  1. Used to hate but now love: eggplant, asparagus, tongue, olives, salty shrimp paste (Cantonese?) Used to love but now hate: canned creamed corn mixed with ketchup (lovely bright orange lumps), Kraft cheese macaroni drowned in a big bowl of cold milk (best part was the cold, cheesy milk ), Frosted Flakes
  2. Thanks for the course! I've never canned anything before, but I was thinking about pickling beans since they cost $6 for a small jar at the supermarket. Would I be able to use the same method and recipe as the one posted for the pickled shallots? If not, what should I do/use?
  3. I usually order my favorite meat on the menu (lamb or duck) or something else that I don't eat as often at home. I never order roast chicken b/c that's easily prepared. I don't order steak for the same reason, unless we're at a good steakhouse.
  4. yea, that's about right. never seen it anywhere else, including on congee, so you're one up on me there. I like pork fluff best just scooped out of the big plastic container with a spoon.
  5. You eat a lot of Chinese buns. Which one is your favorite? :) Mine is gai may bao. And the pineapple one with custard inside. Oh, actually my all-time favorite (but I rarely get it, since I've only seen it at one bakery in Chinatown) is the deep-fried one with red bean paste inside, and the whole fried bun is dredged in sugar. Sooooooooo good! (dao sa yong)

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

yea i know. You're envious too? Or were you the funny little man sitting beside me on the bus who kept looking at my lunch? see how envious i am? i'm even envious of those 3 eggs and deli meats. stop making fun of me Today I'm having a can of chilli.
  11. Will anyone bring a digi cam so we can take some pictures? On the evaluation form, there are spaces for the burger height, weight, and thickness. I guess we will be estimating those? Or should we bring a ruler and scale... The NYers estimated the height, weight, and thickness of Molly's burgers as no one brought a ruler or a scale. I guess we could just ask the ppl at Moderne how many oz. their burgers are.
  12. That veggie soup with the oyster tempura sounds delicious! Brie and gruyere are two of my favorites too. I don't remember ever having Jarlsberg.

  14. Whole, 2% or skim...? =R= D: 1% the one you left out. naturally... =R= Are you two related? whydja think that? we're just going back and forth with quite natural semi-humorous responses. Oh, I just thought he was your brother or something and you guys lived together. Just wondering...not making any assumptions
  15. Whole, 2% or skim...? =R= D: 1% the one you left out. I have a group of college friends with which I regularly share a vacation house for the week. After years of having to buy four different kinds of milk, I buy whole and skim and let people mix their own. Bruce I used to have a roommate in college who would only eat cereal with half and half. Pretty sure he's dead by now =R= I knew a girl in high school who used to drink CREAM instead of milk. She kept telling me how it tastes much better, but I've yet to try.

    Lunch! (2003-2012)

I'm so envious after reading this thread. I ate 3 cold hardboiled eggs and some deli meat (packed in a tupperware container) on a jam-packed bus on my way to school. (Slept in and missed my first class).

    Congee

My favorite congee is with salted pork, pidan, and dried oysters. And the Chinese fried long donut things on the side, of course! My second favorite is with the sliced fresh fish, scallion, and ginger mentioned in this thread. My dad makes the best version with fresh sole. It's so delicious.

    Burger Club

Ling, I'vew been trying to do this for 24 hours. It's Fink's place, and it's in NJ forums. Rachel, I think Fink said he substituted a tablespoon of fat for butter. Wow. After reading that thread I am incredibly hungry for BBQed pulled pork or ribs. The closest thing I have in the fridge is some cold roast beef deli meat. *cries* The bacon chocolate chip cookies sound interesting, though. I've read that you're quite the legendary baker, elyse! Do you have a recipe in the archive to share? I've been using Anna Olson's recipe from www.foodtv.ca for about a year and so far it's my favorite, but I'm looking to try some different cookie recipes. Maybe I'll go start a thread right now...
  19. Oh yeah, add hot and sour soup and pho to my list too!
  20. Whole, 2% or skim...? =R= D: 1% the one you left out. naturally... =R= Are you two related?
  21. Chinese: 1. fa gao (fish stomach? but only if it's the best quality) 2. snake 3. shark fin Other: -french onion with lotsa cheese! -miso -tomato-based, slightly spicy seafood chowder (with a nice ribbon of cream on the top)
  22. I want to have dinner at your house. Beef tendon is one of my favorite things (especially with rice noodles and msg-laden broth) but I think pig intestines smell reaaaaaaaaaaally bad.
  23. I think everything you listed is fine, except for the cheese. I think the cheese would detract from the taste of the meat. (I vote for beef burgers only, too.) Cheeseburger-lovers can always add on their cheese after the initial bite or two.
  24. I've heard that these places are also good: -Burger Heaven (in New West) -Wally's -Red Onion -Market Grill ...haven't tried the burgers at any of these places though.
