I've seen that picture of the deep fried chicken head floating around on the internet before. I think the guy who made the site just used it as a joke.

I live in Richmond. :) I camped for a week in Osoyoos back in late June. The weather was soooo beautiful and hot! I ate pounds of the best cherries everyday. They were so cheap!

Buttertarts--haven't had those in awhile. Buttertarts and nanaimo bars are 2 of my all-time favorite sweet treats. Great story, btw -

A Canadian original. God: Chocolate, coconut, custard powder---a serious sin. Post your recipe, ling! I bought my monster-sized Nanaimo bar for $1.40 (tax included!) at one of the food places on campus, but here's a link to the recipe: http://www.tourism.nanaimo.bc.ca/visitorin..._nanaimobar.asp -
PMS: Tell it Like It Is. Your cravings, Babe (Part 1)

heh heh...same here. After Burger Club, I went and bought a bag of those addictive Two-Bite Brownies. And didn't really see the point in saving any for the next day, so I just ate the whole bag. Also ate a whole bag of chocolate Teddy Grahams the next day. Just can't seem to put the bag away after it's been opened! -

I like anything really, really REALLY sweet...like Nanaimo bars, chocolate bars (O Henry's, especially!), chocolate brownies, chocolate almonds, peanut brittle....yum. Had all of those last week. -
No, but tlafleche mentioned it earlier. Is this a restaurant? A cafeteria-setting? tlafleche said it was a "burger counter". I'm curious about this place as well.
-
Dee--I live in BC too. Where do you sell your cakes?
-
boris and tlafleche: thanks for the suggestions! I think the renovations at Red Onion are finished. I remember seeing ppl seated inside the restaurant a few days ago when I was bussing to school.
-
The first three food items I thought of were: -hamburgers -mashed potatoes -apple pie
-
I had chicken samosas and two date squares (crumbly shortbread cookie base, thick smear of pureed dates with strusel topping...one of my favorite treats!) And some Hallowe'en chocolate bars...O Henry and Twix.

"The Best Of" had a segment on this place on their burger episode, I think.

It was nice meeting you all! Thanks for coming out. Too bad they didn't have a bigger table so we could've all sat together though... I liked my burger at Moderne, but I didn't think it was incredible. At 8-10% fat, the steak burger wasn't greasy or juicy enough for me. I wish they seasoned the meat, and I would have liked fewer toppings and more meat. I liked the fries and the mayo though. Overall, I think they have a good burger at Moderne, but I think there are better ones in Vancouver.

RANDOM COMMENTS FROM EVALUATORS -somewhat expensive for a burger -too messy to eat -burger was well-done, juicy, unusually salty -seedless bun (but a good thing) -too many toppings -warm on arrival (but not hot) -way too many fries -interesting smoky mayo hickory dip (for the fries)

I had 2 chicken fajitas and a nanaimo bar. Mmm...chocolately, custardy, coconuty goodness.
-
I had sourdough buns, 2 chocolate bars (Oh Henry), a Twoonie Tuesdays meal from KFC (2 pieces of chicken, small fries) and a Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia Peace bar. I was really craving junk food today. And the Ben and Jerry's ice cream was pretty expensive ($3.29 from 7-11) but I decided to try it after reading the raves on Egullet. It tasted like raspberry ice-cream to me.

I would suggest making bread pudding with the croissants too. Then you wouldn't have to waste them, and have dessert taken care of the night they come.

Here's the Martha Stewart recipe. It's not on her website--I wonder why? I think I copied it down when I was watching her show. I'm not 100% sure I'm allowed to post this, but I've made some changes to the recipe (noted) so I think it should be OK. Chocolate layer cake with chocolate frosting Ingredients (for cake): -1 cup cocoa powder -3/4 cup strong coffee -1 cup warm milk -2 and 3/4 cup sifted cake flour (not the self-raising kind) -1/2 tsp. salt -1 tsp. baking soda -1 and a 1/2 cup unsalted butter -2 and a 1/2 cup granulated sugar -1 tbsp vanilla extract -4 large eggs You also need: -2 eight-inch cake pans, at least 2" deep -parchment paper (or wax paper) -extra butter for greasing the pans Steps: 1. Trace a circle on the parchment paper using the bottom of your cake pan. Cut it out and place in pan. Butter the parchment paper and sides of pan. 2. Whisk cocoa, hot strong coffee, and milk in a large bowl. Let the mixture cool. (You can stick it in the fridge while you assemble the dry ingredients.) 3. In a separate bowl, sift together cake flour, salt, and baking soda. Set aside. 4. Cream together softened butter, sugar, vanilla extract. Add eggs one at a time while continuing to stir. Pour in cooled cocoa mix. Add dry ingredients and mix until it no longer looks grainy. 5. Divide batter between cake pans. Smooth top. Bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees F, rotate pans and bake another 20 minutes or until cake top springs back when lightly pressed. 6. Invert pans for 15 minutes, then let cool on racks for an hour. 7. Peel away parchment, and frost layers. Ingredients (for chocolate frosting): -1/2 cup unsalted butter -3/4 cup confectioner's sugar (icing sugar) -1 cup cocoa powder (again, not the presweetened stuff) -1/4 cup milk -2 tsps. vanilla extract 1. Cream all the ingredients together until combined. 2. Place one cake layer on a cake stand (or plate). 3. Spread frosting on layer, and place the 2nd layer on top of frosting. 4. Frost the top of the cake and sides. ************ The original recipe called for a baking time of only 35 minutes, and 1/2 cup of milk in the frosting.

I agree, the fries look delicious! The tomato slice and lettuce not so much though....

I think I know which recipe you're talking about. It's one of my favorite chocolate cake recipes too!

I used: 3 Fujis 1 Granny Smith 4 Golden Delicious
-
I just made my first apple pie tonight. I used a mix of Golden Delicious, Fuji, and Granny Smith. Used flour (a good 4 tbsp. for 3 lbs. of apples) in the coating too. I had about 1 cup of liquid, which I drained (very carefully) after the pie was baked, just by tilting the pie over a bowl (I made a lattice top crust). Then I reduced the liquid until I had only about a quarter of a cup, and carefully spooned it back over the apples through the lattice "holes". It worked well; my pie stood up and the syrup was thick and delicious. But why did I have so much liquid anyway? I thought I was using the "right" apples?!

I like heavy chocolate cakes with thick, buttery dark chocolate icing. Also, moist carrot cake with a super-thick layer of cream-cheese icing (not too sweet, but made with lots and lots of cream cheese).

Mmm...Krispy Kreme. I think Vancouver's finally getting one in mid-2004. Don't have to go on 2 hour (one-way) KK runs (to Issaquah) anymore. Was it a plain glazed? My favorites are the plain ones and the cream-filled ones. I can eat 4 or 5 of those after a Fatburger meal (conveniently located next to the Issaquah KK). I just made my first ever apple pie.
