had lunch here today with my friend and her husband(he has cooked at cafe tamayo, the bear, etc. but is out of the business now). no reservations. got there at about 1215 - good luck finding a place to park. there are tables on two levels - probably will seat about 36 upper level, 24 on the lower. the lower level has the bar,. very bright and cheery with various votives around and jazzy, bluesy music playing. we were presented with a drink menu, specials menu and regular menu. they have mexican beers by the bottle as well as on tap, sangria, special drinks(the margaritas included that range from 9-12) and flights of tequila. the special menu had soup, three or four appetizers, three or four entrees. the main menu has about 10 starters, several salads, platos and platos gigantes. prices range from 4 for chips and salsa to 11 fro chile rellenos and several of the starters are also available during m-f lunch as entrees. platas run from buritos and huervos rancheros to flautas, enchiladas plantain rellenos and carnitas. most prices are in the 14-15 range. sides are available and their hot sauces are also for sale. there were six different bottles open on our table. i ordered a dos xx on tap, she had water and switched to club soda, he had a sprite. the water i fear may be city water because it smelled and tasted faintly of chlorine. she ordered the butternut and roasted red pepper soup that was beautifully presented with a heart pattern of mole and creme fraiche on it. i thought the seasoning was perfect though my hosts thought it was undersalted. they applied the shaker liberally - i was right. she ordered the tacos, he ordered the special rellenos which were stuffed with cubed butternut squash, mushrooms, rice and cranberries in a poblano and i got the triple enchilada mole with a small napalitos salad rather than beans and rice. she felt the beef left a greasy aftertaste but three tacos arrived stuffed with meat, queso fresco and lettuce with sides of guacamole, sour cream and jalapenos - which i promptly stole. his chile rellenos were two good sized poblanos liberally stuffed and served with a side of rice and black beans. my enchiladas were chicken and came with the house(chocolate/fruity), raspberry chipotle and spicy verde moles. they were perfect. the salad was grilled cactus tossed with apples, jicama, carrots, pepitos, and queso anjeo served over mixed greens with a tequila vinaigrette. when i go back i want to try the mexican spring rolls, chorizo and the carnitas. total was 63 with tip enjoy it woodburner

there is a small contingent of army and marines here on picatinny. there is no mess here but there is The Club - now for both co and nco's which serves some of the worst catered food i have ever eaten. their restaurant service, Muldoon's, is marginally better i believe. there is also Choices which is the cafeteria offering sandwiches, grill, a pasta bar, salad bar, etc. johnnybird eats there about once every two weeks and says the soups and wraps are pretty good. then there is L'il Skeeters which opened about 2 years ago. how you can do bbq without a pit befuddles me. they do have really good homemade coleslaw and one of the cooks comes from puebla originally and makes killer tex-mex with a bit more mex snuck in. i'm still trying to get him to put menudo and cabrito on the menu

since i worked until 5pm and didn't feel like cooking once i got home we ate out at Plaza Bistro, Sparta. lukewarm bread with butter and a lima bean and rosemary spread. the amuse was chicken liver with onion confit. john thought it was ok. mescalun salad and the duck breast with port reduction, rice with wheatberries, pureed sweet potato and sweet potato chips for me; the salmon carpaccio with mustard cream sauce and watercress then a special of pasta with lumpcrabmeat, small white beans and pancetta in an olive oil and garlic broth. unfortunately there was a large party with two small children who were very loud, running around the restaurant. there were also only two floor staff so service dragged by the time we were ready to have our plates cleared and get the check. by that time also from firing multiple duck entrees there was a bit of a haze and the smell of the duck in the restaurant. perhaps a new exhaust system is needed. total was 60.42 plus tip. overall another good meal think it will be zoe's next time - another 40.00 or so since it isn't byo but...

ohhhh.... invite me for the island theme, please, please, please. johnnybird doesn't like very spicy stuff. i'm home the 13th & 14th then off to visit a friend. since i have to work the 14th think we will have our v.d. dinner on the 13th. i'm planning pom cosmos, salmon tartare, three hearts salad(palm, romaine and artichoke), and by request crab imperial. i figure i will go with a melange of vegetables - green beans, carrots, asparagus and yellow squash and the ever requested chocolate mousse for dessert. hmmmmmmm maybe some tapas for the 14th. shrimp in olive oil, crab puffs, stuffed clams, pigs in blankets(uh...i got to). or maybe burgers(buffalo) and beer. maybe some vegetarian pizza so john can eat on that when i'm gone. course he has a freezer full of tomato soup, lactose free lasagna and some tomato sauce

a lot of times in the winter white rice with margarine and sugar would be our supper when we were growing up. hadn't thought about that in years. hope it doesn't turn into one of those cravings....

Suzilightning, The low prices you quote must have a been a few years ago as our wholesale is around $17 in NJ. It is expected to go up again due to the importer's increases and the Euro vs. Dollar exchange rate!! Phil sorry phil that's within the last 4 months at various merchants i use. since i've started to do some private catering on the side and offer food/wine pairings i keep a strict track of what i paid and what i charge for tax purposes.

northwestern nj have seen this at a low of 13.99(on sale) - high of 21.99 - average seems to be 16 paid as little as 12.79 per bottle as part of a mixed case with a 20% discount we now have a store that is offering 25% discount of mixed cases of non sale items. picked up a bottle of nv laurent perrier rose brut for 44.99
