  1. i went out last year for the first time - or should i say that my mentor went out with me - because i could get him onto guarded federal land and last year was a phenomenal year for all kinds of 'shrooms. joe has been gathering for 50 years and there were some HE had never seen. we came up with a few good messes and i used my portion in a sauce with filet mignon, with scrambled eggs and salmon(johnnybird has developed a taste for this), and joe taught me how to dry them. excellent words of advice - take them. especially about watching out for the turkey hunters IF you are on private land. hmmm...... after last weeks warmth and this week's snow i do think it may be time to take a look see
  2. i can't abide traditional breakfast foods - never could, doubt i ever will. when we would go back to the east end(of long island) my favorite breakfast was flounder fried in rendered baconfat, boiled potatoes and lima beans. this morning i had 98% fat free hebrew national hot dogs and scalloped potatoes made with gorgonzola and coffee
  3. even if he's a tenor??? sorry - i have a thing for men who sing lower than i do(mezzo). looking forward to the blog, k - any don'ts before you perform?

    Dinner! 2004

sounds wonderful, you can cook for me anyday, kris ... and at least your babies have great taste. john has just been diagnosed with psoriatic arthrits and is undergoing therapy that basically has killed any appetite he might have. on top of that one of the side effects of the medication is the possibility of an upper respiratory infection that he developed. i have spent the weekend cooking things that will go down easy, stimulate the appetite and provide the caloric intake and nutrition he needs. AAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH. ok - i'm better now. dinner tonight was an enriched chicken broth disguised as egg drop soup, a small plate of rice pasta with a bologenese sauce and a half a truffle. teas with lemon and honey, french toast, ensure, and a wide array of soups and broths fortified with finely minced veg and meat have made their way to the table. at least it isn't as bad as the time he had the badly infected mouth and the best pot roast i have ever made went into the blender
  5. sorry don't remember lum's. asked johnnybird who was at siena 1972-1974 when he dropped out to hitchike across the nation and ended up in erie. pa but i'm afraid he remembers little about those years - those of you of a certain age will understand i was at u of a 1978-79 for my masters degree and i remember walking down to the factory outlet for freihofers to get those rich, soft, warm, chewy cookies sorry to hear they are owned by the same entity that owns entemann's. i can't eat their cookies - the chocolate really bothers my stomach. just got an email from my friend in catskill. her husband took her to proctors for a show and she was lamenting the fact they couldn't find a decent place to eat in schenectady. any ideas for future field trips?
  6. so glad you enjoyed it.... i really wanted to try the carnitas but those enchiladas with mole are calling to me....and i really want to try the chile rellenos john is on medication and can't drink . maybe he can be the dd and we can try the flights of tequila let us know what they say about the horrid water
  7. i am reading the comics section of the paper this morning and did a spit take. stephan pastis in his strip Pearls Before Swine has explained the meaning of corndogs here: http://www.unitedmedia.com/comics/pearls/ if you are viewing any day other than sunday 7 march go to the comic for that day perhaps he's a lurker?
  8. do not sully RPI my grandfather was class of '20 and was post grad there; wrote a chaper on organic chem that was included in a text having him tutor me in chem was a bitch did my internship at albany public libray; class mate - polly farrington is a librarian at rpi - and would stop on my way back to the dorm for a bag of sliders. we had our own places to hang out - the fountain for jazz and a place we would all go to on thursday night to listen to good blues piano - sorry can't remember the name of the bar-----
  9. Now this is interesting news. The North Country has arrived. Next thing you know, we'll get a restaurant by Jean-george or mario they only put it there because all the kids at siena have nothing better - like us u of a had the white castle downtown

    Dinner! 2004

king salmon with a teriyaki glaze braised kale with bacon and apple haven't decided on the starch - probably a texmati and wild rice jicima slaw - because i want it dessert - for john some of the chocolates he had his mom buy for him
  11. oh my god - i was just reading laurie colwin's "more home cooking" at lunch and it includes a chapter called "the duck dilemma". she suggests something plain or acidic: steamed veg with a drop of lemon juice or pureed butternut squash,. other ideas are cornbread, spoon bread or polenta but not too much of them. some steamed asparagus with a ragout of squash, white turnip and parsnips might be nice.
  12. i lied- johnnybird ran out of toast dope while out of town for business this past week poor man - he had to eat french toast for breakfast this morning
  13. that is about how far we can make it since this is primarily a birding vacation and both these sites put us in good striking distance of hot spots for specific birds to add to john's life list. eating is a secondary pursuit - to him. thanks for all the suggestions, though. what do you know of someplace called fiddler's green. one of the engineers john works with suggested it - though i like the sound of the matanzas inlet restaurant or a1a aleworks.
  14. ok 15 minutes into the bike this morning and it strikes ONION RINGS not the kind that are chewed up and extruded into perfect circles or ovals and coated with crumbs but the ones i had the last time i had onion rings in 1993 - 11 years ago. in a lovely restaurant on the washington penninsula, looking out at the ferries going back and forth to victoria. walla wallas cut into rings about 1" in size, lightly tossed in a tempura batter and quickly fried so they were light, crispy, greaseless and so sweet. the first place i stopped, one of my usual haunts, just had as the new help there said"regular onion rings, you know - like at burger king" - strike one. at the second, another place i feel comfortable going to, they had onion rings made from honest to goodness onion. a buffalo burger and a plate of rings. cut a bit small for my liking and the batter was thicker than i care for. the fryolator needs to be turned up a few degress as well but they were honest to goodness real onion rings. the search will go on... got a tip from a lady the local diner in town makes em the real, oldfashioned way
  15. woodburner how did it go? where are the pictures with you and the band? are you still hung over?!?
  16. kinda like a poor man's cinnamon bun don't know if this is the same recipe marlene's sons' friend uses but it is the abomination someone at work tries to foist on us all the time: http://singleparents.about.com/cs/cookquic...monkeybread.htm scroll past the ad to where it starts with several sleeves of premade biscuit dough
  17. susan i think we may be able to find a 12 step program to help you. though i look at this stuff as a sweet version of curry powder. everyone makes their own and it is unique to each family. actually john came across a formula he had done a while ago and noticed he also had used ground cloves. he's on tdy right now but due back monday and out of toast dope so guess who had to go out to buy fresh citrus and ground cloves?? actually works real well in a mandarin orange and cranberry coffee cake too.... maybe we will be able to exchange bottles of dope when we are in florida next month
  18. the stoned dane - suc fredonia 1973 2 oz. johnny walker red fill the glass with dr. pepper now you know where the name came from(boyfriend at that time was a dane - and one of only a handful of straight men in the theatre department)
  19. GIVE IT TO ME!!!!@!!!!!!!
  20. ah, yes. the nicotine high.... i love the smell of pipe tobacco and cigars but can't smoke them myself.
  21. Heh. Would love to but there's a slight hitch. I currently don't want anyone else, or even a fling. sigh obviously you did not pay attention to the previous suggestions - or i was too subtle hang in there and remember the purple pony is your friend.

  23. you don't need an excuse to drink champagne(or sparkling wine) usually we do tapas but this year john will be seeing deep purple in nyc so i've been invited to a friend's house. we are expected to dress - good thing i didn't give away all my concert black - and throw rolled up socks at the screen when we don't agree with an award.
