Choosing pot size for saucepan

Which size do you think would be the most versatile for a saucepan? When I read those hints about kitchen equipment, they mention getting two different saucepans-one small one and a larger one. But, would it be possible to just buy one saucepan that could handle the duties of both the smaller and larger saucepan?
