  1. I believe that at one time the Hampton Inn chain would only build where there was an established restaurant within walking distance of it. The ones we most often saw were Dennys that were open 24/7 .I think they have relaxed that requirement now. Arriving late at night, it was nice to grab dinner and hit the sack before an early flight the next day. Fancy food was low on my list then.
  2. Shelby, I too am an only and I totally agree about sharing. What is mine, is mine but what is your is ours....right? And that includes paychecks as well. I've never worked in a place where the sharing issue came up but I would have second thoughts about taking in my expensive toys to share. Which is to say that Kerry is a much better person than I am!
  3. Trick or treat Smell my feet Give me something good to eat
  4. Oh we wiffit all the time but never had a word for it. ...thanks for expanding my vocabulary! Have a safe trip home and thanks for taking us along on your adventures.
  5. Well I guess that made her an official bitch then didn't it?
  6. My in-laws were farmers and raised beef cattle. In later years, when they had retired from that, they rented out pasture to a friend who also raised cattle, Black Angus. His "rent" was to provide half a steer annually, butchered per their instructions at the local locker. Imagine, eating beef that was raised on grass in your own backyard so to speak. Dream about the steaks, roasts, chops and more. Now dash those dreams, they had every ounce of that wonderful beef ground up and packaged in two pound packages. Dreams of burgers, meatloaf and meatballs just aren't the same. To say my MIL;s cooking was in a rut is saying it all. The cookbook, 365 Ways to Cook Hamburger was her kitchen bible.
  7. Oh yes the woodis eat acorns. Until last week, we had six of them on the pond and they made several trips a day into the yard to eat acorns. They liked them much more then the cracked corn we put out. Funny, people pay a premium for acorn fed hogs Squirrels feast on them too but are still considered tasty. Wonder why they think acorn fed ducks are not as good? . I saw a video of a hunter popping acorns out of a dead woodie's craw. He got 11 from the bird.
  8. I skip the dishes often when we have company. For some reason, my five year old child's brain pops up and tell me not to worry, the dish washing fairy is bound to show up this time. As usual, I'm punked once again. Most of the time, I'm glad I put it off anyway. Seldom have guests but always have dirty dished.
  9. Oh good, a new Shelby Blog. I really enjoy them even if they do give me a big old guilt trip because I'm so lazy compared to you.
  10. I so agree with letting it go. I'll fess up to this....if you sub in the word "fish" for every time Anna has typed bean, there I am. If it swims and has scales I hate it and nothing is ever going to change my mine. Shellfish, good, scaled fish, nasty or better yet. NASTY. I've spent years having people tell me that if cooked right, I would love it. That's just BS so don't tell me that anymore. I'll eat Anna's beans and she can enjoy my fish. Boy that felt good to get off my chest!
  11. You didn't just turn out beautiful food, you made a complete day of lasting and wonderful memories. I wish I had spent more time in the kitchen with my daughters when they were that age!
  12. If that's what is good for what ails me, I am so ready to be "ailed." Just amazing.
  13. My husband was born in the small town where we now live. He never had tasted pizza until he joined the Navy and went to the Great Lakes Training Center. Chicago was hop, skip and a jump away. There he discovered a whole world of new tastes, pizza among them. But as a place to return to, he would pick So. Cal hands down. I introduced him to Mexican food, avocados, asparagus, artichokes, lobster to name just a few. Kind of funny, the only fast food place we have here is a Pizza Hut and it sucks big time.
  14. Shelby, I so agree that he should write that book! I would love to read much more What an interesting life he has led.
  15. I miss going down to the Santa Monica, Ca, pier the day before Thanksgiving and picking out the biggest, baddest lobster there. We took it home and call it "turkey." Like you, fresh seafood springs to mind.
  16. And passing out her chocolate to the judges would make her a shoo-in winner in the talent contest!
  17. If they are that lazy, they are probably too damn lazy to get out of their bathrobes and waddle to a restaurant. They are the folks for whom take out was invented.
  18. At your former place you were able to forage year around and keep fresh food on the menu. Here your time will be limited by the weather. How will you adapt for that? Would you be comfortable serving dried or frozen things you gathered earlier? Seems like you will almost have to rethink your cooking/serving style. The entire undertaking boggles my mind.
  19. Thanks for clearing that up for me. I can't imagine how full your plate must be right now. Hee, hee as a kid I went to many Ram's games when they were in Los Angeles. It was kind of a special deal to go with my Dad. Never liked the game itself and still don't Football is just brutal and dumb to me. Lumpy men bashing into each other..... But St. Louis folks are such huge supporters of the Cards that it is a whole different thing. You're living in a very cool city, from the fantastic zoo to the beautiful botanical center and everything inbetween
  20. Of course he will become a Cardinal fan. I think there may even be a law that you can't own property if you're not a rabid fan Has it been mentioned when those of us who preordered from Rob will be getting our copies? I ordered back in December and am so ready to have a copy in my own hands.
  21. I enjoyed this, thank you for posting it.
  22. Mystery item. Just has to be a prototype for a paper towel/toilet paper holder.
  23. I choose not to support any so called faith based business. That includes the chain of Pizza Ranch restaurants. Looking at their website almost makes me think that they won't serve you until you have said grace. I can't say what their position is on LGBT employees but I have a hunch it isn't good.
  24. I'm going with Carl Sagan who said we are all star stuff.
