  1. I loved riding the train for that very reason - nice, long stretches of reading time! I'd also knit en route, which probably makes me even more of a dinosaur .
  2. I've always considered Subway to be the very bottom of the submarine sandwich barrel. Not horriffic, but not particularly good, either. There is pretty much always somewhere else that has a better sandwich, usually not far away. Certainly not a place I'd go for dinner.
  3. My word - look at 30th street station now! It's amazing to see all the changes since I lived out that way. Glad to see The Village Restaurant still alive and kicking. I'm a bit shocked to see chains finally infiltrating such a special town, though. Ah well - that's progress for you.
  4. Thank you, thank you, thank you Ah Leung! This is one of my all time favorite dishes, and one I've been trying to master for years. I'll be trying this recipe as soon as I get my hands on some nice fresh green beans.
  5. So many memories! I used to take the R3 from Swarthmore into the city. Many a quick meal over at The Village Restaurant - loved their macaroni and cheese. Ate at the Ingleneuk more times than I can remember as well. There was a really good casual sandwich/ice cream place close by that had a tuba hanging from the ceiling, but I just can't remember the name of it. Any idea what I'm talking about?
  6. I can't wait to see this blog unfold! I have many happy memories of living and eating on the outskirts of Philadelphia .
  7. It's my pleasure. And what I should have added to the recipe is that it's imperitive that the first roll out of the oven gets slathered in butter. Then, later, one MUST fill another with leftover brisket. It's the rule. ← Now that sounds like a delicious rule to me! I'm really enjoying this blog. I grew up in a mildly Protestant family but had many Jewish friends in school, so I find the foods and restrictions fascinating. I still remember introducing my friends to turkey ham for the first time - they were just about delirious that they could eat "ham"!
  8. My Salter tares back to zero at the most inopportune times, too. I've heard this is a common complaint for the brand, just never gone to the trouble of replacing it.
  9. I make Grinders: split Italian bread brushed with olive oil, then layered with Genoa salami, provalone, fresh tomato, and filled with a salad of leaf lettuce, olive oil, s&p, and red pepper flakes. These taste better and better as they sit, so they make wonderful airplane fare. Add in some water and a nice, crispy apple, and I'm set.
  10. Congratulations! The main thing that helped me in the first trimester when I had nausea all day long was taking extra B6. My midwife suggested it, and I found that taking some first thing in the morning helped immensely. Don't worry too much about losing weight right now, as the baby doesn't really require extra calories until much later in the pregnancy.
  11. Is it crazy to already be planning a garden for a back yard I don't own yet? I can't wait to get my hands in the dirt and start!
  12. I'll put myself here as well. Hoping to add my own garden to the top of this list in the very near future, too.
  13. Heh heh....the best baby shower game I've ever come across involves an assortment of chocolate candy bars and confections and a bag of newborn diapers. The candy bars get a quick zap in the microwave to melt, then strategically placed on the diapers. Guests have to guess which candy bar each is (no tasting allowed - just by looks). Surprisingly realistic, and one of the funniest things I've ever participated in .

    The Cheese That Lives

I'm reminded of this older eGullet thread.
  15. Why am I thinking that the "stuff" in your refrigerator is far tastier and nicer than the "stuff" in mine?
  16. I just went out and bought some of this stuff. Took the heavy layer of greasy drek right off my oven hood, and I didn't even let it sit for any length of time. I can't wait to see what it does with my old cookie sheets!
  17. Your care for those around you is obvious, especially in how you treat the staff. It's impressive and heartening to find someone who works so hard to help better those around them. I'm sure your staff is more than content as well!

    Seekh Kebab

I always remove the seeds from cardamom pods and grind them, mainly because the pods are very fibrous and don't have much in the way of flavor. Kind of a pain, but worth it in the end, to my mind. I also agree on the super lean meat causing much of the dryness. You need some fat to moisten the meat as it cooks over such a high heat - hence the higher fat grinds usually used for hamburgers.
  19. This is such fascinating reading! I've long toyed with the idea of opening a bed and breakfast eventually, so I'm also taking notes. What are the things that surprised you when you started out? What aspects of catering to guests frustrates you the most? Also, a request for the seed bread recipe if possible. It sounds delicious! I have a simple whole grain quick bread that might suffice as well, if you're interested in the recipe.
  20. Oh, my - the thought of fresh lemonade while flea marketing has me salivating. I'd pay big time for that.
  21. What an incredible dinner! Not only does all the food look amazing, but it's obvious that everyone present had a wonderful time. The pork I believe was done sous vide, as discussed here. Never tried it myself, but the techno geek in me finds the whole topic fascinating.
  22. Eating placenta for medicinal value is a tradition in many other cultures as well.
  23. The one thing I cannot resist in any way, shape, or form is toffee pistachios dipped in chocolate. There is no such thing as eating one of those for me. Toffee of any kind is almost as tempting, and Almond Roca is close behind as well. I dearly love the combination of toffee, nuts, and chocolate.
  24. The only thing I can think of that I have almost every day is tea. Rice would be a close second.
  25. Cheese is very much an acquired taste for anyone who didn't grow up eating it. I'm not Chinese, but didn't taste cheese in any form until I was six years old due to a severe dairy allergy. I still remember trying it and thinking it tasted horrible - like something that had gone bad. It was years before I grew to accept the flavor, and more years before I really enjoyed cheese.
