  1. I should not have read this thread. I think I will start with chicken fried bacon ala Ms Cross, followed by candied bacon ala me, and if I am still feeling a bit hungry, then jayejo's bacon macaroons. And then a nap. I am so glad there is bacon in the fridge.
  2. I just realized I didn't find much because I spelled it incorrectly. I'm sorry. But please do give me suggestions! It's early for me and this hotel coffee isn't cutting it, obviously.
  3. I did a quick search here, but I didn't find much and I'm about to check out of this hotel and start on my way to Ithica, where I'll end up tonight. Any suggestions for dinner? I'd like to sit down somewhere nice with my husband for a change. And maybe breakfast on Sunday? Totally flexible on price and cuisine (except I don't eat much from the sea) but limited by mostly casual clothes. Any suggestions appreciated.

    Valentine's Day Dinner

Edible underwear. (Just to keep it kinda on topic.)

    Fruit leathers

I'm less than thrilled with fruit leather because I had it pull a filling out of my kid's mouth. And then I had another kid gag on the texture and I was honestly afraid he'd choke to death. I know, I know, I wish I had something nice to say. Maybe only feed it to adults? Or maybe all the kids I know are weird? I dunno. Eat the dang fruit, I say.
  6. My Dad is moving to Calabash, NC. He and his wife are retiring down there and building a house. I'd like to know two things, really...which are the good places to eat; and, is there anything the town is really lacking? We're kind of kicking around the idea of a deli that my Dad can set up and then let my sister run. (My Dad has 40 years in the food industry.)
  7. Well, I appreciate your opinions. I really hate being disrespectful and keeping other people waiting and I feel a little better now. In my job if you keep me waiting 15 minutes the chances are, I'm going to bump you, so my mind set is to get a move on. Thanks.
  8. Yeah, I felt bad...a table for 8 on a Saturday night? I felt really sucky.
  9. I made a reservation for 8 people at 7 pm at a local non-chain restaurant. One couple held us up. When I realized (at 6:45) that we would be 15 minutes late, I rang the restaurant and asked if it would be a problem to hold our reservation. They agreed, and we did get there within that time. It turned out that the restaurant was not overfull, so once I got there, I didn't feel too badly, especially because we made up for lateness with gluttony with a side order of discreet bachannalia, but for that half hour, I was feeling bad. What should I have done? I wanted to slip the host a little something extra when we got there, but I wasn't carrying any cash and my husband told me I was being silly when I asked him for some.
  10. I am wondering if your "sweet starter" is the same starter I had for a while, along with a recipe I got for "Amish Friendship Bread". I let it die not knowing the value of what I had, in my young and stupid days. (Completely different than my old and stupid days, of coure! )
  11. What is "Grandma Style Pizza"? Am I missing out? Grumbling tummies need to know.
  12. I don't care how many blogs or articles I read about fancy-pants latkes made with things like duck fat or parsnips, I have finally gotten it close enough to Nana's that I'm not changing a thing!
  13. This made me think of this ALCU clip.. Ordering Pizza in 2110 On a happier note, I have to say, Fat Guy, you're a guy after my own heart. First the munchos, now this. Able to take one for the team (ordering Domino's..Keeerist!) in order to let us live tech-avariciously through you. Cheers. (And I had hoped to snag your attention once before. Please, as one Munchoer to another, do yourself a favour and try Thou Shall Snack's Latke Crisps.)
  14. I'm enjoying the Domestic Goddess one very much, I found it in my local used book store. Score! I can't get down the stairs right now to compare the sections but when my husband comes home at lunch time I'll ask him to bring it up and I'll tell you how the sections compare, if you like. I'm twiddling my thumbs at the moment.
  15. Hain's does organic powdered sugar.
  16. Yeah, that, all that. Weeelllll, you know, neither of them really sang. Unless they thought it was time to eat and then they let me know they did not appreciate dawdling. My family chooses to occasionally eat meat. I choose, therefore, to procure it in as healthy a manner as possible. It's not a hard stretch for me because I am already making my living in an agricultural business (Jumpers.) I watched the melamine issue unfold..the contaminated Diamond dog food, then fed to pigs, which then went into the human food chain. I posted about it here and got zero interest, which really surprised me. If I didn't have the option of paying the guys to weed the garden and squash the bugs and asking the feed guy to just throw some Pig/Sheep/Chicken Chow on the truck along with the horse feed, vegetarianism would be the way to go.
  17. I am recovering from surgery. Percocet and chicken soup, and peanut butter crackers. Did I mention Percocet?
  18. This is a little off topic, so I hope nobody minds my question here: suppose I'm making a pie crust or something and the recipe calls for the butter to be a specific temperature. I tend to do like others here do, and let butter come up to temp on my marble countertop an hour ahead of time. If the temp of the dough I am working goes over required temp, is there any problem with putting the whole bowl back in the fridge to get it down to the right temp? Or, have I already killed the objective at that point? (Obviously, not after I've added my leavener, whatever it is.) To answer the op from my perspective, (not an educated chef), I have left home gathered, non-washed eggs in a stone ware bowl in the pantry for days at a time. Store eggs I tend to stick in the fridge immediately. I leave both on the counter when doing a day of baking. I don't mess with dairy. It goes from store to cooler to fridge and it stays there when not in use. I will put out a creamer for brunch or something and let it sit, but that's it.
  19. From the guest's side: I have to say this whenever I am invited to a sit down dinner party. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. "I am so pleased you thought of us. We'd really like to come enjoy some time with you. Roy is still easy to cook for but I have had some issues lately and I can't eat very much. I hope that that won't bother you. Please don't worry or make a fuss, I will enjoy every bite I get down and I will enjoy your company more." This works for most people. Some insist on fussing, and I'm grateful but it is not necessary or expected. In some cases, it becomes too much. I don't go back to those places. The only concession I've ever mentioned, and this only to dear friends, is that if there was a soup, I'd be thrilled. If not, heck, whatever. And sure, I am happy to bring it myself, if that suits. I LOVE food, I love to experiement, I love to talk about it, but some things just don't work. In the end, the company is more important than the food and that's what I stress. If the hosts get bent over it, there really isn't much I can do.
  20. I would be grateful if you'd share it. I am flat on my back in bed eating bland foods, mostly, and this thread is making me eager to get the "all clear" from my surgeon.
  21. Wow. So many of you hve such really bad situations, I am so sorry. I guess I am really lucky that at this point in my life, if I don't like you enough to cook for you, I am much more likely to pay for the priveledge of a meal out, so that I can both leave as I like, I don't have to endure you in my personal space, and I don't have to waste good kitchen time on anyone I don't love. That will change as my kids get older I guess but I have no problem supplying teen friendly food, and I like my kid, I should be ok.

    Dinner! 2008

I have been out of commission since Friday, too punk to eat. Tonight my husband made me Cream of Tomato soup with tiny-diced cheddar, and crispy bacon, crumbled. With goldfish crackers on the side.
  23. My kids used to make their own lunches on Fridays at their Steiner school. Veggie soup, with veggies the school grew (with the kids' help) and whole wheat bread. You've got some good lessons there in organic growing, some knife skills in the veggies, learning how to handle a pot of boiling liquid, proofing yeast and kneading, baking. When I cook with the kids sometimes we pick one theme food and do interpretations from different areas..every country has some version of cheese sandwich, and has been fun to watch them all of a sudden play with ingredients they were familiar with. Here's what I mean..my kid would not TOUCH bolognese sauce, preferring meat balls, until we made them side by side. One hit has also been flambe-ing leftovers on the outside grill so they could learn to use a fire extinguisher.
  24. I like the hot toasty pb&j.
  25. This is common in the horse world...menstruating women are not encouraged to handle stallions. A couple of the already mentioned food superstitions exist in my family but here are two I haven't seen yet: every evening I put a small bowl of mlk or cream on the hearth when I go to bed, for the brownies, and; always have an extra place set at the table in case Grace O'Malley the Pirate Queen should come to tea. My grandmother did this with a full place setting...I figure the extra place mat does the trick.
