  1. Huge congratulations to you, Chris! Always thought you'd be perfect for your own show . Any chance you'll get out to Portland? There's some amazing food out this way.
  2. Abra, thank you for such beautiful pictures. Now I really, really want to go to Andina. Soon.
  3. Have you tried freezing them after baking? That might keep them crisp and fresh until serving.
  4. My sister has hypoglycemia, so I've gotten to know her reactions really well. Now, if I tell her to eat something, she does it without asking - since I can often tell that her blood sugar is low when she can't. She usually does a fast acting carb and a protein as well, so I make sure there are always quick options at my house for her. She carries trail mix and other quick foods for when it's been too long in between meals as well. I find *I* feel a lot better when I eat more frequent, smaller meals with a better balance of protein and carbs. You're right - this is the diet we really all should be following.

    Tempura--Cook-Off 22

Asparagus tempura is one of my very favorite things. Looks delicious, Jake!
  6. I'm curious about raspberry care as well - hoping to add in some raspberries in as well.
  7. The smell does it for me, too. Used to have a huge Meyer lemon tree in my back yard while I was growing up, and that smell has all kinds of wonderful associations for me. We've got a sizable porch, so it sounds like bringing it out is do-able. Thanks!
  8. How well do lemon trees fare? I have a Meyer lemon that I'd like to move with me, but I'm concerned about the colder winter nights.
  9. Right by the train station is a huge plus - I would much rather ride for three hours than sit behind the wheel of my car. Sounds like a trip I need to take very soon!
  10. I do the plate over bowl thing as well! Also to avoid trash. Do go on .
  11. So.....how much of a drive would it be from Portland? I'm drooling uncontrolably right now.
  12. Ooooh, a blog with FIRE. Right up my alley . I'm really curious about smoking, and will be paying close attention. Oh, and could I request a picture with some flames? (says the closet pyro )
  13. We do breakfast for dinner pretty regularly here. Waffles and berries are a big favorite, but so are pancakes or just simple scrambled eggs with sausage or bacon and fruit. Nice change of pace, and the a sure hit with the boys.
  14. Bhel puri could work if you bring all the components separately, then assemble right before serving. Haven't met anyone yet who doesn't love the mix of crisp, soft, sweet, salty, tangy, and spicy. Samosas, of course, are perfect for any occasion .
  15. Perfect! Thanks so much for the calendar link. Looks like warmer weather crops, plus I certainly have to try to get a tomato plant or three in.
  16. Avocados - one of my favorite foods, ever. Aside from on it's own, with some lime juice and salt, I love toasting a small flour tortilla a little, smashing avocado on top generously, dotting with some red onion, topping with a wee bit of grated cotija cheese, then broiling. Dollop of salsa on top and you have an incredible snack or lunch .
  17. Anyone know what I can plant at the start of June in Portland, Oregon? I'll most likely be using purchased plants and not seed, aside from some lettuce and radishes that are fast growing.
  18. Hmmm...."strangely obsessed" seems to fit me the best. I'm about as far from classist or elitist as you can come. I love really good food, love talking about it, making it, and eating it. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have some choice in what I eat, but then delicious food comes at all price and socio-economic levels.
  19. Just wanted to pop in and share that we found a house in Oregon (Milwaukie area) with a HUGE back yard. I'll be there by June 5th, and am already planning my garden. There's already a large rosemary plant out by the front door, which will be joined shortly by quite a few other herbs. Can't wait to start!
  20. Those look like the first time I tried to make choux puffs. They can be a bit fiddly, so don't feel bad! As others have said, I'm sure your guests will eat tremendously well
  21. "Let them eat cake." Note: there is nothing about pie in that quote
  22. With all this talk about Higgins...any recommendations on must try dishes there? I'm going this Saturday night with some friends (off house hunting in Portland, moving at in a month!).
  23. If I was forced to choose, it'd definitely be cake. Thankfully, I don't have to choose and can have chess tart and genoise to my heart's content .
  24. Happy belated birthday, Klary! Somehow I missed the start of this blog, but have been happily catching up. The rats are adorable and so sweet-looking. And did I spy "coleslaw" and "chips" in that food journal entry? Your writing isn't that bad ;-).
