  1. For these, I briefly toasted the coconut first. You were very lucky to have access to a such farmers market. I bet you miss it!
  2. Baby back ribs from The Japanese Grill. The absence of chopsticks or a chopstick rest is intentional.
  3. I really do appreciate your input. But food that is brought into this office and in my experience into just about any office is pounced upon with all the grace of seagulls when tossed your leftover french fries. It is never a pretty sight. Long shelf-life is not a concern.😂
  4. A bonanza of on-sale coconut landed in my house. This recipe uses no flour so it is gluten free for a certain somebody. I also know my son-in-law loves coconut macaroons so they will not go to waste no matter what. Later today I may swallow my pride and try Anna Olsen’s recipe. I will replace the whole purpose flour with oat flour and see how that goes. I love the look of these. They’re not little mountains but perhaps could pass for rolling hills?
  5. Thanks for the suggestion. To me they are very much like biscotti and biscotti is only tolerable when you can dip it in some decent and appropriate wine. 😂 otherwise it’s just scale cake.
  6. Made my day and it’s not even 10 o’clock yet! Thank you.

    Breakfast! 2018

Eating the rainbow. Egg and spam onigirazu, Yellow grape tomatoes and cucumber salad. Black coffee.
  8. Oh Shelby, I’m so happy! and how fascinating to own a windmill. And not a blue one collecting dust on a shelf somewhere.
  9. You are much too sweet. Thank you. Yes my biggest fear was falling. I will find a better way to store my garbage oil until I’m ready to throw it out. In plastic it would not have broken! I used to store it in empty milk cartons but I rarely buy milk anymore. And if I do it does not have the screw cap which is essential.
  10. Thanks. This was unique in that it was meant to prevent spills in the first place by turning the liquid fat into a solid mass which could then be disposed of. I am somewhat aware of products designed to deal with the spill once it’s happened. Thanks very much for pointing out these products. I really hope I’ve come to my senses and will never need one though!
  11. Oh dear lord. No. You need to take some for the team. You got to tell us if it’s half as good as the marketing makes out.

    Dinner 2018

“And the lamb shall down with the lion.” Sorry I couldn’t help myself. It’s been a rough day. Your food looks marvellous.
  13. Thanks. That’s interesting but not very useful for me! The nearest Daiso is in British Columbia according to what I can find out. I think there is one somewhere around Seattle or Portland. Perhaps I could send that @Kerry Beal out there again! There is the store which I visit occasionally out in the Asian area which may carry it. I will try to remember to look the next time now that I know what the package looks like. Thanks again.

    Dinner 2018

Rice with seasoned nori, boned and stuffed chicken leg (chicken Maryland), sesame dipping sauce and sugar snaps and grape tomatoes. And a close up of the chicken dish which I managed to produce while dealing with a major oil spill. The Coast Guard was not involved on this occasion. Stuffed with scallions. I mostly followed a recipe here but once the chicken rolls were steamed I dried them off, brushed them with some oil and put them in the oven at 425°F for 10 or so minutes just to give them some colour. Just an aside. Chicken Marylands (or chicken leg quarters as they are often called) are remarkably inexpensive in my area of Southern Ontario and this treatment really makes them quite posh. Of course you have to be willing to remove those damn bones which is not nearly as difficult as you think it is. Chicken ballotine for novices (or chickens).

    Dinner 2018

All I can say is that somewhere along the line you got exactly what you deserve.😂 Beneath that crusty crust lies some very soft dough.
  16. And the product I was thinking of is Daiso cooking oil hardener on Amazon.com. No longer available. Damn.
  17. Definitely clumping. Light weight clumping and It did a pretty good job. I added more after I took the photograph and also added some ordinary flour to the mixture.
  18. Yes it was sheer stupidity on my part to use a glass jar. I was lured by the fact that it had a nice wide opening. Please, let this be a lesson learned. At one time there was a Japanese product that you could add to used oil which would almost instantly solidify it. Anyone familiar with this?
  19. I suppose one might be able to argue for a “best in class” prize but even then each cheese is unique. Very often it seems each iteration of the cheese is unique. Perhaps that’s why we cheese lovers love them!
  20. Absolutely. I frequently do that myself. I certainly wasn’t finding fault with your shopping skills! There are many products I do not know exist until somebody points them out to me. If they don’t belong on my radar they don’t exist. And if they are on the top shelf or the bottom shelf I won’t see them anyway—bifocals do that.
  21. I will never again, at least not until next time, store my garbage oil in a glass container in a spot where it is most likely to get knocked onto the tile floor. That is kitty litter. You can see the broken glass in the middle there. It took me almost 2 hours to get it to any reasonable state where I would not be likely to slip and fall. That was my absolute biggest fear. And keeping the cat out of it in case he thought it was a new litter box!

    Breakfast! 2018

I do my best creative thinking in the early morning before my stamina is stamped out. Hence: A bento breakfast. Carrot salad, cucumber and apple pickle, radishes, yellow grape tomatoes, commercial chicken nuggets, soy simmered mushrooms and onigiri. I wanted to see if the commercial chicken nuggets are a viable option for days when I don’t feel like cooking, I wanted to practice my rice mouldings skills and most of all I want to give this: a workout.
