I also notice a lot of the measurements are in pounds. I like that. Even after 2yrs living here, I still have a hard time with the metrics.

I love St.jacobs too, we are about an hour from there. We'll be taking everyone there in my upcoming food blog. Can you tell me more about St. Lawrence? Is it open everyday? *wondering if I can make the trip up to TO and back home in one day*

Hi Tammy, Im reading with interest too because even though I live in Canada, I do spend a lot of time in Ann Arbor. I have friends that live in Chelsea and make the pilgramage out about 1x a month to eat at Zingerman's( of course). ( I saw that cheese tasting in the newsletter, but the timing was all wrong, as I'll be out there in 2 weeks. ) I also adore the Whole Foods and Trader Joe's( although I really miss my TJ's in Cali). I've made those spring rolls many, many times. I usually make them in advance myself because I found I had to use very hot water in order to soften them. I'm cooking a lunch for my partner's meeting on Friday and I decided to do a large taco salad. I'll present the plates with a bed of chopped lettuce and I'll let everyone assemble their own. I'm going to use ground turkey, roasted corn, black beans, chopped cucumber and red peppers, scallions, salsa, sour cream and avocado. Oh and of course taco chips. Hopefully, this will go over well. Looking forward to reading more of your blog.........

Australian vanilla beans...
CaliPoutine replied to a topic in Australia & New Zealand: Cooking & Baking
I bought a quarter pound of beans from www.saffron.com and I paid 26us, shipping included. The price has now dropped down to 24.75. I started a thread a few months back and a few ppl ordered them and we happy. I thought they were a little on the small side and not that moist. I always say " you get what you pay for". I shoulda listened. I dont use vanilla that often so they are ok for my needs. If I was using them at work, Id probably want a little better quality. -
I do have some frozen, In fact I have 2 one quart containers just in case Im craving some matza ball soup. However, I put some in the fridge, because I thought I read some where that it keeps "forever" in the fridge. I boiled it up, tasted it and promptly threw it out. I defrosted 1 quart and made some fabulous risotto mushroom, pea and shrimp with parmesean reggiano and lemon oil. Yummy!!

Im about to make risotto and I pulled some jars of homeade stock from the fridge. I made these about 2 months ago. Is the stock still good?

screw Ontario, I wanna live in Vancouver!!! ( that is, if I cant live in California) -
Sarah, I tried your low fat recipe and they were fabulous. I added some cinnamon, raisins and dried cranberries. I couldnt tell they were low-fat, they were so moist and delicious. Thanks a lot!! Now, would you possibly have a low-fat corn muffin recipe?

So does this mean Im not a member of the gourmet subculture? I grew up prefering dark meat, but my tastes changed as I got older. And quite frankly, legs just gross me out. All that sinew and whatever else its called on the leg. Ick. I dont eat red meat either, so maybe that has something to do with it.

Im not a beer drinker so thats probably why I didnt like it. It did have a strong beer flavor and not a very strong chocolate taste at all.

I used Drost.

Is this a "mock" chocolate cake? I don't see any chocolate at all in your recipe. ← whoops, it also has 3/4 cup of cocoa.

I have the same KA and I hate it. It doesnt even have a pouring lip. I think its time to write customer service and see what they can do.

I'll have to disagree with you on that. I hate chicken thighs, and my chicken breasts always come out flavorful and juicy. ( brining is the secret)

The one I made had 2 cups of sugar, 1 stick and 2tbls of butter ( 1 stick= 1/2 cup), 8 oz stout, 2 cups flour, 2 eggs, 3/4 cup sour cream, 2 and a 1/2 tsp baking soda and vanilla.

I made this tonight along with the frosting. It was easy to make on top of the stove and it smelled great as it was baking. I also made the frosting to go with it. Your basic cream cheese with some heavy cream to lighten it up. Now, for the taste. I cant describe it other than weird. It wasnt particulary chocolaty. Im not a beer drinker so maybe thats why I didnt really care for it. MY SO didnt really like it either. Ive heard rave reviews though, so Im wondering what you all think.

well, i didnt make it because I wasnt sure about the ww flour. Maybe I'll wait till Dorie has a lookie at my post and can advice me. Thanks

If I remember correctly, citychef is owned by an egullet member. I doubt she'd want that posted either. Oh and if you have any friends in the states, you can always order from amazon and have it sent there. I really love the circulon I have and the prices were fab. Ive also bought some wonderful calphalon from amazon too. The best deal was a sitram fry pan off ebay for 32 bucks.

I think Im going to make the pizza dough today. Id like to sub some whole wheat flour for part of the white flour. Do you all think I can do this?

I think its the water in NY. Pizza, bagels, soft pretzels. They just are not the same anywhere else. ( Even Florida, where half the population are transplanted NY'ers)

You could always drive over to Buffalo and stock up. I drive 66 miles to Port Huron, MI a few times a month to stock up on things I cant get here. Diet Cherry Vanilla dr. pepper. Hershey's cocoa, chicken breasts( cause they are way cheaper), etc, etc. I check the weekly ads for both grocery stores in that town and plan my trip accordingly. Groceries are duty free as well!!

Im curious, did you ever try the black magic cake from Hershey's? That is my all-time fav chocolate cake.

This is going to be really interesting. I went to college( cal state Long Beach) when I was 30 and I actually lived in the dorms. I had the full meal plan and I was in constant contact with the food service director because I was a foodie even back then and I didnt eat red meat. I think they liked to see me coming( or maybe I just thought that). I requested grilled chicken breasts, low-fat cheese, 100% whole wheat bread and low sugar ice-cream. The director ordered all these things for me. I stayed in the dorm, but I left on the weekends and stayed with my then partner at the time. I was able to cook on the weekends and have my meals prepared during the week which I found super convenient. Awww, the good old college days. Now, as much as I love to cook, I do 100% of it. Id love it if my SO picked a day to prepare dinner!! Im keeping my fingers crossed. -
