  1. this morning the other half of the box of jimmy dean precooked sausages with real maple syrup (the other half having been devoured last night after work - reference the pms thread) and a cup of essensia orange cappaccino. susan - congrats on the egg. when we used to do them at work we used to stir the simmering water so a small vortex was created then, just before it disappeared, slip the egg out of a side dish. father phil said he started the eggs this way because the vortex helped hold the white and yolk together better and kept them rounder. don't know why but several thousand eggs later i'm still doing this...
  2. last night after work... 1/2 package of jimmy dean precooked sausage patties with real maple syrup 2 egg omlet with jalapeno and ketchup cup of swiss miss double chocolate cocoa sigh and it's really good when some of the syrup interacts with the eggs

  7. this is when johnnybird and i actually celebrate our christmas. good bottle of champagne, little bites and presents. usually a dip in the jacuzzi then the next day we pick a spot to go birding. last year was oberly road and scott's mountain hawkwatch. don't know where this year - maybe along the delaware river and the lackawaxen for eagles or possibly round valley reservoir for long eared owls.
  8. yesterday it was my blender... i used a thin spatula, i swear!! but those last little clingy bits of the PIMENTO CHEESE i made just were right for my fingers to liberate from the nooks and crannies of the blender and blade
  9. stopped by the place i usually buy this yoghurt and <grumpy face> since it will blow this reply away if i use the smilies - THERE WAS NO YOGHURT!!!!!

    Prosecco

i agree with katie and love bele casel though here in nw nj we can't seem to find it. i am now sipping on a zardetto brut which should go with our dinner of crabcakes, green beans and coleslaw. i have also been drinking Z which is zardetto's next step up - so to speak- and a bit drier and more elegant than their zardetto... course i also like a good cava and anything else that sparkles ....... hmmm, seems i go after drinkable sparkles rather than wearable ones

    Dinner! 2005

last night a german supper - bratwurst baked in the oven, salad with cucumbers in oil and vinegar, red cabbage with red onion(and a bit of grape jelly), garlic mashed potatoes(ok- i have spaetzle but john wanted mash) and home made applesauce - how hard is that? apples, water and toast dope. tonight, after i wake johnnybird up from his nap and he is hungry - onion and garlic beer soup(over at that soup thread maggie started) there are crabcakes chilling which will be lightly coated with cornflake crumbs then sauteed green beans coleslaw probably a reisling or pinot grigio to go with the main meal - haven't decided yet happy eatings to all....
  12. pam - glad you like the idea since one of the recipes i was sampling was from your book!! 10" of snow on friday, work yesterday and today some light snow showers while sitting here watching the cardinals, juncos and downy woodpeckers have their dinner. it's -.5C so of course - soup! another amalgam - onion garlic beer soup 2 lb of onions sliced thinly and 5 clloves of garlic also thinly sliced. in a pot with olive oil over medium heat until browned - about 20 minutes. add 2 tins of beef broth(im trying to empty the freezer so i can clean it therefore no frozen stock), rinse the tins with water and add that as well as one bottle of Ithica Nut Brown Ale - dark in colour but a lighter beer in taste and i think it will complement the onions and garlic. add a few cloves of roasted garlic from the fridge and few sprigs of thyme. taste - hmmmmmm some salt and white pepper. 45 minutes at a simmer and in about 4 minutes i'll taste again. remove the thyme sprigs serve with croutons
  13. chocolate mousse and my all time favorite - angel food cake batter...
  14. 10" of snow to shovel here so - mixed up a batch of pancakes. cooked them off adding some frozen blueberries and johnnybird has pancakes for breakfast the next few days. turkey bacon. for me a cup of hot cocoa and leftover macaroni and cheese....
  15. plastic drinks glasses - including the I Survived the Flood of 2000 plastic mugs with the full sequence of our local disaster - john's teapot and my containers of parchment paper and sandwich bags that fit perfectly right next to the left side and the stove and a crock of extra implements of destruction
  16. this just reappeared here in nw nj, ant, and i love it. i use it especially to make tasziki to go on lamb burgers. which adams? kingston? they do have some of the most interesting foods there... a gift certificate to adams is always a welcome thing
  17. Thanks for joining in -- I know there were treasures out there. Could you see your way clear and post some snaps. And you are right, I've also got a box of heirloom recipes. Perhaps this could be another thread. Thanks again, Jmahl ←
  18. i inherited both my great-grandmother's recipt book and the copy that she gave my grandmother for christmas 1934. course some of the recipes had to be clarified a bit since we no longer use a woodfired oven. there are even a few entries from my mom such as her pie dough recipe "1 lb. lard, 4 cups flour, salt. squiggle up. makes 2 pies". with recipes like coffee gelatin(my great-uncle can's favorite for holidays), my grandmother's wedding cake and the soft molasses cookies from my childhood i was almost thinking of doing a Julia/Julie and trying to cook through all the recipes...green tomato mincemeat anyone? from john's grandmother we inherited two heavy pottery bowls that i use especially for brining and making things like sauerbrauten.
  19. we really like Gary's Wine and Marketplace and i like a little place in sparta called Burke's Wine and Liquor Store. they only will take cash or check - no credit cards but the owners - especially Randy are very knowledgeable and, though a small store, it is really well stocked.
  20. in downtown dover, new jersey we have Fred's Fish Market which is in the rear section of the building it shares with Dover Pet Store - and yes, they sell fish....
  21. sunday's dinner was an amalgam of several recipes... i had some rosemary chicken sausage that i baked off along with butternut squash. in the meantime i sauteed onions and garlic, added carrots, a bay leaf and veg stock from the freezer. when the carrots were tender in went the roasted sausage and squash and dinner was served.
  22. A lot of people mistakenly believe that the reactor supplies the power to the ship. In truth, it is the coffee bean. Without coffee, the ship would never leave the pier. LOL. We are allowed to take our coffee wherever we go provided it is in a COVERED cup and most spaces onboard have a coffee pot in it, plus the 3 vacuum pots I have on the mess. My favorite quote on this website belongs to jsolomon, "It is inhumane, in my opinion, to force people who have a genuine medical need for coffee to wait in line behind people who apparently view it as some kind of recreational activity. " Speaking of, there is way to much blood in my coffee stream and I need to go get another cup. Please excuse me. ← in grad school we used to have a saying: "Mainline that freeze-dried Folgers" chef- what a fabulous q & a. thank you especially for your service. when you are on leave do you and your wife with or without your daughter have any places in the Groton area where you like to eat? sorry but it is Go Army! Beat Navy!
  23. when i left my job at texarkana public library it was weenies in one jar of grape jelly with one jar of chili sauce. from a former coworker who came to nj from ohio and now is down in the triangle - 2/3 cup bourbon(and jack daniels is NOT bourbon - it is whiskey) 1 1/2 cups ketchup 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 Tbsp onion, grated mix these ingredients. add hot dogs and simmer 1 hour.
  24. happy birthday, tejon!!! johnnybird is fairly supportive - he will eat everything EXCPT lima beans - i LOVE lima beans so eat them when he is not in residence. my in-laws have no clue about cooking, enjoying food or even balancing a menu. i miss my mommy. enjoy all those that are supportive of you and remember there is nothing wrong in filling out the order blanks and giving them to those who would gift you with those "miracle cake molds" - unless you want them...
  25. ohhhhhh.... cute cabrito and i'm sure tasty. funny one of chufi's posts and yours mentioned chioggia beets - maybe johnnybird would eat and enjoy that if i could find them . thank you for blogging and i'm sure some wonderful vege will make their appearances. as far as your homeschooling - do you work with your local library for resources ?
