Dropped into the newly opened Okanagan Estate Wine Cellar 3600 W4th. Only been there 3 weeks-comely selection of OK VQA product and friendly enthusiastic staff. Well worth checking out if you're in the hood a long needed alternative to the drab and dingy Govt Liquor store nearby.

Now Open!!!! Had a Mocha somethingorother-very well made treat-not cheap of course. Bright clean well designed store with adorable gracious helpful staff-10-9 daily.

In the old 1st Ave Bread Garden locale Rocky Mountain Flatbreads "A Canmore, Alberta based company that merges four separate but interconnected businesses."- showing those cynical left coasters how to revolutionise pizza

I might be wrong and they are relocating @ the end of the month.

Sad to see that this great little place is now closed-sad but not surprised. It's a tough business in these parts and the place wasn't turnin' 'em over-hours had been cut back and the place was deserted much of the time. The sign says they 'relocating' but no further details available. Website still up as of this date

He was almost certainly bullshitting. He probably received a low wage as well as subsidised housing and of course free food.

I recall at least 4 Oysters last night in a certain Sushi Bar-they were おいしい おいしい

One wrap that does work and is somewhat Sushi-centric already is a very very thin omelet as done by Tojo's Also mashed yam tempura is used on occasion-quite flavourful.

Bonk has quite a different meaning in other countries........ and as such is something that is rarely avoided-indeed it is often actively pursued

As to Hot Sauces Meinhardts has a decent selection but as always the prices are stratospheric-ditto Urban Fare. South China Seas Trading Company @ GIM has some new products worth checking out. Sadly the new Patel's on Commie Drive has ditched many of it's old lines. -

I've seen that in Greek groceries but for a sure thing there's bound to be an Iranian grocery up on Lonsdale that carries it. -
'Swimming Scallops' Finally On Offer Here-Now!
Sam Salmon replied to a topic in Western Canada: Cooking & Baking
I can see that-most people aren't terribly adventurous.Of course this kind of new open dialogue offers those hide bound earthlings the chance to stretch their culinary bubble. They're rich with a bit more Clam like flavour than the traditional white meaty foot most people think of as Scallop. -
Stopped by Go Fish for lunch today but the lineup was far too long so went down onto the Dock and picked up some Swimming Scallops . These tasty bivalves are a wonderful local delicacy that's little known for a number of reasons. Talking to Ken McGuffie of Quadra Island I got the lowdown on the nascent fishery and how him/his colleagues hope to bring these treats to our attention-much effort over the years has gone into developing a sustainable harvesting regime. Haven't cooked them yet and I won't be posting pics if someone here is at all motivated I'd love to see what people are doing with them.

Thanks for that Keith! It was 10 years ago or so that I was last there and it was 100% Mexican however as we all know 'time has a way of changing things'
-
Was reminded of a decent option in bucolic Blaine WA yesterday-Paseo del Norte- where I've enjoyed decent Mexican a few times. It was too early in the AM and I was leaving the USA so no chance to stop/see what was on offer these days.

Buddy's Farm-GIM Veggie Purveyor-Gone Under!

Thanks for that! Hope Springs Eternal..... -
All I can say is that they are so sweet they make one's teeth ache. As to the Romans well your pal is quite right not just about Cupcakes but our whole society. I have seen seemingly normal people pay enough money to feed a poor African family for an entire year on a barbeque.

It's no mere rumour that the notoriously rich little delicacies now resident on Denman are soon to be found on Broadway near McDonald as well. Not sure of the exact locale but adds for Staff are being posted so it won't be long! Mixed feelings here-formerly I could burn off what I added by cycling over to Denman-soon this will no longer be possible.

Pecan Buns from Quince for brekkie this AM-quality product very tasty.

Well it's official Buddy's Farm is gone from Granville Island Market. IIRC it's closer to 20 than 15 years Buddy's has been there it was @ one time a bustling success and the people who ran it a delight to deal with. I suppose heavy competition (think of all those Greengrocers up on W. Broadway ) plus the always awkward location made them finally pull the plug. Anyone have inside info on what's going in? Just more public seating? The success of a place like Oyama shows there's always room for a smart inspired well funded operator down there. IMO it sure looks like Stuart's Bakery will be next. Anyone remember the lineups of yore for all those tasty loaves? It's been many a year before anyone lined up there for anything and from what I can see few items are baked on site at all. The cases are full of 'standard issue' pastries-which while attractively displayed can hardly be paying the rent on that huge space.

The Vancouver School Board occasionally gives Night School classes in Japanese Cooking. Long ago I took a Sushi making class that was given by someone who was barely qualified-such is the grab-bag nature of Night School classes.
