There are places that smell worse?
-
While in Steveston Village a few hours ago I was Pleased to see a new Bakery opening up. The facade looks much like Kitsilano's beloved Transilavania-wood shingles with flags flying proud-although much larger. The inside is similar as well with a large brick wood burning oven glowing and fresh baked bread on the counter. Imagine my surprise when I found the place Closed! A closer examination found that the City of Richmond has slapped a Stop Work Order on the Germania Bakery for being 'non-conforming'. Click Here for the sad story It's a difficult situation what this historic neighbourhood under siege from developers-the British store/Bakery building is about to be bulldozed for more condos and that's not all. The Good News is that the Owner hasn't given up-as I said the oven is going and fresh bread is almost within reach. Hopefully all he'll have to do is head over to Pacific Net and Twine buy some buoys/manila rope and drape them around in a fire safe fashion. Then there'll be another great reason to cycle out to Steveston on mild afternoons.

Seen this kind of neck on a liquor bottle before?

Indeed! Brought back some Rum from Colombia with just such a device. -
Or soak in heavily salted cold water for 10 minutes first-then rinse well.

Made it to the Wise Hall Winter Market yesterday-all the years I've lived here and never been in the old place. The Market spilled out into the street-as all good markets do-decent weather and lots of familiar faces made for quite the bustling enterprise. Two sour notes though-some vendors had jacked prices as much as 30% over their summer prices for the same product -absolute avarice IMO. Wise Hall itself is a gloomy old fire trap/dump hardly fit for human habitation.

Looking for a source of Cocoa powder-no sugar. The wonderful product someone brought me from the DR is about gone-it's so smooooooth. Hope to replicate it with something unique and soothing. TIA -
Bee Ess! It all depends how many are taken/how fast the stock reproduces. That's because people took as many as possible as fast as possible. In the early 80's fish plant workers were warning DFO that too many small fish were showing up in the plants. The Govt of the day decided to 'err on the side of jobs' and so spawners weren't replaced fast enough-end of story. Agreed! The net has brought some interesting and enlightening POV to readers but the lack of experience shows here-this is no place for the thin skinned.

I've had my Cameron for a few months now-have done Salmon, Prawns and a few veggies. If there's any bitterness at all you are using too many chips. More is not better in the case of smoking. Soaking chips in booze of some variety works well for adding a bit o' flavour-haven't tried the tea/sugar/rice trick bit soon.... As to apt smell I always have a large fan pumping air through the apt and out the window-there's a definite smoke tang the day after even at that. Also if it's fish you're doing it tastes best the next day-cold. The smoker cleans up nicely with a bit of oven cleaner-not quite new but 'presentable'.

Best deals and availability on water?

And smart like tractor! -
The bottom pair are exactly like those I have had for so many years! A package of 12 bought in some long gone Japanese shop here in Vancouver- there are now 7 left. Tough to eat with the larger Chinese style plastic ones after using the wooden ones for so long. Like many others here apart from my oldies I prefer tapered Bamboo.

I get liter after liter free as the air! Drink a couple a day in fact-always have always will. -
Do you know if it's the same Win's that used to be on Arbutus - where Finest at Sea is now? They used to be my delivery place of choice before the fire . . .. ← Definitely the same Folks-had a chance to talk to the Manager today got the whole sad story about what happened after the fire. Anyway they've landed on their feet and lunch today was excellent. A fine addition to the 'hood-ready to give Connie's a run for their money.

WHAT! Please tell me more. Is this just a fun name or is Sake involved. Please tell me the latter is true. Please? ← 100% true but as I said there's a sign, a kettle, some pipework and little else. It's just east of the only restaurant on Railspur Alley. EDIT-OK the name kettle might be misleading-I call it a kettle but it's a large cooker of some sort-many hundreds of liters-not a still AFAICT. Real sake of course is not distilled.

They used to be my delivery place of choice before the fire . . .. ← Dunno-they do know their way around though for a new operation-all the ducks are in a row-as is the live seafood. Give 'em a call @ 604.224.1822/604.224.3944

A long time Vancouver name in the restaurant business is no more. Varsity Grill has become Win's Chinese Restaurant-Authentic Cantonese Cuisine-1909 W4th Had the Spicy Squid last night, quite tasty-done with a fine deft touch. A warm Welcoming place run by friendly happy people.

I wonder if part of the appeal of Zebra milk is because it's high in unobtainium? Zebras are notoriously bad tempered animals who can't be gentled like some wild animals, even bred in captivity they continue to spit bite kick and otherwise act like food critics until the day they die.

An exciting addition to Granville island-Railspur Alley to be exact-is the Artisan Sake shop. Still under construction just a kettle and a few paper signs for now.

Quite agree about Veracruz state-I've dined very well there indeed especially outside the city. http://www.johntoddjr.com/ blog by a long time American resident of Veracruz

Easy to zip from Morelia down to Zihua by bus-the new toll road makes it much faster than formerly. Lots of Zihua info on the net. http://www.zihuatanejo-ixtapa.com/messageboard/index.html Funny I was looking at some old Mexico photos of mine the other day and as always it's the shots you didn't take that haunt you. I'm referring to the Mercado de Dulces in Morelia-a golden memory.

The Good News for Falafel Fans is that there's another place doing great Fafafel. Spice-across from Young Bros Produce on W. Broadway is a vegetarian place run by a couple young Israelis. Excellent prices, tasty food and Yes Pam they have all sorts of veggies items on offer but I didn't notice any cauliflower or fries. Well in truth I was so hungry the Falafel and soup were inhaled in record time.

Drove by last week and wondered if it was an Iraqi place-since Baghdad is in Iraq. Damned few Turks in this town and fewer Iraqis.

I completely ignore any web sites-instead I look to the health of people in countries where Coconut oil is an important part of everyday diet-especially countries I've been to. Without reservation people are healthy as anyone with no particular worries-'nuf said.
