Here is the recipe I made. CL calls it a cranberry chutney. Here is my adaption of the recipe. 1 cup sugar 1 cup water 1/2 cup port or other sweet red wine 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 1/2 cup dried tart cherries 1 (12-ounce) package fresh cranberries 2/3 cup chopped walnuts, toasted 1/2 teaspoon grated orange rind 1/4 teaspoon almond extract Orange rind strips (optional) Combine the first 4 ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Add the cherries and simmer for 1 min. Add cranberries and simmer until they pop( about 10 min). Remove from heat, stir in the walnuts and orange peel and extract. I made this yesterday and has a nice flavor. Lucy, I hope you can find some fresh cranberries. Enjoy.

Yeah, but don't you get to celebrate Thanksgiving twice? ← I suppose technically, but my spouse and inlaws dont really care about canadian thanksgiving so they just haphazardly throw together a meal and eat it on the Saturday or Sunday before the Canadian Thanksgiving Monday and call it Thanksgiving.
-
This thread made me feel sad cause I'm not even in my own country now and while I'm cooking an entire Thanksgiving meal, having it with Canadians isnt the same. ( feel free to ignore me, I'm just feeling sorry for myself) Randi ( yes, another Randi)

I'm so glad to see expat's making Thanksgiving. My first year here, I didnt bother with Thanksgiving and I found that I really missed it. So, this will be my 3rd time hosting a dinner for my Canadian inlaw's and friends. I know of no better way to introduce them to the ubiquitous green bean casserole( actually, I decided to not make it this year and instead I am making the entire meal from Cooking Light). Lucy, do you get fresh cranberries in France? I actually made some cranberry, cherry walnut conserve and I am surprised how easy it is. I cant believe I've never bothered making cranberry sauce before.

Great blog so far. Your last blog was one of the first ones I read when I came to OD. You were an inspiration for me to start a PC business. I'd vote for the Norwegian town. Or Mario's new cookbook. I really like watercress, It adds an interesting peppery note to a salad. I recently made a salad with watercress, roasted beets, goat cheese, red onion, orange segments and toasted pecans. Yummy. Btw, my boys love their peanut butter bisquits too. edited to add that i have that mini cheesecake pan too and I love it. Perfect portion control desserts. Have you ever done any regular type cake recipe's in there? -
I bought some this summer at SLM. If I remember correctly, I got them downstairs.
-
I wouldnt because 1. I can't afford it. 2. I only eat white meat 3. I live in Canada and my spouse and inlaws dont really cares about American Thanksgiving even though I celebrate it. 4. I just paid 39cents a lb with a 10 dollar purchase at kroger in MI and shleped it back over the border. ( regular frozen turkey's are 1.99lb here).

If you have any TJ Maxx's around you, check them out. I bought a 4 1/2 oval for 40 bucks( clearance)

We ate here based on your review and we thought it sucked. We had two appetizers, calamari and lobster quesadilla. Both of them werent that great. My spouse had the grilled ahi salad. The ranch dressing that came with it was horrible. I had shrimp scampi( that dish was just ok, there were 7 nice large shrimp though). My friend had grilled mahi, another friend had a seafood pasta. Overall I would rate this place no better than a chain restaurant.

I've tried these and I thought they were way too sweet. Especially if you use a commerical peanut butter.

I used some of my frozen shmaltz today to make( in my humble opinion) the best use for shmatlz Jewish Penicillan. I'm happy to report that the matza balls were light and fluffy.

Ok, I bought some boneless skinless breasts( now no comments because i hate dark meat) and they were on manager's special at Meijer for 99cents a lb. The expiration date was the following day. I needed them for 2 days later so I froze them for one day. Does this seem strange? I defrosted them a day later and used them. Are they still good? Is the expiration day really set in stone? I took out two packages of them and only ended up using one? Should I just toss out the other package or can I use it the following day?

Oh, do it! While I'm sure the potato kugel is amazing, I'm thinking my favorite kugel wouldn't hurt from a hit of shmaltz. Cook down a couple of onions, until they've started to caramelize. Through in a bunch of thinly sliced mushrooms, salt and black pepper. Cook until the liquid from the mushrooms has been released and started to evaporate. Toss with egg noodles and eggs (also good is a little leftover brisket juice),into a greased casserole and bake until golden and toasty. ← Since you posted this on my food blog, Robin has been begging me to make it. I think its in the cards this weekend.

Maggie, you just gotta go with it.... Here's my favorite shot from my own blog, the filth of which I didn't recognize until I had posted it. Let they who live without sin cast the first dolsot! ← Dont feel bad, check out this monstrosity from my blog. After I posted it, my spouse said " I can't believe you posted that picture". I said " oh well, they're just here for the food" -
Im curious, how long does schmaltz last? I have some in the fridge from about 6 months ago. Do you think its still good?
-
I think I overbaked it too. I used the mascarpone in place of the cream cheese. I made a second one and I underbaked it slightly. It was perfect except that it still cracked when I rolled it.
-
I decided to make the libby's cake today since I had some mascarpone I had to use up. First, I was curious about the lack of fat in the cake. Next, I was too nervous not to use a towel( sorry wendy). I rolled the cake up as directed and then unrolled to spread the filling. The cake cracked( as you can see). What did I do wrong?

Here is one I made about a month ago. I made it so that it would be Weight Watcher friendly. I use ground turkey( breast meat), crushed tomatos, onion, peppers, barley, chili season mix, and beans. I never follow a recipe, so it tastes different every time.

vanilla prices have come down considerably. I just ordered 1/4lb and 1/2lb of vanilla beans from ebay( seller: organic vanilla) for like 12 dollars for both( including shipping). The seller will ship to canada too. I make my own extract with bourban or vodka. There is a huge vanilla bean thread( i started it) in the pastry and baking forum.

I almost wish it was a lemon juicer( although I have a few of those). It seems rather tedious to crush one ice cube at a time.)

Richard is right. I have two pieces of LC. The first, a 4 1/2 blue oval I bought at tj maxx for 40 bucks. It was reduced numerous times, its definatly a second( has a ding on the bottom) but works well. My second( my baby) was a 7 1/2 round red that I got at Amazon on a friday sale. It came with a skinny stove top grill and i made 114.00 ( used a 25$ off coupon). I also have a staub small round cast iron( not enamaled) that came with a trivitt. Bought at tj maxx for 16 bucks. That was a true bargain.
-
This intrigued me. Cant figure it out. Someone said lemon juicer, but I dont think so. Its made in Germany. I paid 5 cents.
-
I bought some new empty paint cans at home depot for 1 dollar. I just checked out the container store's website and they have a lot of cute things. Check out the 1/4lb kraft coffee bags for 30 cents. Lots of cute take out boxes too.

You mean by signing up for the credit card? Nope. ← no, not the credit card. if you spend over 125 in housewares, you get 25 off. ← I tried. LC, All-Clad and most other useful stuff is excluded, unfortunately ← No, LC isnt excluded, I got my 25 off and I bought a 7 1/4 qt.
