After grinding some of our venison in to burger last night my husband was craving meatloaf. Spinach and macaroni and cheese to go with.
-
Oh wow! $40 is a lot lower than my google showed. I could do that price
-
Yesterday we drug out the grinder. We use this thing a LOT. I wish I had space to keep it in the kitchen and I bet I'd use it even more. For now, it lives in the basement. Bits of meat getting a bath in the sink to remove any pesky deer hair. Ready for the trip through the blades We bought some cheap hamburger at the store--the kind that comes in those big tubes--to mix in with the venison to give it some fat content. Some years we use brisket if it's cheap enough. We also decided to thaw out a pork butt and use the fat off of it. So, I got a bonus this year--freshly ground pork! That is very hard to find around here unless we make the journey to the Asian Market in the big city. Last time they were sold out! Anyway, Ground pork Ground venison Pork fat/venison mix Beef/venison mix All done for another year We got about 50 pounds of burger. That should last us until next season. Meanwhile, I'm left with these two big ole pork bones and piece of pork skin. Any ideas? Broth? Cracklins?

Hello Deer season is officially over for us here in Kansas. My husband hunted the season in December in which you can shoot bucks and/or does. He only shoots bucks if they are bigger (the racks) than he's shot before. That's a tough thing to do for him because he's shot some big guys. Thus, he didn't shoot a buck this year. He decided to wait until the doe only season in January. We like older, dry does (dry as in they are too old to have babies) because a. they are more tender than bucks b. they don't have little ones that need them. Anyway, he got a doe a week or so ago. It's been very very cold here so we let her hang in the garage for quite a few days. We just cut her up, packaged and made some burger over the last week. I know some of you saw the process in my food blog. You can go there for a more detailed look if you wish I snapped a few pictures and decided to post a little mini version here. I have a little set-up in my kitchen. I used to do this all in the garage and then I got smart. It's cleaner and WARMER in my house. So, my husband cuts off the parts and brings them in for me Backstrap before cleaning off the silver skin and "stuff" Cleaned and cut up into steaks I only use the prime of the backstrap for steaks. The rest goes in the burger bag to be ground up. Here is a hind end. You can make three roasts out of this cut if you wish. I saved the "football" shaped roast and used the rest for burger. We eat a lot of burger. Packaged up

I'm probably one of Amazon's biggest fans. I buy a LOT of items. I like the Prime Pantry option. You fill a big box with the items you want and the shipping is a flat $5. Very worth it for me as I would have to drive a long way to get to the big city grocery store. Plus, I hate shopping--except for the kind you can do in your yoga pants sitting in front of the computer In my subscribe and save I only have Blue Sky sparkling water--I'm addicted to the stuff even though I have a SodaStream which I use a lot too. Oh and cat food. I need to add 3 more items to get the 15% off the entire thing. I get 15% off the water and 5% off the cat food. I'm trying to think of some items that I thought were a good deal. Pine nuts were cheaper on Amazon. I use a lot of those in salads. I'll keeping thinking.

After reading Weinoo's ramen thread http://forums.egullet.org/topic/150411-favorite-ramen-brand-and-flavor/?p=2003486 (someday I will retain how to embed links--C. Sadipus taught me years ago but I've forgotten) I had to test out my purchase for breakfast this morning
-
As soon as I read this thread, I clicked over to my trusty Amazon.com and searched for these noodles. BAM, there they were and I ordered. I'm testing them this morning for breakfast I've never had ramen that came with both the dry seasoning packet and a wet one. I'm very happy with these. Yes, they are more expensive than some, but they don't leave that "oily" feel in my mouth like the fried ones do. Thank you Hassouni!

David--beautiful shrimp and rice. I love green rice. I usually use poblano peppers when I make it, is that the kind you used? Chris--I'm dragging that cookbook out as soon as I get my butt off this stool. Your venison looks wonderful Chicken noodle soup and a toasted cheese sandwich last night

YAY!!!!! We're camping with Smithy again!!!! I will now be able to forget the cold and live vicariously through you. No pressure, but I'm going to need a lot of pictures and updates to do this I just love your camper. We used to have one. I remember what a load of work it was to load and unload. We would leave Friday from work with our loaded camper and come home Sunday evening. Not a very long time to camp, and I liked to have all my food goodies just like you do so it was a lot of taking in and out. The one plus was that whenever we would run out of something at my house (like pasta or some other dry good) we would just go "shop" in the camper and usually find what we needed lol. Whenever I think about camping, I always think of this movie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047191/plotsummary?ref_=tt_ov_pl The Long, Long Trailer with Lucielle Ball and Desi Arnaz. The taking of your cats totally intrigues me. I would be scared to death that my cats wouldn't come back--though I know that my cats would find camping extremely fun. Do you ever have to wait on them to return before you can leave? Do they have indoor litter boxes? The enchiladas look delicious! I will shut up now

It's just a roasted poblano stuffed with a sharp cheddar.

Thanks for starting this, Franci! I bought a spiralizer one or two years ago (there's a post on here somewhere about it). I have only done zuke noodles with it. We LOVE them. My spiralizer was like $20-$30 and it's plastic. I haven't tried any of the harder things like rutabaga etc. I honestly don't think mine could do it. Maybe I need to research and get a sturdier one. Anyway, I will be following along on this thread with great interest. As everyone on here knows, I have a huge pasta addiction. Sadly, I know I need to do better about eating carbs so getting ideas here should help.

Dejah--I have been CRAVING fried fish for weeks and weeks and yours looks SO good. I've got some lovely fish from last summer that we caught and I froze. I just hate the mess I make frying. I'm a messy fryer lol. AND, I hope we get to see a lot of pictures from your Chinese New Year. Gfweb--When I was a kid living high up in the Rocky Mountains, frozen pipes were scary and a PITA. If there wasn't enough snow cover to insulate, pipes burst all over town. I feel your pain. Norm--Your chili looks so inviting. I just made chili last week and now I want it again after looking at yours! Dave W-Beautiful frittata! Huiray--As usual, your dishes are lovely and you always make me crave noodles. I had some venison tenderloin left over from the other night so I made quesadillas. Burned the hell out of one and had to start over sigh.

You will fit right in here! Glad you can "check off" a resolution

I have that book, Chris. You're making me feel ambitious.

Dejah, YAY! Another fellow Christmas decor leaver-upper My husband's b-day is the 14th...maybe I should copy your wonderful tradition! I'd love to hear more about your son in law's sausages. Maybe he would share his recipe some day? Breakfast for dinner last night. I didn't make the smiley face on purpose lol. Boudin, fried taters and eggs over toast

So, I finally had the time to catch up on my DVR today and the last episode I have is the one where Katsuji is shipped off. I need to google to see if I've missed one. I found myself really wanting to taste Mei's ode to Henry David Thoreau. IMO, it will be a little less entertaining without Katsuji. *ducks the thrown rotten tomatoes* Edited to add: I thought we were going to have to throw Padma "honey" in a cold shower during the quick fire challenge.
