  1. I'm going to concoct today. For the first time, I have a smoked turkey carcass to use. I've got some white beans soaking. I have some chard and kale, I think. I've got sweet potatoes. Not sure if all that works and I can't figure out spices/herbs to season it. All thoughts welcome.

It's been a while since I've posted here. I've been really sick with a nasty cough, congestion and weirdly plugged up ears for the last month.

I just put the turkey back in the freezer. Not doing it this year. I have no energy and I don't want to make anyone else sick (although I think they already are).

    We will try for Christmas.

Hope you feel better soon. Please see the doctor if you haven't.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, I may have an additional 2-4 people at the table. My idea of making a second turkey (roulade) is looking pretty genius right now. The bigger issue is finding sufficient cutlery and dishes. Not to mention chairs (Mom has some nice padded folding chairs I can borrow).

The year we got married (on Nov. 17), we also hosted Thanksgiving at our small townhouse in San Juan Capistrano. There were several of my in-laws in town for the wedding still, so they were there. Then at the last minute, one of the nephews who was in the USN in San Diego called to ask if he could bring a couple of buddies and join us. Sure!. I was running around the complex to borrow chairs, plates, etc. It was a grand time and we got everyone crammed in. Probably the largest sit down dinner we ever hosted. I was in such a flurry about all the logistics, I couldn't even tell you how the food was, but I'd guess with several sailors there we didn't have any leftovers!

I keep a few Rubbermaid totes in the trunk of my car, put them in my cart and just toss the items in as I scan them.

I love those Rubbermaid totes. I bought 3 of them at Costco decades ago, then decided I wanted more. Had to get them online and they'd gotten a lot more expensive. but they are sturdy and perfect for putting groceries in.

The brioche toasts were back in stock at my TJ's this morning.  $1.99/box.  The packaging looks the same as always.

Hooray!! I break them into 2-3 pieces and use them as croutons. Yum !! I was so sad when they didn't have them on my last visit to TJ's.

  6. I threw together a little soup for supper last night to use the rest of a half turkey breast I'd roasted last week. Turkey, aromatics, carrot, Trader Joe's Harvest Grains and ladled over chopped fresh spinach in the bowls.

  7. Yesterday was our 39th anniversary. Since my husband's dementia has gotten so bad, he often doesn't know I am his wife and certainly did not understand that it was our anniversary. A rather sad day for me.

It cheered me immensely when the doorbell rang. It was our neighbors' daughter who started a bakery business in her apartment during the pandemic when her college classes were all messed up. She has absolutely killed it with her fabulous baked goods in this area. She now rents a commercial kitchen space and two local coffee shops carry her pastries. Anyway, my beloved sister ordered some pastries to help get me through the day and it was Kirin delivering them.

@Maison Rustique, there is an RG Bean Club subscription LIGHT. I get fewer beans (probably miss some great varieties), but my cabinet is less full!

Yeah,, I already switched to that. With only 2 of us and my husband so ill now, he barely eats and I barely eat because I'm on the stress diet. We just can't keep up with it. I've donated way more than I've used in the last couple of years.

  9. I am planning Thanksgiving foods and decided to try something last night, I roasted Brussels sprouts and carrots with fresh rosemary, then drizzled with some sorghum (syrup) a few minutes before taking it out of the oven. Really delicious, though I'd like to see a little spice with it. Definitely has potential for the holiday meal.

This afternoon I presented a grateful colleague with seven pounds of Rancho Gordo beans.  And in return I now have another square foot or two of floorspace in my dining room.

I've been doing that a lot lately, too. It might be time to stop my subsscription, as sad as that makes me.

Yes I'm a fan! Of the syrup, that is. My first taste was "sorghum butter" served with bread at a restaurant in Tennessee. It  was just sorghum mixed into butter. We eat a lot of biscuits in our house, and I keep the sorghum in a squeeze bottle within arm's reach of a biscuit, whether the biscuit is fresh out of the oven or toasted the next day. I like it in hot cereal too and sometimes on pancakes when I don't feel like maple flavor. Doesn't taste like anything else, I don't think. I don't cook with it but I imagine it would work well along with other sweeteners in a pecan pie.

I am also a big fan of Steen's cane syrup, which is less sweet than sorghum and more mellow than molasses. That works in pecan pie, granola, etc. Also on biscuits!

I need to make up some sorghum butter and make some biscuits! Or pancakes! Now I'm hungry!! I have heard of Steen's but have not had it. I'll check it out. Am sure I can order online if I can't find it locally,

  12. I have a milkman (I'm not being sexist, that is what the company calls them.) from a local dairy. They offer a lot more than milk products and last week they had sorghum. Growing up, I recall my Dad loved it. I can't really remember what Mom made with it, but she likely substituted it for any recipe that called for molasses or served it with hot biscuits and butter. So, with that memory of my Dad, I had to order a jar.

Now I'm trying to figure out how I will use it. I found this recipe for Pecan Cobbler that sounds pretty darned good, but haven't made it yet. I saw a recipe using it in a brine for chicken that seemed interesting and I could also see it to make a glaze for ham.

    Any sorghum fans here?

  13. I have a Breadman Ultimate that I've had for probably 30 years. It looks similar to  he Zojirushi posted here, but am sure there are major differences in the works since it is so old. I do occasionally bake in it, but mainly use it for the mixing and kneading and rising until time to shape. I have a Kitchen Aid mixer but have not used it for kneading. I should give it a try sometime.
