  1. It's just not airline food that can make you sick: "Why you should never order ice on a plane" Forewarned is fair warned.

  3. This was previously on sale (a few pages back) but thanks for posting it again for anyone who may missed it the first time around. There's another German recipes cookbook (click) I've been keeping my eye on but it doesn't seem to ever go on sale.
  4. I'm giving Mother's Cookies the side-eye this morning. I recently bought a package of their Taffy sandwich cookies. There was a blurb on the label stating "New Shape but with the same flavor" (or something to that effect). The new shapes are longer and the cookies tend to come apart a lot more easily. Then I noticed this morning that the Taffy package with the new cookie shape now contains 2 cookies less than they did before. At the same price. Really, Mother's? Did you think people wouldn't notice? Greedy corporate rat bastards. A pox on your house!
  5. @munchymom Thanks for taking one for the team!
  6. This morning's finds... From Bubby's in NYC, Chef Ron Silver's "Bubby's Brunch Cookbook: Recipes and Menus from New York's Favorite Comfort Food Restaurant" Kindle Edition $1.99US Michele Stuart's "Perfect Pies & More: All New Pies, Cookies, Bars, and Cakes from America's Pie-Baking Champion" Kindle Edition $1.99US James Beard Award-winning author Mindy Segal's "Cookie Love: More Than 60 Recipes and Techniques for Turning the Ordinary into the Extraordinary" Kindle Edition $1.99US You didn't hear it from me, but if you're interested in her Snickerdoodle recipe, you can see it using the "Look Inside" feature on the Amazon web page for the book. While not a true bargain price, I thought I would post this since it's a lower-than-normal price (and I think it's been previously posted, too): Peter Reinhart's "Bread Revolution: World-Class Baking with Sprouted and Whole Grains, Heirloom Flours, and Fresh Techniques" Kindle Edition $4.99US Tony Gemignani's "The Pizza Bible: The World's Favorite Pizza Styles, from Neapolitan, Deep-Dish, Wood-Fired,Sicilian, Calzones and Focaccia to New York, New Haven, Detroit, and more" Kindle Edition $1.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  7. Nutella riots? "Chaos spreads in France as Nutella-loving customers battle to get 70 percent off" Well, the price has been marked down a good bit...but to riot over that?
  8. The Taco Bell fries are here, with a good review: "Taco Bell is taking aim at McDonald's with $1 fries — and they're like nothing else in fast food" More 3 A.M. grub! Has anyone taken one for the team yet and tried them?
  9. Yes. This. If they're still in the dish when served, eat around them, set them aside, etc. My younger brother, who is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so to speak, ordered a Kung Pao dish during a family visit to a local Chinese food restaurant. He ate the chile peppers in the dish to prove his manliness and was sick for the next two days. Lesson learned.

    Caramelized onions

Can you provide your oven method/recipe? I usually do onions on the stove top. The oven method sounds like it'd be more hands-off.
  11. I think these have all been posted before in the past. Posting again because they're on sale. "Peter Reinhart's Whole Grain Breads: New Techniques, Extraordinary Flavor" Kindle Edition $2.99US Naoko Takei Moore's "Donabe: Classic and Modern Japanese Clay Pot Cooking" Kindle Edition $1.99US Rick Bayless' "Authentic Mexican: Regional Cooking from the Heart of Mexico" Kindle Edition $1.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  12. From this morning's BookBub email: Winner of the International Association of Culinary Association (IACP) Award- Oretta Zanini de Vita &‎ Maureen B. Fant's "Sauces & Shapes: Pasta the Italian Way" Kindle Edition $1.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  13. Currently snacking on Kroger brand Prime Rib & Horseradish potato chips. They're quite salty so I can't eat too many without feeling like I'm going to explode from the sodium. They remind me of the classic Snyder's of Hanover's Steak and Onion potato chips (which, alas, are no more). But that "Wow"-ness of the flavor lasts for only a short time before it wears off thanks to too much of a good thing. At least the bag will last me a while!
  14. TechBargains.com posted a morning special: Discount Mags is offering "Cook's Illustrated 1yr, 6 Issue Subscription $6.99". It's set to expire soon. There is a coupon code for checkout on Discount Mags: 37122 I tested this and if you go to Discount Mag's checkout and apply the code, the price is reduced to $6.99US. A pop-up asked me if I wanted to add another year of subscription for $6.00US. You can checkout as a guest so you shouldn't have to establish an account with the site. Please read any fine print. I am not sure what all the offer entails (auto renewal, etc). edited to add the web link
  15. I can't count the number of times our mom chastised us for grabbing a "tea towel" instead of a "hand towel" out of her towel drawer in the kitchen. Who knew there was a difference?
  16. My brother's Brussels Sprouts were overrun by aphids (in his community garden). He was able to rescue the plants after a strong watering followed by the application of some sort of oil on the leaves that aphids don't like (under the guidance of the community garden's Master Gardener).
  17. Today's finds: Jenn Louis's "The Book of Greens: A Cook's Compendium of 40 Varieties, from Arugula to Watercress, with More Than 175 Recipes" Kindle Edition $1.99US Andrea Nguyen's "Asian Tofu: Discover the Best, Make Your Own, and Cook It at Home" Kindle Edition $1.99US Charlotte Druckman's "Stir, Sizzle, Bake: Recipes for Your Cast-Iron Skillet" Kindle Edition $2.99US "Pickling and Preserving: The Foxfire Americana Library (3)" Kindle Edition $0.99US The related books that pop up with this entry are eyebrow-raising, to say the least. Still, they're supposed to be true Appalachian recipes. I am a US Prime member and the prices you see may vary.
  18. Paula Deen's "Not Yo' Mama's Banana Pudding" uses Pepperidge Farms Chessmen cookies. edited for spelling
  19. The Reuben Sandwich was a specialty sandwich that was around only for a limited time. It disappeared at the end of 2017. If it was a success for the company, it will be back. My mom had a hankering for the sandwich so my brother bought her one. She said she enjoyed it. My brother was upset with how much sodium was in the sandwich. C'est la sel!

    Aldi

@andiesenji Thanks for recommending Envy apples. I found them in my local Vons grocery store. They're wonderful! I usually stay away from red apples because I found too many were mushy/mealy. The Envy apples are anything but mushy/mealy. They have a wonderful sweet flavor and are amazingly crisp. As I was eating one, I though it may have been as crisp as an Asian Pear. I have a new appreciation for red apples since trying the Envy. Thanks again!
  21. The two pasta shapes on the opposite ends are completely new to me. I know different pasta shapes are used depending upon the sauce that it's being served with. The Capunti looks like pea pods and the Gigli look like sort of like frilly Calla Lilys. I guess I'm off down the Google rabbit hole to find out more about them. Thanks for posting the picture!
  22. Two by Yotam Ottolenghi... His first cookbook: Yotam Ottolenghi's "Ottolenghi: The Cookbook" Kindle Edition $2.99US Yotam Ottolenghi's "Jerusalem: A Cookbook" Kindle Edition $2.99US And this cookbook has been mentioned before...it's on sale again: Ronni Lundy and Johnny Autry's "Victuals: An Appalachian Journey, with Recipes" Kindle Edition $1.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  23. I guess I'm looking in the wrong place! Thanks...
  24. A different subject today: I enjoy Snickerdoodle cookies. My stupid question is why we don't see Snickerdoodle cookies for sale on the cookie aisle in our grocery stores? Too short of a shelf life?
  25. There hasn't been an official government recall but consumers are being warned: "Avoid Romaine Lettuce For Now, Consumer Reports Says"
