  1. I ordered this from my milkman. I honestly do not like this pizza but it was convenient so I got it and had a couple of small pieces of it last night. Shakespeare's is in Columbia, MO, home of MU. All my MU alumni friends/family love this pizza and I can only attribute it to good times getting drunk there because I find little to like about it--the meats on it are tasty, but the rest not. My sis was crying when I told her I got it. They are coming to help me this weekend--I'll save the leftovers for her. I only got it because I didn't want to go pick up a pizza somewhere and the only other pizza the milkman has is a cracker crust type thing that is even worse than this.

  2. Lovely evening at friends' last night. They served a delicious Roman Cacciatore with Potatoes (link to recipe follows), some sliced tomato I harvested at my sister's last week and nice Bourgogne Blanc to go with.

And my friend Dave also sent me home with a container of chili he made yesterday. Yum!

  3. Spinach, home-grown tomato, onion, blue cheese, pepitas. We have a bit of a heat wave going again now that it is autumn, so I am using all these tomatoes and thinking light.

  4. Just realized why I love potatoes so much. They are perfect vehicles for my 2 favorite food groups: fat and salt.

Supper is a baked potato with butter, onion, sour cream and shredded cheese. Yum!

  5. Shaun Brady was a beloved KC chef and member of the Irish community here. Last year, he was gunned down by teens when he attempted to stop the theft of his car outside his restaurant. The city is still mourning his loss and a cookbook celebrating his life was recently published to help aid his family.

I never met him, but my dear friend Dave Eckert (a food/wine journalist) wrote about him often and they were good friends. During the last couple of years that my husband was still alive and living here, he unbeknownst to me blew through most of our money (dementia will do that). I was truly fearful that we would be homeless. Dave and his wife fed us/me for much of that dreadful insecure time. (I'm now recovered thanks to long-term care insurance and life insurance.) Every time Dave would go see Shaun, Shaun would send me food--and always his delicious scones.

My copy of this book arrived yesterday.

Thanks for sharing that, @Maison Rustique, especially the photo. When you posted about your gift, I was very curious to understand the difference between a “meal” and a tin of seasoned fish!

She said when she brought them that she'd gotten them for her lunches at work and really liked them but had been eating them for a while and was getting tired of them. I've got 2 more to try--one is tuna and another salmon. I think the tuna is provencal or nicoise and the salmon is Moroccan.

  7. I posted in the gift thread a while back about some tinned fish meals my sister had given me. I finally had one. This was delicious. I had it over a bed of spinach and home-grown tomato generously sprinkled with Omnivore Limone salt blend. If you are a hearty eater, you would likely want something else with it, but I am not, so this was a perfect meal for me.

Look for more tomato meals. I am making trips to Topeka to tend to my sis and BIL's cat and garden while they are traveling. I picked a lot of tomatoes today but there are tons that will be ripe later this week. And so many green ones! I texted my sis that they are going to be harvesting tomatoes into December at the rate these are producing!

  8. I found numerous threads about stand mixers, so picked this one at random. I've had a Kitchen Aid for quite a while but it got buried and not used in a long time. Determined to change that after the move, I dug it out yesterday to pack and take to the new place. OMG!! It either gained weight or I got weaker because I did not remember it being so heavy! I hope the bottom of the box doesn't fall out.

I have ordered some of the mats that you put under appliances to make them easy to slide and hope that does the trick when I get it there and unpacked. I do not want to have to lift it again. My back!!

  9. @Smithy I had to laugh at your bacon cooking in advance. I did the very same a few days ago. I had a bag of the pre-cooked stuff in the fridge with the intention of making a sandwich (still have great tomatoes to use) and wound up eating most of it for breakfast with a couple of pieces of cheese yesterday. LOL. I'll have to cook more bacon for a sandwich.

Last night I pulled out my tenderloin & tots leftovers. I'd eaten  about 1/4 of the sandwich Thursday night. I took meat off the 1/4 piece, heated it and a few tots in the toaster oven and put the meat on a fresh bun. Was great. And now, I've got enough for 2 more meals!!! Yikes. I'll get tired of it before I ever finish it.

  10. No photos. Went to a local sports bar where an old friend tends bar. Had a couple of glasses of wine and a pork tenderloin sandwich with tots--all scratch made to order. Fatty, dreadfully unhealthy and delicious. And I have enough leftovers for 2 more meals.

  11. @Honkman, I wouldn't have thought of apples and beans together, but now that I've seen it, I can't wait to try it.

BST (spinach instead of lettuce) for me. Served with salt & vinegar chips.

  12. Fried some bacon to use in salads and sandwiches this week. Then fried some potato and onion to use with leftover smoked sausage in a frittata for supper. No photo of the finished frittata because my bad hands completely mangled it. Tasted fine just looked like a mess.

  13. My dear sis and BIL are going out of town week after next. I went over to Topeka yesterday afternoon to get the lay of the land so I'll be able to go a couple of time while they are gone to replenish cat food, bird food, water the garden, etc. Then we all drove back to Lawrence, KS for a quick bite to eat before I headed back home. None of us had been to Fork & Tumbler but it had popped up on Facebook so we decided to give it a try. The website and FB page looked really great. It was not all that. We shared some of the small plates, which turned out to be enormous. We had the Fried bread with whipped cheese, Meatballs, Stuffed Squash Blossoms & Brussels and Crab Cakes. The bread/cheese  and meatballs were good but everything really was just so-so. We won't be going back. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

We all have many leftovers. And I picked a few tomatoes at their house, so that's a good thing!!

My mother raised me that it’s rude to answer a question with another question.   So please forgive me.   But in the absence of a wet environment, like steaming, why would this be better than towels or a hot mitt?

I have a few pairs or glassblowing gloves and chemical clean up gloves I bought for such things.   Work better than stuff marketed to home cooks and cheaper too

For me, it is a matter of using it when you have a pan that is not easy to grip. If something doesn't have handles or you have a pan with no lip on it, it isn't easy to pull it forward and grab hold of it. At least not with arthritic hands.
