  1. My first and best memories of slurpee's are of growing up in Ft. Lauderdale. A day at the beach with my parents always included a stop at 7-11 on the way home. ( same with trips to Sanibel Island). To this day, a beach trip isnt complete without a slurpee afterwards. This worked for me when I lived in Long Beach, Ca, but doesnt work now as the nearest 7-11 is in London, ON. Oh well, Im sure its a lot healthier for me, if not as fun.
  2. My best memories are all the "jewish" foods my mom made. Blintzes, noodle kugel( sweet), brisket, matza ball soup. Ive never had better than my moms.
  3. what are the correct pronunciations of: Ragout. I think its RAG OOT And, Chevre Is it Chev Rey? My friend said it was Chev RA and I laughed. Id hate to think she was right.
  4. Yes, I planned on making that recipe. If you could bring the pan, that would be great.
  5. re: the brownies. i was just looking over the recipe and it calls for a baking sheet that is 12 x8 x 1. Does anyone happen to have one of those? I have a jelly roll pan, but I think its 15 by something.
  6. I was pie crust phobic for many years until I found the cuisinart. I also just found this recipe that makes a really good hearty crust. I recently used it for a swiss chard and goat cheese tart. Oatmeal crust 1/2 cup each whole wheat flour white flour regular oats 1 egg yolk 1/2 cup butter cut in small pieces 1 tsp salt 1-2 tbls water( might not use) process flours and salt, add eggs and butter. Add water thru feed tube until dough comes together. Form into disk, wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 min. Makes 1 crust.
  7. I dug thru my recipes and found it!! Yay. Anyway, I love these. This is from an article in Glamour mag( 1993) Author: Jany Kirby RD 2 cups flour 2 tsp powder 1/2tsp salt 1/2 cup butter( softened) 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1/3 cup milk 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries Oven to 450. combine dry ingredients in bowl, set aside. cream butter, sugar till fluffy. Add eggs one at a time. add flour and milk, mix until well blended. stir in blueberries. sprinkle tops with sugar. bake 5 min, reduce heat to 375, make 30-35min. makes 12 medium or 8 jumbo. I've also made these in mini loaf pans. So good. Rich and buttery. Enjoy.
  8. Thanks, My friend is coming over tomorrow night to do some cooking and she's stopping at the LCBO in London beforehand and bringing me the Fonseca.
  9. Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, I have to cook this food tomorrow in my podunk town of Exeter. We have one LCBO here and they carry hardly anything. Maybe Im doing something wrong on the LCBO website, because I looked at a few ports and all of them werent in stock. I'll try an advanced search and if I cant find anything. I have a amontillado medium dry sherry in my cabinet. I think we have some sangiovese too. We're going to the Heartland Gathering next week so we can bring some port back for next time. Thanks for the help Oh and I'm not allowed to drink any alcohol at all. Im diabetic.
  10. Today I got my first Personal chef client(whooooo Hooooo). For one of her dishes she picked out Pan seared pork tenderloin with dried cherry port sauce, onions and marmalade. Sooooo, I did a search at LCBO.ca( liqour control board of Ontario) for a nice inexpensive port. Unfortunatly, everthing that is reasonably priced is sold out. I dont want to spend 30 bucks( or even 20) on a bottle I might never use again. What is a good substition for port? Thanks for your help
  11. My favorite blueberry muffin is from a very old issue of Glamour magazine. The authors mother got the recipe from the old Jordan Marsh department store cafe. I cant find my copy, but I wrote to glamour today and they are mailing me a copy. I asked them to email, but they cant.( never heard that before). Ill post it when I get it.
  12. Should I even touch that with a 10 ft pole? Did you ever hear that cliche about how California is the land of fruits and nuts? Funny story. Picture this: my first xmas morning with my spouse's family . I had just received a big basket full of exotic fruit scented bath products from my spouses cousin. I scooped up the basket and said " Im off to take a shower so I can smell like a big exotic fruit" and my MIL said " Well, Randi, isnt that what you are"?( referring to the fact that I'm a lesbian from California). It was one of the funniest things she's ever said.
  13. We're looking at a 7:00 dinner, so if you drove 200 kph and bypassed both tollbooth and Customs, I think you could make it. How long does it usually take to drive to your friend's place in Chelsea? ← Well, I usually stop in Port Huron, get gas and my mail and then I'm on my way. I think from my house to my friends is 190miles. Robin just informed me she has a meeting and has NO idea what time that will end so it looks like we wont make dinner. Darn it!!

    Dinner for 40

Hi Tammy, I know you're a big fan of CI( as I am). Have you tried any of their other recipes? Specifically the chicken enchilada's or the chicken with 40 cloves of garlic?
  16. Did anyone bbq ribs for the Holiday weekend? It was Canada Day yesterday, perfect time for grilling ribs. I dry rubbed them on Thursday with my version of Cook's Illustrated's rub. I wrapped them in heavy duty foil and refridgerated them until Friday afternoon. I baked them for around 1 hr at 350 and them grilled them for about 7 min each side. I used the South Carolina BBQ sauce recipe posted upthread. They were fabulous. Everyone raved.
  17. Oh Lord, here we go again. ← uh oh, did I open a can of worms?
  18. Forgive my ignorance, but what is the difference between eastern and western bbq?
  19. As I said upthread, Jefferson Market is my favorite place to eat in all of Ann Arbor. It's an odd little place - located in the heart of a neighborhood in Ann Arbor's old west side, right across from an elementary school, it's part five and dime, part corner store, and part gourmet kitchen. Seating is very limited, which is why I'm trying to get a sense of numbers, but it looks like we should be okay. Here are a few selections from a recent menu: Indonesian Coconut Curry Seafood Stew with shrimp, mussels, squid and salmon, sweet potato fritters, sunflower sprouts and sauteed spinach. ($15) House-cured roasted 1/2 chicken with fresh herbs, savory lentils with goat cheese, sauteed greens ($13) Grilled salmon wrapped in grape leaves with tomato-pinenut-currant sauce, couscous, grilled asparagus, summer squash and red pepper ($13.50) The menu changes every two weeks, but there are a few things that are always on it, like: Beef brisket pot roast, pan gravy, horseradish cream sauce, glazed carrots, garlic mashed potatoes ($13) and the best burger in town ($6) It's casual, quirky, and the food is completely not what you'd expect from the setting. They use a lot of local organic produce and all their ingredients are top notch. ← That sounds fabu. Im going to plead with Robin to see if she can get off earlier so we can make it. Maybe if we leave by 4:30-5pm, we can make it. I just dont know with Friday traffic.
  20. You can also get a Cuisinart at Bed, Bath and Beyond. Ask for a 20% coupon and the price comes down to 40.00. I have about 10 of those coupons, if anyone wants one. PM me your address and I'll mail it out.
  21. Here was our dinner tonight. This is my spouse's plate. Turkey burger made with half dark, half breast meat, sauteed celery, garlic, a spice blend, fresh chopped herbs, a small amount of panko and an egg white. Served with homemade pickles, orange and honey mustard, light mayo, red leaf( homegrown) on an ancient grains roll. A variation of CI's macaroni salad on the side.
  22. *raising hand*, I totally get it. I have 2 dachshunds( check my blog for pics) and they are my fury children. I couldnt love them any more if I birthed them myself!! Btw, fascinating account of your first month. I love SF, I've had great meals there, dont remember if I ever had anything from your place though. I'll make sure thats on my must go to places next time we go to SF.
  23. Smarties? These? If so, I beg to differ on their Canadiality. Canadianity. Canadianess. ← wrong smarties. When I first moved here, I was confused too. The smarties they are talking about are candy coated chocolates, kinda like the plain M & M's I think smarties are a bit flatter and they come in different colors.
  24. Hawkin's cheezies Oh and does anyone else put bacon in their cesaer salads? They do here in Ontario and I still find it kinda odd.
  25. Your kids are adorable and the pancakes look so light and fluffy. Can you post the exact recipe?
