Baking Soda and Baking Powder in Europe
Joe Blowe replied to a topic in Elsewhere in Europe: Cooking & Baking
I finally found the corner of a torn-out page I was looking for! From an unknown issue of Saveur magazine, a recipe for baking powder: 1/4 cup Cream of Tartar 2 tbsp. Baking Soda 1 tbsp. Cornstarch Sift ingredients together three times. Store, at room temperature, up to 6 weeks in a tight-sealing jar. Makes about 1/2 cup of baking powder. Of course, this assumes you'll be able to easily find the main ingredients. -
Reviews on the Brewstation have been very mixed -- but as long as you're aware of it's limitations, enjoy it!

If you're concerned about finding them in the U.S., don't worry, they're here!

Interesting product. I wonder if it's worth the extra money for that unit and reusable bags... FWIW, I bought the Handi-Vac a few weeks ago and I think it's a great addition to my FoodSaver. I notice that it doesn't hold a good seal for more than a few days, but for something you access regularly, it's the tops! Now that I see that Vacu-Seal, I wonder if you can skip buying the unit and use their bags with the FoodSaver accessory hose? May have to bite the bullet and buy a box

Contacting this group might be of some help, but I'm not aware of any U.S. sources or importers. If someone here does know of a source, you can bet they'll post details. Welcome to eGullet!

As already mentioned, don't worry about the impact on resale value with a small item like this. Homes aren't shrines -- new owners love ripping ol' crap out. I know I do. Regarding disposals in general, I've slowly come around to not liking them. They were in every house I lived in until I moved to N.Y.C., and I actually enjoyed the freedom of not being the designated disposal repairman! When I moved back to L.A., I was re-exposed to them. But by then my habits had changed: leave a strainer in the sink, dump the accumulated mess at the end of the day or as necessary. No more reverse-cranking jammed disposals, no more slow-running drains, no more stink-hole. Now I just keep of few of these babies around and toss 'em in the dishwasher when they get grungy...

According to their website, 12 amps. And say hello to my lil' Cadco -- always looking for an opportunity to show it off!

Do your due diligence (looks like you've already started) before buying into Greenpan. There's a great thread over at the cooking.com forums -- company shills pumping the product across the Internet, real world reports about the short-lived non-stick qualities of the pan, etc.My standard advice when it comes to non-stick pans: Buy cheap, buy often.

Maybe something like this would be better suited for your experiment...

Yes, yes! And that is why you should upgrade your knob! About 4 bucks at Lowe's or Home Depot...

Since we're giving shout-outs here , we should also thank La Española Meats for helping out with the red tape. I had a conversation with the owner, Juana, one day and she mentioned how much she went through to correct the earlier iberico fiasco and set up a proper importation channel. FWIW, La Española has been doing this since 1982 but has only had a web-presence since 2000. And, she sells a lot of product directly to La Tienda, so she says. I believe her, based on the appearance of their bricks-n-mortar location. If you're in the area, drop by. And, of course, I have no affiliation to La Española other than being a loyal customer!

Microfiber is a 100% synthetic product. Anything that is advertised as a non-poly alternative to microfiber is not going to give you the performance of microfiber. And if it's blended with cotton, you are going to lose the benefits of no lint, no scratch, high absorbency, quick drying, etc. If you want cotton, go with cotton...

FYI, the towels offered by Costco online are their "better" towels, i.e. overpriced towels. You can buy the cheaper type in their brick-n-mortar locations -- 30 Yellow Microfiber Towels for $15. In the automotive section...

opcioneschef, You don't say where you're located, but if you're near a Marukai 98 Cent store you'll find stainless steel tempura tongs that look just like Dave's feeding tongs. They cost, um, 98 cents!

I'm not familiar with Peterson's Vegetables, or why he may be so off-base about this. Or, maybe, you read incorrectly. Yes, fingerling potatoes are in the potato family! http://www.google.com/search?q=fingerling+tuberosum http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/b/Solanac...sum/cultivar/0/ http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=SOTU Plenty of picture identification at those sites and Google...

I would contact Thermoworks U.S. about a special order, because I know they do exist...

I've been secretly using one of these for the last six months or so -- didn't want to say anything about it, but since you got the thread rollin'... Yes, it's very good. I bought it for my wife who couldn't open a bottle of wine to save her life (that's what husbands are for, right?). It works on about 98% of the bottles I've come across. I'm still faster with a waiter's corkscrew, but it has become a regularly used gadget in our kitchen. BTW, got it at Costco for 13 bucks, so do shop around.

Oh man, I would've never believed it without the movie -- that thing is pretty damn quick! I'd say my Thermapen is only a fraction of second faster, but we all know how much more it costs. May have to hit eBay...

And if I'm deep frying or making candy, I should "preheat" my cheap thermometer so it's in the corresponding temp neighborhood? No thanks, I'll stick with my Thermapen...
