  1. green bean casserole. Canned mushroom soup and french fried onions. LOL NOT seriously though, when I need a chocolate cake, I usually always make Hersheys Black Magic cake. Moist, chocolatey, one bowl and fast. Always gets rave reviews.
  2. Well, I went back and it was there. I bought it and they had a lot of others on clearance. I got the 4 1/2qt oval for 40 bucks. I saw some round ones for 56 and 60. It's definatly a second and it has a small hole on the bottom, but it doesnt go all the way thru. I guess thats why it was so cheap. Now, what else can I make it in besides red meat? We dont eat red meat, but we do eat pork, chicken and fish.
  3. I just wanted to add that today I received 2 mexican beans. I asked the owner if he could send me a sample so i could compare and he obliged. Im impressed with the customer service. The beans werent wrapped and they smell fantastic. I believe some vanilla ice cream is in my future.
  4. Its over?????? awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww Thanks for the glimpses into your culinary world.
  5. I started that vanilla thread over at pastry and baking because I was looking for reasonably priced beans. If you can do a mail order, this seems to be the way to go. The price has even dropped since I ordered.
  6. Hey, I was there today too and no one offered me any chocolate. I picked up and looked at all their chocolates, but I concluded that they were overpriced. I did buy some chesnut honey and some dulce de leche( all overpriced as well). I had a really good sannich too.
  7. My beans arrived and Im itching to do something with them. Where would I find the above recipe? 12 beans? wow, have you tried it yet?
  8. How about little cherry crumb tarts? With a tiny scoop of cherry garcia ice cream on the side? Yummy. Or, I would personally prefer cherry crepes, to me the best part of pie is the filling, I always skip the crust.
  9. Do you know what issue it is in? I make CI's coconut cream pie all the time, I really love that one.
  10. I love Cook's Illustrated. Everything Ive ever made has been fantastic. Coconut cream pie, a chicken green bean and mushroom stirfry and a fantastic way to prepare brown rice have now been added to my repetoire. I used to love Gourmet when Laurie Colwin wrote for them. Her writing alone was worth the price of the magazine. I like Everyday Food and I also enjoy Cooking Light. More so for the main dishes than the baking.
  11. Ok, I went back to this site and now the same amount of beans is 24.75. Whats up with that? Has anyone received their beans yet?
  12. I've tried a few. The last one I tried was in Amanda Hesser's book " cooking for mr. Latte". It was unremarkable. So, what do you have????
  13. I entered this cake in our county fair last year. I took 3rd place only because the judges didnt like the orange in the frosting. Its a very "different" kind of carrot cake. Very dense and there is a lot of stuff going on here. A friend of mine gave me the recipe years ago and she called it Blue Ribbon Carrot cake. I lost it and did a web search for it and I found it online in the Portland Junior League cookbook.
  14. Anne, Id love to see a pic of your finished cake, it sounds fabulous.
  15. Do you have to pay duty on food?
  16. Hi I did some of the food at my wedding and I also made a cupcake tree. I followed the dimensions on that site and we spent a weekend, cutting circles out of huge cardboard refridgerator boxes. We made double layers and taped it together with duct tape( is there anything you can do with duct tape?) I covered the layers in green fabric and then used an irradecent green tulle over the top. I baked 300 cupcakes and froze them. I made all the fillings 2 days before. On the morning of the wedding, 4 friends and myself filled and frosted them at the reception hall. It was a lot of work, but Im glad I did it. I needed to have the control over the food aspect. Everyone raved about the cupcakes. I hired a man who smokes meats and he came with his smoker( a train caboose converted into a smoker). I served chicken with bbq sauce, potatoes, corn on the cob, a huge mixed baby green salad with vinagarette, my MIL made her famous coleslaw, I made a huge whack of baked beans( they cooked most of the day while we decorated) and I ordered rolls. For my favor I ordered chinese takeout boxes and small ziplock bags( all from ebay). I labeled the bags 1 and 2. In the first bag I mixed up chicken brine and the 2nd bag was a spice blend. I wrote out the directions and added a clipart chicken image and cut them all out and included them in the bag. I also ordered labels for the front. I can give you a picture if you want. We tied a bit of ribbon on the top. They were absolutly fabulous( if I do say so myself) and I've heard people actually used them. Good luck. Dont stress yourself out too much.
  17. "How did you get the shipping included in the price...assuming you are getting it shipped to Canada" Hi, I buck the system and have it shipped to my PO box in Port Huron, MI. I wont declare it when I cross back because its food. Food is tax and duty free. I usually go to Port Huron once a week and I often do grocery shopping there. Since I'm American, I still have money in US funds. Chicken is so incredibly cheap in MI so I usually bring back a lot of that.
  18. Why should we put more money in Heather Reisman's pocket anyway? She has plenty enough as it is. Mark ← Ok, forgive my ignorance, is Heather the owner of Cookbook store? Personally, I prefer to buy my books thru amazon or ebay and have them shipped to my MI Po box. I go over there once a week, can throw them in my car and Im not subjected to 15% tax and the inflated exchange rate. Im American btw, so all of my money is still in US dollars.
  19. Just an FYI. Check out the latest issue of Cook's Illustrated. There is an entire article devoted to cocoa. If Im not mistaken( I just glanced at it) the callebaut was the winner.
  20. I really love waffles made with this waffle mix. They are light and fluffy with a really good mouthfeel. I bought the mix at Willams Sonoma
  21. No, it was closer to the edge and it was somewhat raised. The lid was inverted and taped down so Im not sure of the size. It was fairly big though. Ill report back next week.
  22. Ok, forget the chicken skin, Im drooling over the fabulous kitchens you designed.
  23. so has anyone cooked with the 12 inch skillet? 19.99 or the cheaper version. 12.99?
  24. yeah, well hopefully it wont be wishful thinking. Its a rinky dink town in MI and there doesnt seem to be many people there that look like they use or can afford that pan. I know that sound snooty, but its true.
  25. I was in TJ Maxx today in MI and I saw an blue oval( 5qt?) on clearance for 40$ It was marked seconds. I turned it over and there was a weird indentation on the bottom. I didnt buy it because I was driving back to Canada and I was already worried about what I did buy. Ill be back there next week so I might pick it up.
