  1. I've always loved chicken and dumplings, but I've not been able to eat them since developing celiac disease. But they were never something I could cook worth a damn. I tried dumplings with GF flour, and they dissolved into something akin to wallpaper paste. My regular ones were nothing to brag on, either. I did always prefer the dumplings that were like strips of pie crust, as opposed to the biscuit style, though.
  2. @Smithy Travel safely.
  3. Saw that. I guess people think of dry beans as "hard times food."
  4. I guess, since it seems to be intent on raining forever, I'll garden hydroponically. I think it'll be July before my yard dries out enough to get a garden spot ready.

    Breakfast 2020!

Child C spent the night (and left her child, whom I'll babysit this week as his school is closed), and wanted waffles. So I stirred up a yeasted waffle batter last night and cooked them this morning. Grandson loved them. I may have to make them again this week.

    Dinner 2020

Nothing special, but meat loaf did hit the spot last night. And a baked sweet potato is always good. Green beans as the obligatory green thing. Got the ragu simmering now for cassoulet tonight.
  7. Aldi order delivered this morning. They had everything, including ground beef and milk. I did not order eggs, having three dozen farm-fresh in the fridge. Meat loaf tonight; cassoulet tomorrow, as it's going to be chilly and I scored Toulouse sausages in Little Rock last week. A nice thing that happened yesterday. I have been checking on an elderly lady from church who has no family nearby. I was out yesterday and asked if she needed anythign. She wanted some disinfectant wipes. No luck, in three stops. Put out a request on Facebook, and within 15 minutes had three offers, one of whom took them to her. People are good, generally.
  8. Interesting thing in my grocery world today. Placed an order for Aldi delivery. Typically, when i order early in the morning, I can get delivery by noon or shortly after. This morning's order will be here tomorrow between 11 and 1. Not a problem, as there wasn't anything I urgently needed. All restaurants have gone to curbside pickup or delivery only, and resturants that serve wine are allowed to sell full, sealed bottles with meals.
  9. Awww, c'mon. PJ needs him a burger.
  10. The next thing I seem to face running out of is milk and cereal, but I'm good until the weekend. I'll either chance an early morning run to Kroger, or place a delivery order from Aldi. So far, I've got to say the biggest impact of the virus on me has been no TV sports, and Lord knows when we'll have TV sports again. I'm stubbornly holding on to plans for a trip in late April. But I'm not too hopeful.

Might check and see if they'll do curbside pickup. Most small stores in my area are.

Disclaimer: It was not me. I love cheese entirely too much to attempt to wash my hands with it. And I don't think I've ever been drunk enough to mistake cheese for soap. I just thought it was a good spot to drop in my favorite Lewis Grizzard quote.
  13. I can only think of one of my youngest daughter's boyfriends, when she was in her "thug" phase: Cue earnest voice (I liked the kid, and he liked me). "Miss Kay, don't carry no gun. Carry a knife. Cause people will see an old white lady with a knife, and they'll think, 'That woman's crazy,' and they won't bother you." Once I got past the "old white lady" label, I was pretty good with the rest of it. Think about a knife.
  14. Interesting piece in the NYT regarding how people are changing their cooking and eating habits, here. Don't think it's behind a paywall.

In the immortal words of Lewis Grizzard, "I dont b'lieve I'd'a TOLD that."
  16. Had to meet a client today, so I ran by the liquor store and Kroger while I was out. Luckily the liquor store seems to have no problem keeping my preferred box wine in stock. However, at Kroger, the shelves were bare of rice, dry beans, flour and bottled water. Cereal was low, as was bread. Canned veg aisle seemed to be holding up (all I needed was pimiento peppers, and those are right on the end, so I didn't look closely). And gas was $1.87 a gallon.

A thing of beauty. Make a hash of some of your pulled pork with a cubed sweet potato, and try your egg over that.

Translation, heck. I'd settle for pronounciation guide.

    Dinner 2020

Nothing exciting. Almost the last of the sliced chicken breast from last week's rotissiere chicken. The rest of the chicken will go into a curry tomorrow night. Carcass is in the IP making stock as we speak. Mashed potatoes, peas. I'm feeling the urge to bake...something. Something sweet, I think.

    Spice Storage Ideas

This topic has been dormant for a while, but I had to report a major advance in spice storage at my house. I have spices stored in a couple of pull-out shelves in my pantry. Some are in plastic containers with the name of the spice written on the lid, but the black lids on Penzey's jars had defeated me until I finally ordered a package of white paint pens. Now all my Penzey's jars have the name of their contents on top! It makes me foolishly happy to look in the spice shelf. A good activity for a socially distanced day.

    Lunch 2020

A leftover slab of Saturday's chicken pot pie. (Don't look, @liuzhou!)
  22. Pretty damn good.
  23. Thanks, @robirdstx. That's about what I did, except I cooked the brisket 60 minutes, added whole peeled potatoes, carrots cut in chunks, and cabbage wedges for another 10. It's NPR-ing now. I like my veggies soft with corned beef.

    Dinner 2020

@Shelby -- that's just superb. Great meals from the rest of you, too.
