  1. So, by the time you get to the ice cream trio, the "scoop" = maybe 1/64th of a teaspoon? ← No, I think it was more in reference to the V-day menu, where it was full meal portions. I think this is to be more in the line of a Hugoesque meal..

  3. johnny... sigh... i need to shut off my phil lesh sbd's(I blame Joan Osborne singing with him) and need to listen to more WMPG..
  4. Ok, everyone... deep breath.... go to your happy places... imagine yourselves eating your favorite dish.... *exhale* We good now or, at the very least, a smidge better?
  5. bibbo's madd apple, right next door, has some damn fine desserts.. or 555 a block or two up on congress..
  6. I guess Fransisco's opened back in August. http://www.franciscosportland.com/ They have a 3 Course/$20 deal on Wednesday and if you sign up for their list, then you get a coupon for a free 4th course. We also had brunch there on Sunday, when it's just the Blue House Cafe and my partner dined on the best benedict I've had in a while. Absolutely textbook hollandaise. Johnny, we had Yosaku on new years day and it made me think of you. I'm getting into the sashimi dining, if a bit slowly.
  7. Oh, jack.. wow.. thank you... My father has been in and out of the hospital for the past month, so I've been focusing a bit on that. Outright banning is the only thing that would keep me away But, I have been keeping abreast on egullet and this thread. But, back to food, right? Fransisco's, out by Mardens on Brighton, was visited on v-day. Absolutely amazing food and experience. the menu selections were: Amuse Bouche Chilled Steamed Asparagus with Chervil Dressing Soups and Salads Lobster Vahine on a bed of Mixed Greens with a Lemon Vinagrette Appetizers Arborio Encrusted Oysters Menage a Foie ( A threesome of seared foie gras, port, and figs) Intermezzo Pink Grapefruit~Champagne Sorbet Entrees Petit Filet Mignon Au Poivre with a Sherry Lobster Sauce Pan Seared Breast of Duck with a Brandy~Maple Pecan Sauce Dessert Tropical Fruit Spring Roll with a Ginger Chocolate Sauce Classic Tiramisu It was my 1st foie experience, which will probably be my last. Too gamey of a choice for me. The filet w/lobster sauce was absolutely mindblowing. The tiramisu, which was not boozy or heavy like traditional preperations tend to be, was divine. And the chef came out at the end of the evening to check on everyone which will always garner points from me..
  8. johnnyd is a st. in the portland dining scene...
  9. well, cockaroaches don't have the PR team that lobsters do.. but, then again, I'm speaking from an extremely biased standpoint because I'm sitting in Maine. Perhaps this is more of an issue of the more zealot animal rights people running out of things to save...
  10. Lobster's rights campaign picks up steam In the United States, Whole Foods Market, the nation's leading natural food supermarket chain, recently announced that it intends to discontinue the sale of live lobsters next summer unless it finds a humane way to transport and store them. "We are viewing the lobster as a live creature rather than a commodity that deserves no concern," said John Mackey, co-founder and CEO of Whole Foods Market.
  11. bintliffs is not a buffett.. and I would, honestly, recommend The Front Room on munjoy hill for brunch. Duckfat? all day duck confit or tuna and fries...
  12. and Linklater is directing it? brilliant..
  13. The pastry chef for Cinque Terre told me that I desperately needed to hit up the Rosemont Bakery and my gf informed me last night that we were going to the Front Room tomorrow morning for breakfast. And Caiola's definately seems to be the major source of buzz around town and i'm already anticipating our NYE dinner there. I've been craving oysters and the chocolate pudding since my first visit. I almost feel that I need to edit the post that started this thread because in the 5 months since it was posted I feel like I've eaten, well, a whole new Portland. Even though I still have yet to eat @ Bandol, Hugo's, Fore Street, 555, Cinque Terre--I feel like I've found many more enjoyable restaurants that won't break my budget.
  14. is this where the blue spoon was or is it still there?
  15. I know there's a boulibase(sp?), but off hand I don't know of anything particularly spanish on the menu. It's definately home cooking w/a tweak that both abby and her sous chef, who also worked at street and is amazing, can add just enough of and completely blow you away with.
  16. i went there about a week ago or so and it was wonderful.. had the sirloin w/balsamic butter w/kale and stuffed, roasted squash. Also, had the caesar salad w/fried spicy oysters--minus the salad.. and they were perfect. I brought home the hamburger w/housemade tater tots home for my gf and they were awsome. Homemade chocolate pudding was both delicious and nicely presented. It was more than reasonably priced and I can't wait to go back!
  17. johnny, you rock... we've been debating about trying there...
  18. That's awsome... I'm so happy for you!!!
  19. if you feel like traveling.. there is always the NH Liquor stores..
  20. the uproar is insane if it's directed at him... yell @ the tv station/censors for letting it air if it's a problem..
  21. It's for a friend.. I would offer to make it for her if I had the time.. but, 2 cooking jobs and a third non-kitchen one takes up most of my time. I'll pass along all info... thanks again..
  22. i appreciate the help so much... but, we're in maine.. i know of know whole foods... fairway.. balducci's....
  23. Its not that hard to make. For most applications you can use quick puff. Woods ← yea.. i suggested... she said she'd rather avoid the impending doom if she attempted. W&S is the only place i can find it so far..
  24. A friend of mine asked if I knew anywhere in the US that would ship it. First thought was to come here and ask. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx.
