  1. It's a shame they keep raising their prices while making portions smaller. When Buck's first opened the prices were supposed to be lower than Greenwood, but now the prices are the same, if not exceeding Greenwood. That $38 steak used to be $29.50. I guess they're not hurting for business so they can get away with charging what they like, but prices are pushing it for a casual meal. It definitely has prevented me from going there as much, and I'm a big fan of Carole's cooking.
  2. That's interesting, I noticed the increase of avocado dishes at Oyamel on my last visit. They even said they're having Avocado Week the week of Cinco de Mayo. My friend tried a special dessert called Avocado Four Ways & had a look of ecstasy on her face, I've never seen her look like that!
  3. I would just like to say that the service at Murky Arlington is WILDLY inconsistent...you never know if you are going to get someone who knows how to make an espresso drink or not. My friend ordered a triple shot of espresso & was served a single shot, when he brought it up the barista insisted it was a triple (it definitely was not). I try to keep track of the baristas who know what they are doing, but everytime I go it seems to be different employees. Also half of the time they are out of chocolate for Mochas/Hot Chocolate. But the product is definitely better than what was served at Common Grounds.
  4. I would recommend Delhi Club for Indian, a block or 2 from Iota. I think the owner posts on egullet. The dishes are carefully prepared & reasonably priced. Kabob Bazaar is delicious Iranian food, very casual and inexpensive, also within walking distance of Iota. The food at Iota is actually not bad. I'm not a fan of Boulevard Woodgrill or Whitlow's. BTW Tallula is less than a mile away from Iota, just up Washington Blvd.
  5. I'm sure they'll add you if you send a request to coloradokitchen@aol.com The email updates are sent from that address.
  6. Tom awards a single star
  7. Read on the other board that Amernick is closing & there are only two days left of operation. Does anyone have more info? Very sad if true!
  8. Anyone remember The Eleven? That was the shit.
  9. That's my hope. The menu that I was mailed a month or so ago didn't wow me, but it also looked as though it had been worded by a Smithsonian staffer rather than someone on the food side ("Red and white wines"). ← I will also be attending the Keller/Richard dinner tonight at Citronelle. I agree that the menu they sent a few months ago didn't look so great, but we shall see!
  10. Their cupcakes are pretty bad, I think the owner needs to spend more time on perfecting his craft & less time on marketing, but hey he seems to be doing well. If you're going to spend that much on a cake, I agree that Amernick is a better option.
  11. I think Two Amys received 3 stars previously in his book (Paradiso might've as well, I don't have a copy right now in front of me). Huong Que previously received 3 stars, downgraded now to 2. Buck's definitely deserves their 3 stars, every meal I've had there has been fabulous and it's less expensive than Nectar & Palena (backroom).
  12. Surprised no one has mentioned Taqueria El Charrito Caminante in Arlington...Their burritos easily blow away all the chains mentioned.
  13. that steak story is hilarious - carole's steaks are huge!

    daSto

Chef came across fine in the article, and she hit the nail on the head with this one: "White people think they're supposed to have this reaction in defense of the black community," the chef says. "But the people who say 'da sto' don't see anything wrong with that. And the white people who criticize this are saying that there is something bad about saying it that way." And it's ridiculous to criticize her for "playing the race card" when race obviously plays a large part in people's perceptions, whether they realize it or not.
  15. Some more CK-related questions: Could you explain why you had initially decided not to have a liquor license, and the reasoning behind finally deciding to apply? Also, why is it that hamburgers are only available on Thursdays, Fridays & Sundays? I'm guessing there is a logistical reason for this, but I was never sure exactly what it was.
  16. Thanks for doing this chat Gillian, it is very interesting. Colorado Kitchen is one of my very favorite restaurants in DC. There are few chef-driven restaurants in this area that are as reasonably priced as Colorado Kitchen. Do you see yourself doing Colorado Kitchen long into the future, or do you have aspirations to open up other restaurants and try other things?
  17. I too was at Kinkead's at lunch yesterday. Thought the Clam Chowder good, mine also came with a hush puppy, while it was supposed to come with clam fritters (maybe the ran out?). I loved the soft-shell preparation, the tasso ham wasn't too salty for me. I wasn't quite as enamored with the soufflé, though I did enjoy it. Overall Kinkead's did a very nice job for RW.
  18. Went to Corduroy tonite, overall very enjoyable. For appetizers we had the Buffala Mozzarella Porcupine & lightly fried Soft-Shell crab w/wilted greens (+$5). For the entrees, we had a special of boneless filet of Blue Fish overtop "spicy" Tomatoes, and Buffalo Sirloin w/garlic mashed potatoes & beans(+$5). For desserts, the chocolate tart w/caramelized bananas & vanilla bean ice cream, and a trio of homemade ice creams (vanilla, peach & blueberry). The tart was very good, but the trio of ice creams were 3 small scoops w/3 berries, nothing that special. I think the desserts could use some work now that they took away the hazlenut bars...Who really wants another creme brulee? As has been stated, the whole menu is available, and the upcharges (on a couple items) are reasonable. Corduroy is usally known for being pretty quiet, but there was a LOUD group of ladies there tonite. They seemed to be having a good time. Oh & the service was very polite & we didn't drink wine (only beer), sometimes things were a little slow, but that's to be expected during RW.
  19. It's too bad to hear that about Equinox. My first RW experience at Equinox was great in 2002. Last year when I went, it definitely was not as impressive. It seems like they aren't trying as hard during RW as they once did. I'm going to Corduroy tonight. I did the notice last time I was there that the Hazlenut bars weren't on the menu, bummer.
  20. I was going to go to Vidalia for restaurant week, but am having second thoughts based on their posted RW menu. There is a surcharge for roughly half of the items on the menu, and in the end it looks like you only save a couple bucks in comparison with the prices posted on the regular menu, unless you make sure to order items with no surcharge. Also, the side items are more expensive, but perhaps they've raised their prices recently?. If I'm only gonna save a few bucks, I'd rather avoid the crowds & go during non-RW.
  21. Ask yourself how well they got out of the city and into the burbs and whether they seem as knowledgeable as Eve or Tom or Todd? Well, they did write up places like China Star & El Tapatio before either Sietsema or Kliman got to 'em. But certain things are a little odd on their best of lists...For instance, it seemed like only 5 restaurants were photgraphed repeatedly for the cheap eats list. It seemed strange & a bit confusing that they weren't necessarily featuring photos of the restaurants being reviewed next to the writeup, they just kept using pics of Mexicali Blues & a few others, on every page.

    Palena

FYI I don't think they're doing panini & doughnut night anymore (at least last night they weren't). Did anyone try it while it lasted? Instead, last night I had the bacon, & a galantine of guinea hen & foie gras that was quite tasty.
