I got so spoiled, my MIL had close to 1/4 acre of strawberry plants. Living next door allowed me to pick when ever I wanted. The deal was whatever I picked, she would get half. She and I didn't really care for each other very much. When she rototilled up all the plants, I suspected she did it out of spite. Didn't matter much at all because many of our Amish farm wives have huge berry patches and they do all the bend over grunt work.

My experience with the Driscoll brand has been not all that good. I usually get suckered into buying early strawberries. It seems to me their buyers go for the biggest ones they can find. Yes, lots of eye appeal but chances are most of them will be hollow and juiceless. What flesh they do have under that outer perfection will be white and tasteless. Yet, every damn year I seem to forget how bad they or think the outcome will be different. I'd be much better off grabbing a pack of frozen berries

Of the many lunches you have shared with us, this ranks high on my "want to eat it" list. Everything looks so good. And may I have your liver Tri2Cook? Hee, hee, that sounds a bit wicked doesn't it?

I agree with the idea of special material. In fact, they have already stuck that toe in the water with ones on Asian food and also on meats and on vegetables. I think they have also published a cookbook. I like the on-line version too.

One reason they are so expensive is all the odd stuff, stickers, lift the flaps, fold outs removable envelopes, etc they include. Not every issue has all that stuff but there is almost always something you never expected to find. The early issues are by far the best for that type of stuff. Gimmicks, yes, but still damn creative and not cheap to produce. I've seen the first issue sell for more than $150 on eBay.

I just pulled the trigger to order Lucky Peach #23 so we shall see. Hope it survives but if not, I will have a copy of every issue.

Oh please don't make me choose. Everyone of those just pushed my buttons. On pain of death, I guess I would opt for the trio of sliders but damn, they all look so good. You do food porn photography as well as you do bird photography!

You may be on to something. I like green peppers but one of my kids swears they smell like dirt to her. She's fine with any other color but the greens....no way. I have to ask her to make a sniffing run to her local Subway and report back.

We have two options here..Subway and Pizza Hut. Both are staffed by kids who seem to suffer from raging hormones. As a result of this, getting an order right seems to be impossible. As I'm trying to tell the girl what I want on my sandwich, she notices someone walking by. I'm immediately forgotten as she asks her co-worker if she saw his cute butt? I also notice that every Subway I've been in has the same odd odor. Kind of a musty smell that makes me check out the veggies that are waiting to live on my lunch. Often ask them to skip the greenery. We often go to a Quiznos in a nearby town. They have had the same employees for years and take an honest pride in their product. Stuff is always fresh and the place is spotless. Difference between Subway and Quiznos is day and night.

To be fair, my dislike of canned tuna stems from the nasty sandwiches I had as a kid. My mother's idea of a tuna sandwich was barely drained oil packed tuna mixed with mayo and piled on white bread. This creation sat in my tin lunch box until noon. Eating that and drinking the milk that was always rather tepid from my cheap thermos is not the thing of good memories. That reminded me of another of her creations, something she called a Swiss Miss sandwich. It was equal parts chopped ripe olives and grated Swiss cheese, held together with mayo. Strange, but so much better than the tuna stuff.

Canned tuna is nothing but cat food with a fancy label to try to make it in to people food. Can't fool me!

Okay, I just dug out my Penzey's catalog to see what they had to day on the subject.. They claim their version is "hand-mixed" from China and contains cinnamon, star anise, anise seed, ginger and cloves. No pepper at all. They did stick to five ingredients but adding some pepper would have been a plus in my book.

As to the use of raisins in tamale pie, never did that but I often make picadillo filling. My version calls for 1/2 cup of them to a pound of ground pork. This is a recipe from the Sunset Mexican Cook Book.

I noticed that woot.com has a Breville RM-BEW600XL Hot Wok Silver for $79.99. It is a factory reconditioned model and the order is fulfilled by Amazon.com. Nothing I need but it may be of interest to someone here.

My SIL calls raisins dead grapes and prunes dead plums. Takes away their appeal just a tad. Me? Love 'em all, dead or alive.
