You're right--I've edited my post. I was thinking about Oakridge Center for some reason when I was typing 41st and Cambie.

We went to Moderne for the 1st Burger Club outing. I didn't know if people wanted to go there again. It would be fine with me if we did though, since I haven't been back since Burger Club and their burgers were quite good.

^I've never eaten at the Fairmont at the airport, but Foodie in Vancouver was telling me that the lounge there is very nice. Do the burgers there come with fries, and are they good? (Or better yet--can you get your burger with onion rings?) So, here's the updated list of suggestions: -The Red Onion -Vera's -Hamburger Mary's -The Fairmont (at the airport) -Brown's (in N. Vancouver) Has anyone had the burgers at Joe's Grill? I like the food there, but haven't yet tried their burger. edit: I was scrolling through this thread and noticed that we had considered going to Harlow's at one point. They're located at 18th and Cambie. I wonder if it's still there?

I had 4 scrambled eggs, and potato wedges roasted in schmaltz. The potatoes were particularly tasty...I roasted a big pan of them at 450 degrees for about 40 minutes.

^I believe Il Terrazzo is in Victoria, as montrachet said earlier. I've had dinner at Il Terrazzo and the osso buco was OK, but not incredible. The meat could have been more tender, but the marrow was soft and creamy.

I am defrosting chicken in the fridge right now, and I'm making larb with chicken (both dark and white meat) tomorrow. I've only made larb with pork before, so I'm excited to see how the chicken turns out. I also have about a cup of schmaltz that I carefully rendered from 3 chickens a few nights ago, and I will be stir-frying some vegetables in the schmaltz, and roasting rosemary potato wedges with the rest. That will round out our larb meal nicely, I think. And I have some Colston Basset stilton for dessert...yum!

Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 1)

How did you like the pot pie? I thought it looked great, but I haven't tried it yet. Last week I had kolachies at The Kolachy Shop. I had the bbq beef and the Chinese Long soup (I'm not sure what "long" refers to). The kolachy was good, but the soup wasn't great; it tasted like canned chicken broth, and it had some pork, noodles, and savoy cabbage in it. I drank a few glasses of Inniskillen pinot noir. Tonight I shared the bangers and mash and the mushroom strudel at the Irish Heather, after the cheese tasting. I like my sausages juicy and quite fatty, and these bangers were on the lean side for my tastes. The mushroom strudel was tasty, and I had to fight my bf for my fair share. Later tonight, I had dinner #2 at Bravo Bistro on Davie. I had the La Frenz merlot. and Eddy sent out a lovely platter with roasted red peppers, beets, Italian meat (drank too much tonight--the name escapes me!) pickled herring, and fresh baguette with butter (what could be better?). I ordered the sirloin tip with sunchoke and puy lentils, but sadly the sunchokes were missing from the dish. I was looking forward to trying them, but the puy lentils were delicious, so I'm not complaining too much The araguani chocolate tarts were the star of the evening--not too sweet, as peppyre noted, but very rich and gooey. The crust was light and crispy, and the dessert was garnished with a thin chocolate tuile and some candied orange slices that provided a nice sweet-tart contrast. -
omg...I just realized I've been calling the Elysian Room something else this entire thread! embarrassing....

My Americano on Saturday from the Elysium Room was really the best I'd ever had, and I've had Caffe Artigiano quite a few times in the past few months. I went to the Elysium Room again yesterday after work, and my Americano was slightly more bitter (made by a different barista) but still quite delicious.

I remember that add-ons such as bacon and cheese weren't allowed, because we were basically judging the meat and bun. The thought was that it wouldn't be really fair if we ate a burger with a pile of tasty fixin's, if the same toppings weren't available at another restaurant. I wouldn't mind if we made the rules more flexible, though.

Tonight I'm having chicken and avocado salad, with mayo and sour cream and a squeeze of lime.

If I can make it, I'm in.

Thanks for the replies, and thanks for the pictures, Patrick. I think I might pick up the Herme book instead. The pictures in that thread look great!
-
I had roast lamb, steamed brocolli, and roast potatoes and onions.

^I agree. I haven't found a Jackson Triggs wine I really like yet. I can't wait to see the wine awards in the magazine.

I've been wanting this book for awhile, but I thought I'd ask if anyone has had any experiences (good or bad) with these recipes. The desserts look extraordinary, and I'm looking for book with desserts for special occassions.

After picking up a few things at the "romance" boutique today (kidding... ) I found my way to the Elysium Room thanks to Joie. My Americano was great! (Was that you, Alisdair? I didn't want to sound all dorky by saying, "Hi I'm Ling on Egullet--do you post on there too?" I was the asian girl who came in around 8:30pm.) The cookies looked good too, but I'll have to report back on those (had a few too many cookies already earlier in the day ) The Elysium Room is on my way home...this could get expensive.

My credit card took a beating this month, but I might just have to buy the pan. Thanks, Deborah!

I must be driving past the Elysium Room everyday (it's on Burrard and 5th, right?) but I still haven't spotted it. I also drove down 5th to search for it, but all I found was a "romance" boutique.

No problem! All I ask is for is a short review after you try the food there.

I still get the most requests for a coffee-flavoured chiffon cake that I've been baking since I was 11 or 12. It's light and airy, and the coffee flavour is very mild. It's very simple and not very sweet. I also get cheesecake requests quite often. I made a plain cheesecake with a chocolate crust, topped with homemade caramel sauce and chocolate shavings that went over well for Christmas.

PaoPao, if it is Frederico's Supper Club you're thinking about trying, they always have a 2 for 1 coupon in the Georgia Straight. I've never been there, but Italian food and dancing afterwards sounds like fun!

(just wanted to add that montrachet suggested that the 36 dollar bottle could be the Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spatlese, and I think that's right)

How strange! I remember the chef instructor at JJ's was doing a cooking demo at PNE a few years ago, and he said the same thing. He was making crab cakes. I answered some trivia question correctly, and got to eat them. They were good, but they definitely needed salt.

I like Church's fried chicken too! I also love the taiwanese-style fried chicken at Liu's in Richmond (next to Richmond Sushi).
