  1. There was a malaysian place in Chinatown that closed a few months after 9/11 and they had something, and forgive my spelling, called Boabo chacha.. sweet potatoes, black eyed peas and coconut milk... it's still one of my favorites. I do believe Penang sells something like it..
  2. dukkah... it's a middle eastern blend.. they also sell it w/bread out of carts.
  3. I've just mixed in some softened cream cheese, powdered sugar(or brown) and roasted pumpkin---added some cin/nutmeg/vanilla to taste and poured that into a tart shell... baked until it was set--about 15 minutes @ 350.
  4. I've been making a pumpkin cream tart at work and it's been selling like made and it's basically what jay recommended...
  5. I wish I had known that I would have fallen in love with cooking so much in my 20's... I would have fought w/my high school guidance counselor on getting into the cooking vocational program instead of being tracked into the academic/accelerated programs.
  6. Adam, thank you so much for this.. my gf is lithuanian--she's 1st generation here--and she'll love this thread...
  7. maybe showtime or hbo or something could pick this up, make it an hour and raunch it up nice and proper... like it's expected to be...
  8. I make this in the summer w/fresh maine blueberries--organic if we can get them--and both pies sell out that night. I've also found using peaches, nectarines, etc work nice in this... I'm going to experiment next summer w/pineapple and mango. Blueberry Cream Pie 1 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons flour 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 egg, beaten 2 1/2 cups fresh blueberries 1 unbaked pastry shell 9" 3 tablespoons flour 1 1/2 tablespoons butter 3 tablespoons chopped pecan or walnuts Combine sour cream, flour, sugar, vanilla, salt and egg; beat 5 minutes at medium speed of mixer or till smooth. Fold in blueberries. Pour filling into pastry shell; bake at 400ºF for 25 minutes. Remove from oven. Combine the flour, butter and chopped nuts, stirring well. Bake 10 more minutes. Chill before serving. Serves 8. Best of Country Cooking
  9. do cider donuts exist in maine? I grew up eating them from Indian Ladder Farms in Altamont, NY... great orchard--with lines out the door for the donuts that flew back out as soon as they were done.
  10. will there be recipes included? my gf loves bimibap and I'd love to make it for her..

    Pumpkin Cake

for frosting, I'd go with a molases cream cheese frosting that I saw @ epicurious today... just do a google on 'pumpkin cake' it will be one of the 1st ones you see..
  12. if done right.. which means a bit smarter.. this could be the SCRUBS of kitchen shows... it wasn't bad..
  13. oh, jeesh.... silly me... So, we nixed Hugo's because of $$ and ate VERY well at BiBo's Madd Apple Cafe and it was AMAZING! We had: Artichoke and Goat cheese rangoon w/sundried tomato paste Lobster and Crab stuffed Portobello w/ mixed greens and balsamic Bread and Dukkah(which they have just discovered @ my work--to my knowledge--it's just fabulous) Soy Glazed salmon w/israeli couscous Coconut curry shrimp and scallops w/watermelon kimchee and potatoes 2 coffee's Mint chocolate creme brulee Glass of pinot gris 2 glasses of a belgin style ale w/green apple all for about what one meal and 2 glasses of wine would have cost us @ hugo's... and, while I know you really can't compare the two, when you're on a major budget getting every penny's worth and then some is important.
  14. Aurora's is closing? Sharon, from Honey's, told me she had originally looked @ Abby's site.. small friggin town..
  15. johnny... was listening to Democracy Now! today @ work and thought of you and when your blog was going to be up. I opened up the thread and my gf said, "Wow, that's pretty, where is it?" I told her and she just laughed..we had actually been there once before during the early wooing stages of the relationship. And we're actually going to Hugo's this Saturday for our 1 yr anniversary, which I am VERY excited about. Are you still planning on coming to the restaurant this week? Going to hit the farmers market for the blog on saturday? Oh and I stopped by Honey's tonight. Had a good talk w/Sharon--she just rocks.
  16. Johnny, we ate at Honey's last night--again It's so nice that it's just around the corner from our apartment. I had exactly what you had and it's just absolutely the best fried chicken I've had in my life. Sharon is such a kind woman, too and I hope that place is around for a long time. I have been telling any and everyone about Honey's. Steve--Abbey did tell me the name and I know I would bastardize it, but it her partners family's last name. It's located right next to Aurora Provisions on Pine.
  17. trish.. thank you for the suggestions regarding not pushing on the herbs when straining.. I do a lot of cremes for desserts using fresh herbs and was unaware of the mistake I was making.
  18. I add in some goat cheese for my truffles.. roll them in cin, cocoa powder or ancho chile powder...
  19. I had my first 'sassing' at the Hay Market in boston back in April. Checking through some not so fresh produce, he yells at me to not touch it. My jaw dropped and I say "how the hell else am I going to see if any of this is fresh or not." He scowled and we walked away and bought our veggies at several other friendlier vendors.
  20. The Carnagie Deli Ruben frightened me. I think it was eventually eaten later on that night by 3 very intoxicated friends.
  21. i have been by walters many times, but have never gone in... There is a new soul food place up on Deering, just in from Congress street(where the old Stone Soup Cafe was). It's called "Honey's" and I'm telling everyone about it. Thursday night they have Oxtails over White Rice w/Cornbread for 8.95 and I just about started crying when I took the first bite--probably the first time in over a year that I've had it. And, fwiw, the former exec chef @ street and co. will be opening up a place in very late fall in the West End. Definately a neighborhood place, regardless of the price, that I"ll practically be living at.
  22. gee... i don't know.. use judgement--if it's available to you? if you've eaten any of the dish, it's useless to them... so, I would pay for the whole item.
  23. If i had eaten any of the food, I would have paid for what was consumed(probably by just leaving the money on the table) and have walked out without paying for what wasn't eaten.
  24. this is completely random and slightly channeling Alton Brown, but what about using a cauk(sp?) gun?
  25. OK, I absolutely must object here... this woman looked like the quintessencial mafia hooker! No class at all...gimme a break! Piece of a$$, yeah, probably and also probably not too hard to get either. ← Jessica had the cuter girlfriend, with Michaels wife running a very close second.
