eG Foodblog: slkinsey's Thanksgiving Week Diary
Ling replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
Oh god, crepes with Nutella! I have to buy some Nutella tomorrow. You two did an incredible amount of work for Thanksgiving, and it sure shows in your beautiful dishes. Your guests are too lucky! -
I like picking a different goodie from the deli case every time I'm there. The cherry tomatoes stuffed with feta are also good! I like using Elsa's Story Black Pepper crackers for their dips. (Love CSI too )

I haven't had dinner yet, but this is what I'll be eating tonight: -roast pork and bbq duck with plum sauce from a Chinese butcher shop -mussels steamed with white wine, ginger, scallions, some soy sauce -rice and some sort of vegetable...maybe just some stir-fried bean sprouts I also made almond biscotti for dessert. I've tried a few biscotti recipes over last few months, and this is my favourite so far. It's on the King Arthur Flour website under "Traditional Italian Biscotti". It's not quite as crunchy as most biscotti because it contains 1/4 cup butter, 1/4 shortening, and 3 eggs. (I can't wait for that crispy, crunchy skin on the bbq pork!)

I'm so impressed with your ingenuity. Thanks for sharing the pictures and the method. Maybe I'll make these for Christmas!

I've been eating these "Gone Crackers" brand crackers that I bought from Urban Fare (made by a company in Delta). I love the blue cheese flavour. They're a little pricey for the amount you get--a box of these things make a nice snack. www.gonecrackers.ca

I like the pizza at Marcello's as well. Haven't been to Lombardo's or Incendio so I can't comment on those places.
-
I've eaten at Las Magaritas a few times when it was a friend's choice. I didn't really care for the food though...but the portions are big.

Are you up for a blog soon? I would definitely be very interested in seeing you do one! Hanger steak is difficult to find in Vancouver too. Chef Neil (he owns a steak restaurant called the Hamilton Street Grill and is also an egullet member) ordered it for his restaurant from his supplier and offered to let us buy some at wholesale prices. Maybe if you have connections with a local chef, he could get some in for you?

Too bad Thanksgiving was last month in Canada. I'm craving stuffing now. Tonight I had a variety of delicacies.... -a pan of tater tots -some cold Beef Bourguinon (too lazy to heat it up) -Chinese-style spicy beef jerky -a diced avocado with salt and lemon juice -peanut butter and crackers -stir-fried zuchinni Last night I made cheese quesadillas.

I vote for Buttercream Bakery. Katiecakes and Buttercream Dreams are both cute names, but like someone pointed out, I can't really see a man buying a cake from a "Katiecakes".

Man, I wish I ate like that when I was in college And you get somosas at school? I am making up for it now, but so is my waist-line ← Thanks! I just recently started experimenting with different recipes since I moved into my own apartment 2 months ago. The place that sells samosas also carries different types of curries, butter chicken, soups, sandwiches, sushi, and a bunch of sweets. It's cheap too! My favorite place on campus to eat.

Those sound fantastic! When I clicked on the thread, I was picturing your idea to be thin slices of sweet potato dredged in a thin, cinnamony batter and then fried. I like you idea much better though!
-
I've tried many different varieties of apples and I think Fuji apples are the best in pies. The 24 hr apples sound like a good idea though, and I've never made anything like that before.

I received a very big fruit basket last week and all I have left are these 5 really big, Red Delicious apples. I never eat these because the ones we get in Vancouver are tasteless, and as I understand they're not very good cooking apples either. Is there anything I can do with them? I don't really want to throw away perfectly good food.
-
oh yes, of course!
-
-pecan pie -cheesecake with a sourcream topping and a very thick graham crust -napoleons from Payard (not that I'd ever eaten them before, but they look good!) -big fat cream puffs -chocolate cream pie -apple pie (must be made with lard in the crust!) sweet things for a bitter ending
-
I haven't been there, but my friend used to go there all the time. She says the steaks are good and cheap. (But I would take that with a grain of salt...she's not exactly an authority on good food. Now I feel like a b*tch. )

All your breakfasts and dinners look fantastic!

That's a perfect souffle. I am in awe. Your buttermilk pie looks good too. I've never had that before...must find a recipe and make it soon!

I eat a lot when I am nervous about midterms/papers. OK that's just an excuse... but I do try to work it off on my elliptical machine during the week. I actually omitted some of the food I ate last night because I didn't want to disgust anyone. You can add salt and vinegar chips, BBQ chips, Rainforest crisps, and the last of these weird-looking Asian spicy peanut things that are covered in flour and fried (they are large and oval-shaped) to my after-dinner snacks. I had a light breakfast of 2 oranges and a pear because when I woke up, I was still full. After my midterm and my other classes today, I'm going to make BEEF BOUGUIGNON again--bigger pot this time. However, since it has to sit in the fridge overnight, I'm probably going to grab samosas and a date square from school for dinner. (Prime rib is one of my favourite foods...especially the meat around the ribs. I love baked, then mashed sweet potatoes with some butter mixed in!)
-
malt vinegar various types of flavored mayo nothing beats hot gravy with cheese curds though!
-
hanger steak marinated overnight in red wine, worcestershire sauce, garlic and shallots, zucchini, and pan-fried polenta topped with melted cheese and then half a pan of tater tots, edamame, and 2 frozen bananas as snacks

Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 1)
Ling replied to a topic in Western Canada: Dining
Ling, it's at 888 Beatty ... sorry Brian. Secret's out See you there for lunch tommorrow? A. ← have a midterm tomorrow (that I should be studying for right now) so the sandwich will have to wait until Tuesday!
