  1. I don't know if you will see this in time, but I'll be there just after noon today.
  2. I think I've tried every single one of the desserts at the Bread Garden back in high school, and I've never really enjoyed any one of them (sorry Arne! Homemade bread pudding is so much better! Especially when you make it with croissants and whipping cream... ) However, have you looked in the Bread Garden just off Robson? They have some new desserts that I haven't tried, and they look better than the regular offerings.
  3. It says in the article that Americans smoke almost as much as the French do.
  4. ...and a bit of a carnivore I might add. ← I can be a carnivore, but I'm actually a true dessertarian at heart.
  5. No, I'm leaving late Friday afternoon or early evening.
  6. ^I am terribly uncoordinated on the slopes. Let's just say it took me about 2 hours to get down the bunny slope in grade 10, and this is after the snowboarding instructor gave me a private lesson after all my classmates started whizzing down the mountain! My legs were completely bruised for weeks. Crepe Montange sounds good, as does Citta. Are these places open for dinner, or lunch only? I love Greek food, so Kypriaki sounds good too.
  7. ^sadly no, I haven't even tried one kolachy yet. I'm most likely going there tomorrow for lunch though. That's me in my avatar so say hi if you see me!
  8. If price were no object, my other choices would have been Coast, Circolo, Parkside, possibly Raincity Grill for the elk, and Roy's Steakhouse for the 10oz veal T-bone and bourbon pecan pie with whiskey cream, just because I'm a glutton.

    Sausage Party

I thought of something else when I read "Sausage Party". I thought you were having a bunch of guys over to watch football or something.
  10. I'm going up to Whistler with some friends for the weekend and we're looking for a place to have dinner on Saturday. There will be about 13 ppl and most of us are students so we don't want to spend too much, if possible. Also, one of the girls is vegetarian so I don't know if a burger place is a great idea because then she's pretty much limited to eating a veggie burger (yuck). Any suggestions? Wine list is not that important because we'll be getting smashed later that night anyway. edit: Any lunch suggestions would be great too--I'll be eating lunch alone since everyone will be snowboarding until 3pm.
  11. Ling ... were we separated at birth? A. ← Yes, but I grew hair.
  12. ^Dim sum is a great choice. Chinese restaurants are so loud that no one will mind if your youngsters get a bit rambunctious.
  13. I forgot to mention that I'm probably stopping by the Hamilton Street Grill too, but perhaps later in February so my wallet (or rather, my bf's wallet) can recover a bit.
  14. I've chosen Bis Moreno and the Irish Heather. And of course, I'll be there at West for the egullet dinner. (I already know what I'm ordering at all three restaurants. Anyone else like to pre-plan? ) The Irish Heather menu looks great--I love stick-to-your-ribs type of food. I can't wait to eat the beer-braised shortribs and blue cheese polenta! Their Dine-Out menu is a steal at $15! So which restaurants have you chosen? Have you been there before? Was price/value a factor? Of my choices, I've only been to West. I chose Bis Moreno based on their menu, and the fact that I live in the same building and have been wanting to try their food. I chose the Irish Heather because of the short ribs and the fact that they have a mixed nut sugar pie as a dessert option. Price was also a consideration.
  15. My mom had to force feed me oatmeal or cream of wheat whenever she made it--I hated the stuff! She would always crack an egg into the oatmeal and swirl it in. I put brown sugar and full-fat milk in my hot cereal. Often, I would ladle out a very small portion of the cereal, drown it with milk and sugar, and then "drink" it down as fast as I could. I've always loved the oatmeal topping in fruit crumble and oatmeal cookies, though.
  16. Thought today would be a good day to get my first kolachy, so I checked a map and felt pretty confident I could get there without getting lost. It's only a few minutes away by car. Unfortunately, I missed Beatty Street not once, but twice. (I went over the Cambie bridge.) Still undeterred, I weaved my way through traffic once more, and parked on Nelson, (genius!) intending to walk to the rest of the way to the Kolachy Shop. When I finally get there, the place was dark and a sign said that it was closed today and will re-open tomorrow. I just wasted 45 minutes of my life.
  17. What makes an egg "organic"? (Is it organic if there are no antibiotics or medications in the chicken feed? If so, I only buy organic eggs, like Born 3 or sometimes Nature-Egg. The egg yolks taste a lot better than your regular supermarket variety.) I would no doubt choose organic vegetables over regular vegetables if the price were the same. There was an article in the Vancouver Sun a few weeks ago that mentioned that the vegetables we currently consume are not as nutritious as those grown 50 years ago, since producers are most concerned with size and how long the vegetables can stay fresh through shipping. Also, organic vegetables were tested alongside regular vegetables, and organic vegetables were reported to be more nutritious.
  18. I read about this in the December issue of EAT. They're called "crotchless" shots and theyre served at 2% Jazz Espresso in Victoria. I don't think any Vancouver places are doing this yet unfortunately, but I'd like to try one.
  19. ^Great! Now I just need to save up a couple hundred for the plane ticket.
  20. If we had a place like this in Vancouver, I would certainly start saving my money today. The food looks fantastic! Really, I can't say how envious I am! Are the hors d'oeuvres included in the buffet? Those look especially good.
  21. I'm quite sure you split the bundt cake and spread the filling in between the layers.
  22. Sounds tasty....and very creative !! ← Thanks but I can't take all the credit; I saw someone do something similar on FoodTV. This morning I heated up leftovers from last night's hot pot dinner. I had: -12 medium/largish oysters -thin slices of lamb, pork, fatty beef (this is what it says on the package...it's just very well-marbled), and pork cut especially for hot pot -enoki mushrooms, various vegetables -3 kinds of noodles (my favourite is the yam noodle) -squid, prawns -3 kinds of fried tofu (my favourite is a square-shaped tofu blended with fish paste) -3 kinds of fish "cake"--fish that has been whizzed in the food processor, seasoned with loads of MSG, pressed into "cakes" and then fried -pork liver -Chinese fish balls and meat balls This was all simmered in my mom's homemade chicken broth. There was also pork blood, but I don't like to eat that. Washed all that down with 2 cups of Illy coffee.
  23. I tried to detox about a year ago, but I only lasted 2 days. I gained a few pounds over the holidays too, but I think they'll come right off as soon as I cut down on the sweets. I don't plan to eliminate anything though. I'll still have desserts on the weekend.
  24. I lined my muffin tins with slices of ham, spooned in some cream cheese, minced chives, cracked an egg on top, s&p. Baked at 350F for about 12 minutes. Yum
  25. I've never heard of this tradition, but I know I will be eating hot pot (like shabu shabu) tonight with my family and there will be thin slices of pork, lamb, and beef (not to mention a host of seafood and other goodies) to dip into the hot broth.
