  1. Actually, have you seen the bakery section? The selection of baked goodies is much better at Urban Fare (I'm partial to the pecan tart), and they have the exotic fruits section too, not to mention the oils and vinegars.
  2. ^I've seen that recipe before...it looks really good! I love chocolate with ancho.
  3. To me, Valentine's Day means chocolate chocolate chocolate and over-the-top desserts! I am considering a flourless chocolate cake after seeing all the great recipes in this thread: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=60266 The chocolate pave recipe in the Pierre Herme thread also looks wonderful, but I don't have the book. The nutella tart is a possibility though, since I think I've seen the recipe on the web before. I have also yet to try a chocolate pecan pie, although that's not a very romantic dessert, is it? What are you baking for your special dinner?
  4. ^I think I've read before that the average person eats about 3 lbs. of food a day, so 5 lbs. of cheesecake isn't that much of a stretch, is it? How big is a 5 lb. cheesecake anyway--about a 10" size? I definitely think I could manage that in a day.
  5. That meal looks absolutely fantastic! Everything looked delicious. I am especially drooling over the lamb meatballs, the pork, the twice-baked potatoes, the napoleons and chocolates...WOW!
  6. is this a sandwich?like a hoagie? ← No, it's like an espresso with hot water, I believe. It's about as strong as coffee.
  7. Had a rather boring food day....so the most delicious thing would probably be my Americano from the Elysian Room (in Vancouver).
  8. Isn't hitting 3 places in one night about par for the course for you, Ling? ← Ling - you ARE a machine. I am in awe and humbled by your eating abilities. ← I hit three places but I didnt eat at all three!!
  9. My last 3: Bis Moreno and West for DOV...I've already posted about both. Last night...walked down to Fresgno's Inn for a greasy burger but they were closing (only open until 1 am from Sunday-Thursday, but still open 24 hours Friday and Saturday). Then I tried Fritz's because I haven't had poutine in a while--also closed. Ended up with garlic cheese pizza at Fresh Slice (seems a little cleaner than the other 99 cent pizza places.) It wasn't horrible, but maybe I was just really hungry because I was watching Iron Chef America (which my bf thoughtfully taped for me).
  10. I think I had the truffles that spaghettti posted a picture of on the 1st page of this thread, but they were from Costco, so I don't know if they're the same.
  11. ^I get to have gingerbread pudding in a week. I am drooling in anticipation.... Your recent meals sound fab, Deborah!
  12. ^I agree! I just made schmaltz last week, and then I poured the fat over potato wedges. Roast at 450 for about 45 minutes (with lots of salt and pepper) and you have the BEST potatoes you've ever eaten!
  13. That doesn't sound very tasty to me. I think I've heard some wines being described as tasting like tar before. Why would anyone find this appealing? Or is the taste of tar pretty much off-putting to everyone? There are about 8 bottles of the Salice Salentino left at Marquis. btw: I didn't mean for my post to sound rude, but I honestly don't know why people would drink something that tasted like roofing tar. School me, please.
  14. I think it was mentioned on page 1 that Keith's pick is the next WOW. Hope this still stands, b/c I'm off to find it now. I didn't have the 1st WOW b/c I was terribly poor after the holidays. I would be nice if we had a new WOW every 2 weeks, but if not, I'll just do it every other week.
  15. Mario was eating muffalettas yesterday on his show (I forget the name of the place, but it wasn't Central Grocery) and now I have a craving for olive relish and meat.
  16. I'm turning my leftover scallion mashed potatoes into potato croquettes.
  17. origamicrane: that's hilarious! You're definitely the biggest foodie.
  18. ^So the pot roast is gone?
  19. The wedding cake looks marvelous! You have a lucky, lucky friend.
  20. Irish Heather is also serving cinnamon ice-cream with one of their DOV desserts.
  21. ^just wanted to chime in that I've made the Cappuccino Fudge cheesecake many times and it's a great recipe! We always eat huge slices though, but the dainty squares look cute!
  22. I am looking forward to Irish Heather on Saturday at 6pm. Anyone else have reservations? I also want to make it to Hamilton Street Grill next week.
  23. As everyone noted above, the food at West was superb. My favourites were the pork terrine, the beet and argula salad that came with the goat cheese tart, the crispy polenta from the veal dish, the chocolate bavarois, and my extra "chocolate tasting" (especially the chocolate parfait with sour cherry sauce! Amazing!) Jeffy Boy and lemon curd were excellent dining companians! We shared a bottle of pinot noir and I had the Wandering Star cocktail (with Chambord, creme de cacao) and my bf had the Ka-Bling. The Ka-Bling was really good, a little tart and very gangsta.

    Dinner! 2005

-baked salmon with wasabi mayonnaise -stir-fried vegetables -scallion mashed potatoes with lots of butter!
  25. My fall-back dessert depends on the crowd I'm feeding. Big crowd, people my age --> cheesecake Small crowd, people my age --> pie (could be blueberry or apple, or one of my personal favourites which is chocolate and peanut butter pie) Big crowd, older people present (e.g relatives over for dinner) --> cheesecake for the younger people, and some sort of not-too-sweet cake for the older people, like chiffon cake, or lemon pound cake
