mmmmm. Every time I eat upstairs in that awful office space converted into a dining room (I swear a photocopier wouldn't look out of place) I wish I was at the intimate bar space downstairs getting good food hustled to me by wisecraking barmen. The squid with polenta sent me back to my kitchen for days to work out how to recreate it (add semolina to the corn meal) and the oysters, no surprise, are wonderful. Bliss.

Also, for haute barfood, you can't beat Johnny's Halfshell which I imagine was the inspiration for Palena's offering a top notch hotdog in a linen tablecloth-type setting (I know, I know, neither of them have linen tablecloths but you get the drift).

Johnny's rocks! (Not to be confused with Johnny Rockets).
