  1. Found this morning... Mary-Frances Heck's "Sweet Potatoes: Roasted, Loaded, Fried, and Made into Pie" Kindle Edition $1.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  2. I also thought that way in the past. The problem was I kept buying Brut Champagnes and they're dry and sometimes bitter to the palate. Who needs that? I bought a bottle of Dom Perignon from Costco for the Millennium New Year back in 2000. It completely changed my outlook on Champagnes. I now gravitate towards the sweet Champagnes. My local Costco stocks Wilson Creek Almond "Champagne" during the holidays which I am a fan of these days. It's relatively inexpensive and it's a sweet "Champagne" that we enjoy when gathering for holidays dinners.
  3. Their idea of a sale price and my idea of a bargain basement price ($2.99US or lower) are nowhere near each other. Still, any source of a sale listing is better than none at all.
  4. From this afternoon's stumblings...some may have been posted before... Paula Wolfert's "Couscous and Other Good Food from Morocco" Kindle Edition $1.99US This was on sale about 2 years ago: Rose Levy Beranbaum's "Rose's All-Original All-American Pie Recipes" Kindle Edition $2.99US Ken Haedrich's "Pie Zero to Pie Hero: How to Ditch Your Fears, Master the Crust and Bake the Perfect Pie" Kindle Edition $0.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  5. I confess I stumble on to them. I do use the daily Bookbub email notification but have found they only recommend a single cookbook per day (Pikers! ). I look at the info pages for cookbooks I am considering (but often bypass) and down below the main info section of the cookbook is a listing called "Customers who bought this item also bought". I peruse those cookbooks (use the side arrows to zip through about 15 pages of other cookbooks offered) and often find the proverbial "diamond in the rough"...meaning a cookbook on sale for a bargain-basement price. Note that I skip the "Sponsored Products related to this item" section as I don't need shilled items thrown at me, please. The two cookbooks I posted above were discovered in this manner.
  6. A couple others for this morning: James Beard-nominated food writer Sarah DiGregorio's "Adventures in Slow Cooking: 120 Slow-Cooker Recipes for People Who Love Food" Kindle Edition $1.99US From the chef, restaurant owner, and author of the critically lauded A Girl and Her Pig April Bloomfield's "A Girl and Her Greens: Hearty Meals from the Garden" Kindle Edition $1.99US Use the "Look Inside" feature on this book to see the extensive recipe index contained in the book. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  7. And the next step is...Pastrami from the Corned Beef! (click)
  8. My earlier response was a little impulsive and off the cuff, so to speak. Is soup the main course? Or is it an appetizer? Thinking about it, perhaps you could add more protein to his soup portion (keep a shredded rotisserie chicken on hand in your refrigerator). Or add some cheese (melted like the cheese on top of the crouton in French Onion Soup). Or make a grilled cheese sandwich to go with the soup...anything to distract him from claiming the "solids" in the soup. The extra protein would make him feel more full and he'll think he "won".
  9. Here you go: L-Fine Magnetic Hooks Strong Heavy Duty Refrigerator Neodymium Magnets Pull Power, 40 lb., Pack of 4
  10. Or hand him a sleeve of crackers so he can make more "solid" stuff in his soup on his own. Whatta whiny baby!
  11. I think I have a couple PowerPuff Girl magnets still in their plastic wrapping ("prizes" from a morning cereal box), some "Where the Wild Things Are" magnets, and some magnets that look like flattened Pez dispensers. My most recent magnet purchase was of 4 super strong magnet hooks (from Amazon). I swear an elephant could swing from them and not dislodge them. I got tired of the fly swatter hanging on a flimsy magnetic hook on the side of my refrigerator constantly falling off due to the faintest of breezes wafting by. Best magnet purchase ever.
  12. You are probably referring to "Victory Gardens" (click). As for the short growing season in Colorado, I wonder if starting some of the plants indoors/in a greenhouse, could have given better, or more productive, results. Regarding water and the ever increasing manner in which it needs to be portioned out, here in California we're quite used to the political fights up in Sacramento over who gets the water and how much. The fights never seem to get resolved and when they do it never seems to satisfy either side. As you point out, it's only going to get worse. Unfortunately, no one seems to want to plan for the future...they only want to plan enough to get through to the next election.

The Asian Chicken sandwich was okay. It comes dressed with an asian-flavored (sesame oil, etc) cole slaw. If the sandwich had had more of the slaw I would have tried the sandwich again. I haven't tried the other two sandwiches, yet.
  14. Hi, I'm Toliver the Enabler There were a lot of previously mentioned cookbooks (some from at least 1 year ago) but i won't list them again with one exception: "Bean By Bean: A Cookbook: More than 175 Recipes for Fresh Beans, Dried Beans, Cool Beans, Hot Beans, Savory Beans, Even Sweet Beans!" Kindle Edition $1.20US Odd price, even for a cookbook on sale... "The Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook: The number one best-seller now revised and expanded with new recipes" Kindle Edition $0.99US Wesley Avila's "Guerrilla Tacos: Recipes from the Streets of L.A." Kindle Edition $2.99US See the "Look Inside" feature to see his list of salsa recipes. The Deceptively Easy Dessert Cookbook: Simple Recipes for Extraordinary No-Bake & Baked Sweets" Kindle Edition $1.99US (read the fine print regarding the actual price) "Simply Beautiful Homemade Cakes: Extraordinary Recipes and Easy Decorating Techniques" Kindle Edition $2.99US Michele Scicolone's "The French Slow Cooker" Kindle Edition $2.99US It has a blurb by Dorie Greenspan in the book info. Two recipes from the cookbook are listed on this book's info page. Here's the "Previously mentioned cookbook on sale": "Lucky Peach Presents 101 Easy Asian Recipes" Kindle Edition $1.99US I am a US Prime member and the prices you see may vary.
  15. Slim pickings: "The Southern Food Truck Cookbook: Discover the South's Best Food on Four Wheels" Kindle Edition $.99US And, again, not what I would say is a real bargain, but I'm posting it because of the author: Gale Gand's "Chocolate and Vanilla" Kindle Edition $4.99US For anyone who may be interested, there are two Gale Gand recipes posted on the Amazon info page for this book.
  16. A tangential article related to Amazon's new ventures: "Amazon to Launch Delivery Service That Would Vie With FedEx, UPS" The US Post Office should be shaking in their collective boots with this news. If Amazon bypasses the USPS (which doesn't seem to get mentioned in the article), the USPS will lose a ton of money. The USPS and their shoddy delivery schedules were the rumored reason why Amazon shuttered Amazon Fresh. After all, it's only "fresh" if it gets delivered on time.
  17. Wait...she couldn't eat the whole thing? Piker! Amateur! Pfftt, I say to you! Yes, this... I used to patronize a local diner that served both types. Each version has their own merits.
  18. With undertones of moose and beaver, as well?
  19. Ah, math raises it's ugly face, yet again. Yes, Dollar General is not a 99¢ store, hence the word "Dollar" in the name of the store. Thank you for the correction.
  20. Thank you for the clarification. I was unfamiliar with her previous work. I mentioned the reworking of one of her other cookbooks into this one. Regarding this, the quote I mentioned from a review on the "Cook Simple" Amazon page says this: My guess is the reworking might be aimed at a changing the cookbook for a different market.
  21. This is the exact reason why I bought a Kindle. I could see what was happening to the free space in my apartment and had to find an alternative to having physical books. Edited to add this other find: Okay, it's not a true bargain price (which would be 99¢ or $1.99) but it's low enough to post. She's a British author with previous cookbooks to her name. This one seems to have been repackaged/renamed from another of her cookbooks (see the reviews on the Amazon info page for this book for details). Diana Henry's "Cook Simple: Effortless Cooking Every Day" Kindle Edition $3.99US I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  22. Another find this afternoon: John Barricelli's "The SoNo Baking Company Cookbook: The Best Sweet and Savory Recipes for Every Occasion" Kindle Edition $1.99US There's a recipe from the book for Ginger Cookies if you scroll further down the Amazon page for this book. I am a US Prime member and the price you see may vary.
  23. And ditto from me.
  24. The Vons Grocery store, down the street from the afore-mentioned Walmart Neighborhood Grocery store, is closing. They blinked. Vons announced the news a couple weeks ago. I've stayed away from the closing store and from what I am sure is the madness within of people scrambling for any sort of deal they can find. It's final closing date will be within a week or so. I would say it will likely be replaced by a 99¢ store except for the fact that there's already a Dollar General store in that same shopping center so that won't happen. I didn't shop at the Vons very often. Their prices were far more expensive than what Walmart offers. Before the Walmart came along, Vons was the only grocery store in my area and ruled the roost. They were, eventually, in for a rude awakening, as it has come to pass. But on the flip side, Walmart used to carry Eckrich Sausages and got me hooked on them (I got my mom hooked on them because they were skinless and she could eat them without any...uhm...dental issues. Then Walmart stopped carrying Eckrich (maybe Eckrich didn't pay them enough to carry the brand any longer ). So back I would go to Vons for the Eckrich Sausage. Now I will have to drive much further away, to another neighborhood and to another Vons, to buy that brand. I m sure this story of a closing grocery store will repeat itself in other neighborhoods/states in the US.
  25. The other shoe is dropping: "Kale to go: Amazon to roll out delivery at Whole Foods" It's starting in 4 US cities and will (likely) spread to the rest of the country, eventually, via Whole Foods.
